Monday I went for the first appointment with my new Urologist, my old
one left to open his own practice in NY (hated to lose him, he was very
good).
I like the new Urologist just as well , he is very nice, knowledgeable
and has a real sharp resident who works with him. When I went in I
told him I needed a urine test to see if the the UTI had subsided since
most of my Cipro was now gone. (UTI had been diagnosed by my Internist)
Since I had not had a recent KUB (kidney, urinary tract and bladder) x
ray, one was done and compared to the CT scan done on 9/13. They both
show up a stone blocking the uretur on my right kidney, possibly the
left one also and plenty of kidney stones in both kidneys. Neither of
these conditions are good for my kidneys and can lead to bad complications.
SO, I am off to same day surgery on Tuesday. They will insert a
laser through my urethra and with computer guidance take it to the
uretur first and break the stone there and then to each kidney to break
up all the stones. This will reduce to the size of stones to a grain
of sand to be excreted in the urine. They will also put in a stent to
keep the ureter open until it heals and then remove the stent in about
ten days. I thought that my difficulty urinating was all related to the
UTI and discovered it was not.
My new Urologist and his resident impressed me with their quick
analysis of the problems and a willingness to coordinate with my Cancer
Doc and get me in quickly. I am sure he will be able to handle whatever
may come up with my BPH (enlarged prostrate) in the future.
If all l goes well I will go back for the postponed Chemo on October
4th.

Wow Don. My mother had kidney stones for nearly 25
years and they were finally found to be from a
para-thyroid gland which was the size of a peanut
instead of a pea. By then she was peeing pure crystals
of calcium. She had three open kidney operations to
remove stones - two on the right and one on the left.
She looks like she was sawed in half by a really bad
magician. She had countless 'sis-ti-scopes' [got no
idea how that is spelled] to grab stones and pulled
them out. Her last big stone was done with the then
experimental laser which they put in through her
abdomen - one for the laser and one to watch what he
was doing. Remarkable.
Removal of that tumor finally stopped her kidney stones.
Hope they can diagnose the origin of their chemical
makeup. Might lead to figuring out where they came from.
Good luck with that. We want you back on that Chemo. No
one in this group is allowed to go over the 3 disease
limit you know.
Keep us posted if you can. Prayers being said.

Duckei,
The major chemical makeup of my stones are oxalates. I have had diets
to follow and no salt added to any of my food. Despite all of this they
continue to recur. They ar still trying to stop them. A new Urologist
brings new ideas so we will see what new weapons he brings to the table
to stop the recurrence of stones.

Hi Nann,
I have passed stones and you are so right they are no fun. Have had 4
lipotripses and they all went well. This is my first experience with a
laser. Anxious to compare it with the lipotripses.

Boy, you sure do have a lot on your plate.
I hope that the surgery goes ok. It is wonderful how your doctor's are
working so well together. I didn't think that that was even possible!!
Please let us know how you make out,
Charlene
