Just curious if anyone else has had a major increase in pain after starting
Plaquenil. I've been on it for two weeks now and I hurt SO much worse than
I did, and in different places than I ever have. My wrists and ankles are
now screaming at me, along with everything else. The Lodine doesn't seem to
be helping much any more, either.
BIG sigh.

Jean, I have been on Plaquenil for a couple of years and don't think it caused
more pain. However, I am flaring so badly now I could blame anything. I have a
fairly high pain threshold, I think, but I could whine a LOT right now. I am
wondering if my Methotrexate is losing its effect. But I have not noticed
anything with the Plaquenil.

Jean
it takes about 6 to 8 weeks to see if plaquenil works for you. I never
heard of it making the pain worse.
Maybe you need to contact your doctor to give you something for the Pain
NOW and keep on the plaquenil too. Like a medrol dose pack, that is
cortisone. I should ward off the pain for now then let the plaquenil kick
in.
Ask your doctor about this and see what he or she has to say about it.
I wish you luck
hang in there

Yes indeed,
I have and do. Feeling the increase in pain tells me the Plaquenil isn't
working on my UCTD and I wonder how high the inflammation is going.
My next RD appt. is Oct. 10 so it'll be a very very very long month.
:-( I'm going thru whut you are, tho' I've been on the Plaquenil for 51/2
weeks now.
This sux.

Hmmmm - No, I didn't have an increase in pain at all. Of course, I didn't
have a decrease in pain either for many weeks. Then I slowly realized that
I did feel a little better. Hope this happens for you.

Like DeeTee, I didn't get anything from Plaquenil one way or another.
Could it be that your problem is progressing? Plaquenil, like most
DMARDS that I know about, takes at least 2 months to judge whether or
not it is working.
My first RD took me off of methotrexate too early, and now here I am
two YEARS later, back on methotrexate (along with Enbrel, azulfidine,
prednisone, and on and on),
My first RD took me off of it too soon, and never went up to the full
dosage that he could have. As a result, I believe I went through a very
long period of never ending pain and frustration.
Take your time, and give the Plaquenil a chance to work.
I hope that it does work for you,
Charlene

I'm hoping it works too, Charlene and will definitely give it a chance. But
in the meantime, I need some different pain management. I'm on 1,000 mg. of
Lodine a day but it's not doing the job anymore. I was given Darvocet to
take before bed but it causes horrible nightmares so I gave that up.
I have an appt. with the RD on Mon. so we'll see what he wants to do next.
Thanks to all who responded -- your answers helped.
