The predictions are absolutely chilling the hazards of flooding were
well known and predicted.  Sorry I have a passion for wetlands and
rivers (can you tell???)LOL!

DROWNING NEW ORLEANS

By Mark Fischetti

A major hurricane could swamp New Orleans under 20 feet of water,
killing thousands. Human activities along the Mississippi River have
dramatically increased the risk, and now only massive reengineering of
southeastern Louisiana can save the city

yeah, I posted that link earlier, but it was buried in with some other
comments. Excellent article.  It's obvious from their website that there's
been a lot of interest in the article!  Louisiana should NEVER have allowed
the wetlands to be developed as they did.  My kin in the area have long
complained about the state's unwillingness to acquire any public lands or
guide development wisely.
On Meet the Press the first Sunday after Katrina they stated that the $14
billion dollar cost of restoring the wetlands is equivalent to what is being
spent in Iraq by the US every 2 weeks.

and the billions that will be required for all the reconstruction is a lot
of money, but the nice part about it is that it will be a one time
expenditure, as opposed to being allocated for in the federal budget
forever.  (i'm not saying that some ongoing budget allocations are not
worthy or justified expeditures)  however, i agree with your kin that much
more care and consideration needs to be responsibly given to developing in
marginal or problematical areas.  and unfortunately, that often means that
viable farmland will continue to be lost to progress.
