For those of you who have hand, wrist, and finger problems, can you tell
me if your problems seemed to come on gradually or very quickly?

I have developed, seemingly almost overnight, terrible problems with the
base of both of my thumbs, the knuckles where the fingers meet the hand
of both of my index fingers, as well as some triggering of one of the
index fingers.   My pcp is having me get some hand x-rays and will send
copies to my RD, but wow, I just can't believe how suddenly these
problems have popped up!!!   Is this how it has happened for the rest of
you?   Am sure hoping this will all settle down as I really don't want
to be facing any more surgeries for a bit.   Just got completely healed
up from the partial synovectomy and the CT release I had a few months
ago.   Ortho doc said I will need surgery on the elbow probably within
the next year.   Hopefully no finger or thumb surgeres on top of all of
that!!!

After all these years, it still amazes me how you can feel fine one day
and wake up and be having major problems just like that!   Sheesh this
disease takes all the fun out of things!!!  ;  )

Yes Donna, not only overnight but while doing something.  I'll never
forget one time while I was playing the piano for a preachers'
conference, my hand went totally out.  That's why I always always
practice.  I must know how far I can push it if I must.

Take care,

With my OA, I've got a couple mid-finger knuckles that ache and sometmes
hurt like crazy for no reason.  I sometimes wake up with them hurting but,
in my case, its from overdoing it at work, from the keyboard or adding
machine.  IIRC, the base of fingers is usually RA territory and I recommend
lots of opening chocolate wrappers as, ahem, physio.

Seriously though, I hope you get some relief soon

Hi Donna G,,,,  It just goes to show you that the disease marches on and if
a person has inflam.arth. they can not tell what their problems will be
tomorrow. We train ourselves to pay attention to what hurts and some things
will not hurt until it is almost too late for the joint.
I am sooo sorry that your problems are on going but the only way to get
away from them is to worry about someone else's which you already know and
do so well.

Hi Donna G,
I have erosions in both wrists, and problems with the base of my thumbs
as well.
The wrists came on very gradually, as did the loss of strength and
gripping power.
When my thumbs started up, I could barely grasp or hold on to anything,
and it came on pretty fast.  The bases of both thumbs blew up like
balloons, I had no range of movement with the thumb at all. The right
one calmed down on it's own, but I had to get a cortisone shot in the
base of the left thumb. I was surprised,  because it didn't really hurt
at all, and it calmed the problem down completely, as it has been about
3 months since I had it done.
That was how it was for me.
I hope that you won't need surgery or anything, sounds like you have
your hands full (so to speak) with surgeries lately. I hope that you
can find some relief soon,
Char

Donna, my thumb basal joint & finger problems developed greadually.  When I
had the left thumb done, the Dr.said I also needed to have the right one
done.  However, I'm still using it as is and will as long as I possibly can.
I don't think I've ever had much hurt worse than when they pulled the pin
out of my thumb, and I don't look forward to doing it again.

(((((((((Donna))))))))))

when my thumbs kicked in, it was overnight, but one at a time.  literally, we
were setting up the art show canopy for a show Mike was doing when I kept
getting stabs of pain in one thumb.  Finally looked down and the joint you
talk about was quite swollen on that thumb.  Hasn't been completely back down
to normal size at any time since (5.5 years) though it's come close a couple
of times.  The other thumb blew up about 6 weeks later.

Are they still trying you on a different combo of DMARDs or have you returned
to what you were on previously?  sorry, my brain's full of holes today.

Hey, Donna, haven't you learned that nothing is normal when it comes
to Arthur?  My husband used to tell me he really didn't like the new
medicine that would take care of the major pain because then he could
feel all the little pains it was hiding! LOL

Actually, I have had both hands done for carpal syndrome and it came
on rather quickly from spraining my wrists, but my trigger thumbs came
on very slowly and sneakily.

My hands took longer but I lost my jaw [both condyles]
in less than 3 months. I woke up one morning not being
able to bite a cuticle and then within weeks, not being
able to shut my jaw. Whole bottom jaw slipped
backwards. I know it was 3 months cause I have my teeth
cleaned every 3 months due to one medication I take and
they were fine at one cleaning and gone at the next.
Hope those hands calm down soon. I have been wearing a
brace on my right hand cause of the lower thumb joint
annoying the wrist joint which in turn is annoying me. lol
