about busy days and synovectomies

Hey guys!

haven't been around all that much lately due to life getting disgustingly
busy.  It's all been slowing down and I think I am finally catching up on my
rest again.  The final installments in this wave of busy-ness was dinner for
11 Tuesday night (second one of these in a week, one for each governing body
of our 2 churches) and my RD appointment Wednesday.

sigh, my RD didn't really like the continued swelling in my thumbs.  We got
Xrays of both hands and the joint spaces still looked tolerable, not great
but not bad either.  So he's thinking I might really benefit from
synovectomies on the thumbs.  I have an appointment with the hand surgeon to
discuss this in a month (90 miles away - ugh).  But I'm curious just how much
recovery I'd be most likely looking at if we do this.  I'm figuring since
they'll just be "cleaning stuff out" as my RD said, it won't be too bad - as
in a few days of laying low, then gently beginnning to use thumbs again.  Any
input just to give me an idea until we/I see the surgeon?

Good luck Nan!  I don't have any advice perhaps KJ can help you I
think she had them done.  Need to put arthur to bed, arthur time to
visit mr sleeping bag!   How is the Enbrel or Hurmira (?) working for
you?   -- MZ

It's Enbrel for me and it does help, but isn't a miracle drug.  I think it's
that old PA vs. RA bug-a-boo again.  stubborn PA just doesn't seem to have
miracle drugs as often.  But the Enbrel has definitely improved my energy
levels and reduced my morning stiffness, etc.  I get more done and feel
better overall, just not as much as I dreamed of!  (heck, I had dreams of
being able to get through the day without a nap but I can't, so I guess I'm
still in my second childhood!)  My RD's contemplating reducing the mtx to see
what happens.  Having never had this degree of control of either the PA or
the Ps before on one DMARD alone, I'm not sure it'll work.  We'll see.   I'd
even be wiling to give arthur my *good* sleeping bag!

I'll drop KJ a note as she's probably not watching ASA too closely these
days.  I was thinking some folks had had synovectomies on their hands, but it
might be some of the folks who are currently otherwise occupied.  If it gives
me back real use of my thumbs again, it'll be worth it!  Even Mike's noticed
the "ouch"es are slipping out more often and he's accustomed to hearing them.

it doesn't sound too bad, nann, but then, i've never had it done. i had
a major tenosynovectomy on my wrist and was amazed to be typing within
a few days. i hope yours would be that easy.

glad to hear from you!

it's mostly that my thumbs have only been reasonably good for a few scattered
months out of the last 5.5 years.  I could work around it more with any other
finger, but the opposable thumbs really were a step forward in evolution and
even all my work-arounds aren't enough now.  Naturally, everything I love
doing uses the hands a lot.  Even holding on to books to read them is a
hassle.  sigh.............

Oh and one of our vestries (governing body of the local parish in the
Episcopal church) discovered this week that our bathroom needs major work.
Next meeting where they can approve the expenditure is 10/19 so sometime
after that our upstairs bathroom will most likely be torn up.  Until then, we
have a (small) hole through the floor looking into the basement, serving as a
warning not to step in that area as we don't know how much more of the
subflooring is rotten.  Too much drama.  (Been leaving the basement bathroom
to Mike as he likes to shower there anyway.  I need to see if it's tolerably
clean before they tear up the upstairs one - especially if my thumbs are in
recovery when this happens.  Maybe I'll just fly down to visit my mom while
they do the work!)

i must've caught you on a goodthumb weekend during that gimp picnic.
datburned evolution, got us used to certain physical innovations and
conveniences and then, lets us down by also making those changes vulnerable
to disease and damage.  sigh . . . the life of a prototype can be so
hard.<g>   visiting your mom sounds like a good option during the
construction stuff.    momhugs might be good things to have available during
your recovery too, just cuz they always are.

I was probably still a bit up from all the pred that got me through the move
to Michigan.  Also, I had my DH along to help out and he is very well trained
;)  I'm amazed at what I CAN do without my thumbs, or with very little, but
one just does tend to need both hands more often without thumbs.

Heh, for some totally unexpected reason, I slept 10.5 hours last night.  Woke
at 10:12 this morn, with a 10:15 mammogram appointment.  No alarm set because
I NEVER sleep THAT late!  Luckily I was going to the mobile unit that comes
out here, a couple of blocks from our house.  But I had to throw on clothes
and run over there and do all the paperwork and the testing without coffee or
mornig meds or time to slowly wake up my thumbs.  It was NOT fun!

You think he will want you to do both thumbs at the
same time??!!!!!
May I suggest a tool to help wipe your arse and I have
a box of stuff that I had mailed to Gwen [that right]
when she had her thumb done. Just say the word and I
will redirect it to you. Of course, I am assuming that
box is still in the hall closet and not in one of the
pods. errrrgghhh

Mike asked that too.  I have no idea.  I must admit I don't want to have to
drive over to Petoskey TOO many times for surgery, even though Mike will be
doing the driving.  He does see patients in Cheboygan also, which is closer,
but I don't know if he operates there.  Their hospital is *really* small too
and I don't know how far I trust them.  Then again, Petoskey's hospital's
nurses now hold the record for the longest organized strike in the labor
movement....

At least our congregations should be understanding about him needing to take
me over there - they've become quite accustomed to seeing me in my thumb
braces.

You need thumbs for that?????  I've barely used my thumbs in that capacity
for some time now.  The real trick is keeping your thumb braces clean.  (I
can do that, but sometimes it's easier just to take the brace off.)  Hmmm,
may need gloves to wear though to make sure the incision stays clean!

Just realized, Mike will *definitely* have to do the dishes for a while if I
get this done, heehee.  (he always talks about how he loves to wash dishes,
but doesn't actually do them more than about 35-40% of the time)

I am not sure about your doctor but I was figuring you
would be in some sort of cast situation. If that is the
case you will definitely need something to help. At
least for a week. Of course you are now off the Arava....
I went looking and the magic box of goodies must be in
storage. It is not where it used to be which was the
hall closet. oh well.

oh yes, off Arava is a wonderful thing.  Less frequent trips and much less
urgency.  Don't miss the stuff at all!

If it is a cast situation, I think I'll vote for doing one at a time.  I
might be able to do all the follow up stuff at their closer office and save
on gas costs some.  It was painful last week to drive 60 miles RT to the RD,
using almost 3 gallons of gas, and not figuring out any other errands to
combine with the trip!  Argh.
