I would like to know what kind of shoes people with the RA in your feet have
had luck with.  I am still searching since May and can't seem to find
anything that works.  I need a good arch and a cushioned shoe, which for
some reason don't seem to go together. Just got done with the new balance
574 walking shoe, it was recommend but not enough arch support and way to
heavy. I was in an orthodic but they were to hard, made out of graphite and
hard plastic.
Anyway if anyone has any suggestions I would love it.
Thanks

I am not sure if you want an oxford type, but check out the PW Minor
shoes. They were recommended to me because of the extra depth, but
they make a regular depth as well.

They are a very supportive shoe. I have the shoe pictured at the top
of the Canfield women's page and the sandals called Cancun. Several
years ago I bought the oxford type and they were very good.

Drew shoes are good as well. Try this:
http://www.drewshoes.com/ShoeFinder.aspx

You click on your foot problems and it recommends a shoe.

I live either in Birkenstocks or SAS.  People seem to either love or hate
Birks.  I know a lot of nurses and teachers wear SAS.

I have to agree with Jo -- Birkenstocks.  They're the only shoe I can wear
without pain.

Good luck!!

I'm a SAS fan and have had some luck with Merills (not sure of the
spelling). Kate

Beck - I'm going to repost part of a note I wrote to another topic
(under prednisone) I recently found a great shoe store that may be able
to help you.  The name of the shoe store is Foot Solutions. It is some
kind of franchise. They can fit you for Over The Counter orthotics
which go for around 60 bucks or make you a computerized individualized
set for about $250. I went with the OTC!  LOL  They have many different
brands of high end sneakers as well as many other kinds of special
shoes to address all kinds of foot issues. I bought a pair called
Brooks. They are a cross trainer I
think.  My feet hurt so bad before this new combo that I could barely
walk.

The manager/owner of the store worked with me one on one for about 2
hours
till we found the best combo of orthotic and shoe for me.  I hope you
can find a store like this near you. It's been a Godsend. You can go to

their website at http://www.footsolutions.com/ and do a location
search. (I have no financial interest -- only comfort!) I've worn
custom orthotics since I was 16 and  these OTC ones I have are really
the most comfortable and only $60! They recommended an orthotic made
with a material called Plastazote because they mold to your feet to
provide customized comfort. It also had a great arch and heel cup. I
stood on a mat connected to a computer to get a reading of my foot that
helped the owner detemine which style was best for me. I needed
something that is spongy and conforms to my foot as well as providing
the support that my natural stuctures have lost.  I had been miserable
for the past year going from one shoe to another and never finding
anything to ease the pain. I was getting to the point where the only
time my feet didn't hurt was in my esprit foam beach shoes and I wasn't
about to wear them 24/7 as they offered no ankle support. But at least
my feet didn't hurt!  LOL  Now I have a good shoe and orthotic that
didn't cost an arm and a leg.....just a few feet!  LOL  Feel free to
email me. I hope you have a store near you.  DianeW

I have been wearing the soft footbed Arizona
Birkenstock. Can you wear Birks and can you wear a sandle?
People with no arch have trouble with Birks but I have
a very high arch and I am very comfortable.
I also have a pair of tie closed toe Birks but only
wear them when there is snow on the ground. I do have
one pair of sneakers which is wide enough but after an
hour my toes start screaming at me to be free. Aesics
[sp]???  They are up stairs and I'm not so won't go
look at them at the moment but they are the best I have
found for room for the toes and the width of my foot
and the bed is removable if you have your own orthodics.

actually, i have flat feet and love my birks.  i just can't wear them very
long, because i can't put a lift in them and then, my back starts yelling at
me for that.  so, i have to make a choice at that point, comfortable feet
vs. comfortable back---yeah, the back always wins that argument.

I wear 2 types of shoes, 95% of the time - Birkenstocks and New Balance SL-2
last athletic shoes.  That SL-2 last part in the New Balance shoes is
important for me.  The SL-2 last is specially cut for high arches with more
arch support and a higher shoetop, so there's more rom for the top of the
arch in addition to the mega arch support.  Even then I have to try on the
shoes to make sure the support hits me right. Even some of the SL-2s don't
support my arch enough.  But the New Balance that work for me are just
heavenly.  Right now I'm switching between an old pair and a new one and boy
can I tell the difference.  Still not ready to wear the new ones on mucky
trails though.

Oh, and in Birkenstocks, I can only wear the traditional line, the others
don't have enough support.

Nann - I used to love New Balance and then something changed. Maybe I
was wearing SL-2 and didn't know it. Where does it say that or how do I
know its them?  Thanks DianeW

Inside the shoe, on the rear portion of the insole.  It says New Balance and
has their little enblem then says SL-2 fit under th zooming B.  If you go to
a store that specializes in athletic shoes, they may know which models are
SL-2 without you having to look at every shoe.  I've bought most of mine at
the NB outlet in Boston and they had the info on their signs which made
shopping much easier for me  :)

You can also look on the website and get a list of the style numbers that are
SL-2.

Thanks for all the responses. I am off again to find some new shoes. I have
been doing this since May and I am truly at  BREAKING
POINT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't exercise, hardly make it to work, I am
taking the enbrel and it has been great now, so now I have the energy but
the stupid thing with the feet hurting and shoe issues is about ready to
make me do something that I will regret!! or my family will, anyway thanks
the Foot doc won't answer my calls, she says she can't do anything more and
don't wear them, big help.  I have been wearing the newbalance 574 white
walking shoe, which I was now told that it is no good, who knows. If I put
my orthodic in them it is hard and so is the shoe so it kills my feet, since
I only slightly pronate they said not to put it in a shoe that is corrected,
If I wear a shoe with out a orthoidc, there is a lot of pressure at the base
of my big toes and the arches kill me with the hard arch support.
Who k nows, I swear I get one problem fixed and then another, I actually
would like to not have the energy since I can't do anything. Oh well story
of my life.
My husband and I will be celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary this
Tuesday and I think the best gift I could give him is to be out of here!!! I
am sure he is so sick of hearing me complain, which I try not to do but it
is so terribly frustrating. I don't know who to believe and I have spent so
much money on shoes it is disgusting, I could open my own shoe store.
Since the 1 and 5th metatarsal heads are gone or almost destroyed from the
RA I would assume I need a good supportive shoe, but whether that means an
orthodic I don't know. I guess I can always hunt down another doctor but
everyone seems to give you a different opinion, wear what feels good, well
dammn, sorry, nothing feels good. if it doesn't bother my feet it shots up
to me hips!!
Sorry to be so long and down I just really feel that with all this going on
since May I am ready to totally give up on life in general.  I should be
thankful and I am trying but it is so hard to even want to do anything when
there is nothing I can wear.
Thanks for listening, it helps,
Becky

I was using an orthotic with a soft cover; until it needed recovering.
The only people I could find to recover it used a hard material. It hurt
until I used a cushioned insole over it. As long as the shoe is roomy
enough it should work.
