I broke the bone in my left foot. No idea how or when. I have Peripheral
Neuropathy in both feet. I'm in a knee to toe cast for another month.
My question is: can it be from Prednisone (on it for 6 yrs--down to 6 MG
from 20 last fall) or Premarin or Atenolol. The Foot and Ankle Institute Dr
says that he has a number of patients that do not know how they break their
foot bones. He says that you wear down the padding on the bottom of your
feet and then start walking on the bone until it snaps. He said to get Dr
Scholl's to walk in after I get the cast off for more padding. By the way, I
broke the middle one, same foot last year, this is one closer to the outer
edge of the foot. Last year's break, I hit it on the edge of the tub so I
know how I did it. My bone density test is 'normal'.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Butterfly - I have broken the outside bone on my right foot twice.
The fifth metatarsol. The first time it was called a Jone's Fracture
because of the location. I was barefoot walking across the family room
when it happened. They told me the same thing as they have told you.
Too much walking on feet with poor structure or breakdown of the
structure due to Rheumatoid Arthritis - no padding. had been on my feet
a lot that weekend as it was my son's birthday and we had a big party
for him. I broke it the day after the party. That was also the summer I
wore Birkenstocks all summer. The foot doctor told me that they were
not a good match for me and probably contributed to the Jone's
fracture. Something about the way the position of the heal caused the
tendons to pull on the 5th metatasal. That was the end of birks for
me. Two eyars later I had another birthday party for my son -- and
another break just a bit furhter down on the same bone. No more
birthday parties for my son.....LOL I have also had 6 rib fractures
and 4 compression fractures in my spine all with a "normal" bone
density test. Only the last test showed osteopenia. Cause -- from the
years of Pred I've been on and lack of estrogen.
My feet hurt all the time although I have found a new OTC orthotic that
has helped immensely. It's made by a company called Lynco (no
financial interest) and was matched to my foot by a computer in the
speciality shoe store. It has a good arch in it as well as being made
out of a material that conforms to your foot and provides the fat type
padding that my foot is missing. I still have some pain but nothing
like before
Hope this helps! By the way .. are you the same Butterfly that used to
be on the Prodigy newsgroup for Lupus way back when???

Thnaks for the info. I'll have to ask my Dr about it when I go for the next
appt. Sounds like I will be wearing shoes inside from now on : (
Am going off HRT after being on it for 9 years. That should be interesting.
Haven't been on any Prodigy group and only been on NG's since late '98.
Thanks again

Janice - the name of the shoe store is Foot Solutions. It is some kind
of franchise. They can fit you for OTC orthotics which go for around 60
bucks or make you a computerized individualized set for about $250. I
went with the OTC! LOL THey have many different brands of high end
sneakers. I bought a pair called Brooks. They are a cross trainer I
think. My feet hurt so bad before this new combo that I could barely
walk. Forget groceries - couldn't make it thru the store! The
manager/owner of the store worked with me one on one for about 2 hours
till we found the best combo of orthotic and shoe for me. I hope you
can find a store like this near you. It's been a Godsend. You can go to
their website at http://www.footsolutions.com/ and do a location
search. I highly recommend you try this before your pod makes you
custom orthotics unless your insurance is paying for them. They are
usually around $400! I've worn custom orthotics since I was 16 and
these OTC ones I have are really the most comfortable and only $60! So
even if the pod wants to fit you with customs and you decide to go
along with it.....make sure you know what kind of material it is going
to be made out of and how hard it is going to be because you need
something that is spongy and conforms to your foot as well as providing
the support that your natural stuctures have lost. Don't know if he
will be able to do that but that's what you need. Let me know if I can
help in any other way. Feel free to email me. DianeW

thanks Diane
I went to pod today and he did make arrangements for me to be fitted for
orthos. I told him I needed something soft and he said they would be a
sponge type material. I will see what the guy says who does the fittings. if
I am not satisfied we have a Foot Solutions in my town that I will try.
I do have Medicare and hopefully it will pay. I also have diabetes so he
feels sure Medicare will take care of them
thanks for your help

I'm glad he was helpful to you. Take the name of that material I
emailed you to the fitting. Maybe that guy can tell you if he can get
it. IT's sooooo comfy! How long will it take to get the orthotics?
Check out the store while you are waiting. You still need shoes to fit
them into! DianeW
