That's what I said yesterday when I dislocated my right replaced hip again.
I had my hand vacuum, was going to vacuum the corner of the room where I saw
a dead roach, but didn't get to it after all.  I heard and felt the hip pop
out again. I was by my computer (have a new one) and the nearest phone was
across the room on the piano.  I used the computer desk and a cabinet to
push over with my hand until I had to just fall over on the floor on my left
hip and slide myself over where I could reach the phone.  Oh boy, did it
hurt!

I called 911 and told them all the doors were locked, and then called my son
at work.  The amnbulance and fire truck got here before he did.  The fire
truck medic took out a window in the patio and then used something to unlock
the door into the house.  They had just gotten me on the backboard when
Billy got here.  He took my dog to his house and went by school and picked
up Jayne while I was taken to the hospital.  The doctor on duty in ER called
my doc and he told her to put the hip back in.  That was after she saw the
x-rays and told him it was dislocated (as if I didn't know).  The xrays were
okay until she held my left leg up straight to take another xray of the
right hip.  That was really painful.

After the hip was back in place and a brace put on my leg from ankle to hip
so the knee won't bend, Jayne brought  me home and stayed last night and is
here today.  God sure blessed me to put me just around the corner from their
house.  I have an appointment with Dr. Hartzog for Monday morning.  I've
called his nurse (on voice mail) to find out if the abduction brace I wore
last time would be better than the brace I have on now.  I hope so, because
in that one I can bend my knee and it sure makes getting up and down easier,
especially in my little bathroom.  I've decided I just have to live in a
dirty house since I can't afford anyone to clean house just now.  When
you're praying for dumb people, please include me on that list.

Oh Gwen, so very sorry to hear abut your dislocation as I remember you
telling me (Jan) about that abduction brace when you dislocated before. I
really feel for you, and hope you'll soon be free of pain.
I've just recently moved house, and I have had many silent thankful prayers
to the surgeon who sorted out my 10 dislocations by re-doing the hip in
January. If he'd seen some of the lifting and carrying I've had to do, he'd
probably be horrified lol.
My prayers and thoughts go across the Pond to you

I got a call back from Dr.'s nurse and she said to put on the abduction
brace.  Jayne ran home for a while so when she gets back to get it down from
a shelf, I'll do that.  Will be much easier than this one that won't let me
bend my knee!

Just a thought Gwen.  Please ask your doctor to check and see if your
insurance will cover home assistance while you recuperate.  Some will,
including someone to cook meals and clean house.

A good thought, Walt.  But I'm doubtful that Medicare would cover it and as
far as I know, my suplement through AARP wouldn't either.  I will ask Dr.
Hartzog about it Monday though.
Thanks

See.  God answered part of our prayers already.  Bad enough to have a hip
out of commission without losing the knee too.  And only a fellow gimp would
understand how important that is.

Hope for a good fix with minimal pain ASAP

Ouch Gwen, I shuddered when I read this.  The pain must have been
terrible.
Please look into home care which is available in most states, either
free or for a very small amount of money.  My aunt had it for several
years and it was a god send for her (and for me who was working at the
time).
Heal quickly and forget about your house for now.

Gwen,

Geez it's a wonder you were able to scoot over to the phone.  I
dislocated my replaced hip joint and know the pain, I believe to this
day it is the worst pain I have ever felt.  I was lucky,  I had driven
to Cleveland Clinic for appointments in my regular shoes and was in the
process of putting on my leg braces when I slipped too far into the
corner of the car seat and then it popped.  A call to hospital security
on my cell phone got them up to the parking garage with a stretcher
and a trip to the ER.

I hope your recovery goes well and you get the right type of brace.  If
people don't like your dirty house they can pitch in and clean it for you.

So sorry to hear that, Gwen. Sending BIG HUGS and prayers that you will

Just wondering....are you considered disabled? If so, doesn't the state
have people who will come in and help with cleaning and such until you
are better?

Gwen,
I thought you had passed the "no dislocate" for that hip!  I can just recall
my right hip dislocation and the experience with the brace, so I, too can
relate, had the fire/paramedics - ambulance ride from home.  I still keep my
cell phone nearby as my phones would be impossible to reach from the floor.
Do take care - Gentle hugs and healing wishes from me and all your ASA
friends.  Joan

Joan, my DIL changed her cell phone service recently and she added a phone
for me onto it.  I had it in my purse and never even thought to turn it on.
My son reminded me that I should keep it turned on and in a pocket so I
wouldn't have that problem again.  He said it could be recharged!!  But I'm
just not used to having it yet.  However, it is now in my pocket and turned
on.

I am soooo sorry Gwen. I can empathise with your predicament and
having to figure out the "travel" arrangements to get to the phone and
all the things that need to be done. Dislocating your hip must have
been so painful, and it mus have been scary processing what you needed
to do to get help.

Thank goodness you can wear the more comfortable brace.

Here's wishing you a speedy recovery!

ooooh, Gwen - how awful! So glad you have family nearby.

