MRI on Friday

I saw my orthopod yesterday.  He confirmed a severe Grade 3 sprain.
Duh.....  But, given that I have this miserable pain in the inside of my
ankle, and along my foot, he's concerned.  I can weight bear OK, but any
rotation in any direction causes LOTS of pain.

So, I go in for an MRI of my right foot and ankle.  He wants to rule out
an occult fracture, and assess the connective tissue damage and degree
of healing.  We talked about the possibility of an ankle reconstruction,
because he is also concerned that I have this awful habit of spraining
an ankle every six months or so.  Chronic instability.  Yeah, this is
getting really old.  I dunno.  The thought of yet another surgery makes
me really unhappy.  But, I'm not going to stress over it till we talk
again next week.  Maybe there really is no need to stress, as maybe he
will look at the MRIs and think it's not really needed.  Wishful
thinking, for sure.

But, if it's needed, I need to research stuff like success rates and
patient satisfaction.  I do not want to undergo this unless there is a
reasonable rate of success.  Has anyone hear undergone any such surgery?
I know Kate had her ankle replaced, but that's about it.  And, I know
she was satisfied with it. Oh Kate????? You around???????  What about
ligaments and tendons repairs?

I'm an inquiring mind, and I need to know.  This is looking like a
distinct possibility.  And, both my ankles are severely unstable, so I'd
be looking at two surgeries, possibly.

TIA

Similar symptoms for years and multiple bad sprains... some may well
have been fractures. Finally, a year of deteriorating ability to walk,
more and more pain, less and less pain free. Could not handle it any
longer.. new doc.. he ordered an MRI. Turned out that I had a fracture,
an unwound tendon that was spliting dead nuts up the center.

I had a recent surgery.  A Dwyer procedure to correct my foot alignment
(remove heel, realign, bolt and pin things properly into place), sew
up, rewind and stregthen the tendon... I am in my 10th week of
recovery. Still in some pain, limping around, but better; far better
than I was before surgery.

This is very encouraging.  I did a google search last night on "ankle
reconstruction".  I was specifically looking for reports of surgery
success rates and patient satisfaction.  I'm telling you, no way I'm
doing surgery unless there is a really good guarantee.  Problem is, both
my ankles are bad.  First I sprain one, then the other, back and forth,
on and on.  This is getting old.  So, if surgery is successful on my
acute ankle first, I'd consider a second surgery some time down the
road.  Damn though, I hate this.  I hate the thought of another surgery,
never mind two.

thanks for your input.  It really helps.

The MRI was quite an event.  They allowed 45 minutes for the ankle and
another 45 minutes for my foot.  And, I'm tellin' ya, they used it all.
I was on that table for almost an hour and a half.  At least, my head
was outside the tube.

But, my foot was secured rather tightly into a holding thing, and that
got really uncomfortable after about 5 minutes.  Then, it seemed to be
OK again, then hurt again; then OK again. By the time the MRI was over,
my foot was sound asleep.  Took some serous waking up.

I hobbled out, and went to my office for a few minutes to pick up some
mail and converse with some coworker buddies.  By the time I got home, I
was wasted.  TV seems like a splendid idea for this evening.

Thanks all for your well wishes.

shame it was so uncomfortable, but glad to hear nothing worse than that
happened during the MRI.  crossing my fingers that they'll be able to help
you with all that they'll find.

I'm sorry that you had to go through all that.
I hope that you don't have to have surgery again, but if it stops the
never ending series of sprains that you have been having, maybe it
would be worth it?
Not a very good set of choices to choose from, is it? In fact, the
choices just suck.
Please let us know what the doc says about the results of the MRI.

When the MRI began, it was definitely ankle conciousness.  But, because
I was in there so long, it converted over to some serious bladder
conciousness.  Needless to say, I made a bee line (as much as a gimp can
bee line) to the restroom after I got my shoes back on.  LOL

Yeah, the choices do suck.  :-(  But, ya gotta do what ya gotta do......
