the truth about my ankle

boy, a lot of ankle threads here lately!

ok, so i finally went to the podiatrist my new rheumy recommended. he
took an xray of my left foot and ankle and made a lot of sounds of awe
and disbelief as he studied them. not really a surprise to me. i knew
it was a mess. many of the joints are completely fused; others are
working hard on getting there. and the problem is, they've all fused in
a bad position, which is why i walk on the outside of my foot. surgery
would require realigning everything in a better position and fusing it
in that position. we are not going there at this time. instead, he gave
me a cortisone shot (OW) and wanted to give me another, but i wussed
out (mad at myself now, cause i can feel that that first one is making
a difference already) and is sending me to the brace lady. i've been
avoiding a brace. probably should have gotten one long ago. actually, i
probably should have had the surgery long ago to avoid the mess i'm in
now. so, i guess i will soon be wearing a brace and a funny shoe. sigh.
at least i'm alive and happy. that's my mantra.

thanks for listening,

diane

Hey now, none of that funny shoe business.  Think of it as starting a
new fashion trend.  Then you can be alive, happy, and pre-hip (and not
as in replacement) fashion-wise.

Smokie Darling (Annie) - hoping all goes well with the brace lady.
Tell her you want stiletto heels, that's sure to get a smile.  ;)

Yikes!!  Ankles are so "in" these days.  <g>

Actually, I'd love to hear about your ankle lady and what kind of brace
she comes up with for you.  I'm struggling with brace types because I
know I need one.  Or, make that two.  Both my ankles suck.  Right now,
it's my right one that's accutely injured.

When you get a brace, I'd love to find out how much comfort it gives
you; how comfortable it is; what it looks like;  are you happy?  All
that good stuff.  Take some photos of your funny shoes, please.  <g>

I have a brace for my left ankle, which I'm not really thrilled with.
It's a MalleoLoc.  It does provide some support, not as much as an air
cast, has a smaller profile, but hurts my foot.

However, I need a new one for my right ankle.  If I find a comfortable
one, I'd buy a second matching one for my other ankle.  All advice is
accepted, because these things can become quite expensive, and insurance
won't reimburse me for shopping around for the most comfortable one.

When I see my orthopod on tuesday, I'm going to ask him to write a
script for a round of PT, to evaluate my options and before I think of
undergoing any kind of reconstruction.  Of course, that also depends on
what they find on yesterday's MRI.  I'm also going to ask him to give me
a script for the therapist to evaluate my existing orthotics and
hopefully order new ones.  Also, when I see the therapist, whom I really
think is fabulous, I will ask him for brace recommendations.

The saga continues..............

Sorry to hear your ankle is in such rough shape.   Sure hope the brace
will be of some help to you and keep you from surgery for a bit longer
or at least until you are ready!!!

Hugs!

good plan.... I know PT when I was 17 saved me from ending up with the ankles
some of you are suffering with (that and an ortho who would NOT operate).

Ain't it great when you find one of those?  One that is available, I might
add, as we know there are a number or good, and taken, men here.