Check out whether you can get some home care assistance for chores and such
while recuperating.

And when our lives are over and we are accounting for ourselves, will the
cleanliness of our homes even be a factor?

{{{{{Gwen}}}}}  Your not stupid. My MIL had her's come
out 3 times and only thing she did that was stupid was
forget to take the portable phone into the bathroom
with her on her last accident. The one we bought her
after the 2nd time it came out.
My dance friend had hip surgery recently and his
surgeon has developed a way to install the hip without
destroying the socket. He had NO restrictions. He can
and could right after the surgery bend fully from the
waist. The surgeon told him, he could do anything he
wanted to that didn't hurt. Sure glad they are making
progress in that vein.
Heal well.

Duckie is right, Gwen.  How can you think of yourself as stupid? You are not
responsible for your body's problems.  I'm just glad you were able to get to
a phone.  Have you looked into that first alert company, the one where you
wear a locket that you can press when you fall and it becomes a walkie
talkie with 911?  Sounds like it might be a good investment for you.

Sending healing thoughts,

i don't know if you received my email or not, gwen.  and of course, i'm not
expecting a reply to it, because i think i'd be wimpering in a corner
someplace, for a long while, after having to experience this once again.
but if you did receive it, you know i'm thinking about you.  and if you
didn't receive it, i'll restate something i wrote that i believe would be of
benefit to you.

C.O.P.E.  is an organization that helps people (on social security income,
disabled or elderly or chronically ill) maintain their independent living
arrangements, by providing services such as housekeeping, errand running,
personal hygene assistance or whatever the need might be and for however
long/often they determine you need them.  i hope you will look into it and
hope there is a local chapter or branch in your area  of which you can avail
yourself.

my 83 year old parents, here in the state of washington, are helped by that
organization and i am so grateful it exists.  my folks are both on social
security and dad has a small pension.   there's no way they could afford to
hire somebody to assist them.  we 3 sisters do what we can for them, but
none of us are in higher income brackets either.  so, COPE has been a
godsend.

hugs and hopes and prayers that all goes well for you.

geesh!  my brain has been misfiring all over the place lately.   it is
COPES, MPC---in-home care services---aging and disability services.  it can
be applied for through DSHS, under medicaid services.  my brain put it into
an entirely different catagory, probably because i've been watching the news
too much for the katrina dissater relief progress.  sorry, i'm so totally
spacey, you guys.  i feel like a total ditz.

the url i had is for my area (seattle, king county).  had to google for it
again--

ty.org/respite/description.html+COPES%2C+MPC

but there are tollfree numbers given on this website that might help you
conact your local branch of DSHS for COPES, MPC if you ask them how you can
contact them for your area.

i orginally got my first clue about them from a "where to turn to"
information and referral guide i picked up at one of our local senior
centers.  it was listed under 'in-home care services, personal care, chores,
etc."

hope that helps.

Believe it or not I feel the same way....  I am just sick.  I expect too
much from from the common man,  I Guess.  You will probably not see it one
the national news but the FEMA cards and Red Cross cards are showing up at
the strip clubs and the like that are 10 to 20 miles from the centers where
these people are.
It makes it so hard to ask people to continue to dig deep to help
others.
What are we going to do with RITA pointed to Galveston?????  I have to
step back from this for a day or so and make sure I have a plan to get out
if I need to or dig deeper if I need to.   I have over$5000 worth of
medicine in my frig.   Should I buy that generator to keep the deep freezer
and frig cold///???    I think the answer to that is yes.  We shall see.

just found my puget sound directory for seniors.  these tollfree numbers are
for the state of washington, so i called and asked about other states.  i
was told other states have similar programs, but those states might call
them something else.  still the programs should be found within the
Medicaid, DSHS and HCS departments for that state.  i'm including these
phone numbers for anybody in this state who needs these kinds of services.
in this directory, it states:

Community Options Program Entry System (COPES)-- 1-800-442-5129

"for adults who would therwise required Medicaid services in a nursing
facility, COPES offers in home personal care, assistance with essential
household tasks, case management and care in Adult Family Homes, Assisted
Living, and Adult Residential Care (ARC) facilities.  Adult Day Health and
Home Health care may be included in the COPES service plan.  persons
eligible for COPES are aged, blind or disabled and meet medical and Medicaid
income and resource requirements."

Medicaid Personal Care Services (MPC) -- 1-800-422-3263

"eligible persons may receive help with tasks such as bathing, dressing,
grooming, shopping, housekeeping, and transportation through personal care
services.  these services are provided to clients living in their own homes,
Adult Family Homes or Enhanced Adult Residential Care (EARC) facilities."

there is also something called Chore Services  that provides personal care,
and related houshold tasks, such as laundry, meal preparation, escorted
transportation and shopping for people living in their own homes.  this is
also available through DSHS (Dept. of Social & Health Services) -- HCS (home
& community services)

hope it helps,
