They seem to go hand in hand, unfortunately.
Hi Rhonda!
I have Ankylosing Spondylitis, which is an immune disease, very
similiar to Rheumatoid Arthritis.
Being an immune disease, the entire body is affected, including, by
definition, the back. In my case, I have erosions in my SI joints (the
small joints which are at the very bottom of your back, top of your
butt). I also have erosions in my wrist and in my left hip.
There is a lot of information at arthritis.org, and numerous other
sites on the web.
As for treatment, it usually includes DMARDS (disease modifying agents)
such as methotrexate or plaquenil, NSAIDS(such as Ibuprofen, naprosyn,
etc...), steroidal drugs (prednisone), and/or biologics (Enbrel,
Humira, etc...).
I am currently on: Enbrel, prednisone, Azulfidine, methotrexate,
tramadol for pain as needed, leucovorin(fights the side effects of mtx)
and Soma (one at night to sleep).
I also have fibromyalgia.
IT took over two years to finally get an accurate diagnosis, it was
very frustrating and often very painful.
Are you seeing an RD?

I believe you can find some more information at these sites.
Good luck to you,

Hi Rhonda
I have spondylitis as well. My neck area and believe me it is no fun
right? Painful and the drugs taken are just what Charlene said.
I am presently having blocks done to my neck and well, I am getting a
little reluctant here cause one day doctor told me it was cortisone, next
he said enzyme injections. This morning nurse called and people with heart
conditions have to be passed by a cardiologist. DUH, another block is for
tomorrow????
You need to ask your doctor about facet blocks for the pain also. For some
they work well, for others not. Some docs feel they are useless but hey
when you are in pain, you try anything to stop it right? I am trying but
to little help right now.
I use a soft collar or a neck collar sometimes and it helps. Where is most
of your pain located? Sometimes water exercise helps too.
good luck

I am seeing a Rhemt doc and it is going well.
I am also in lots of pain. Mine is in my mid back under the bra line and in
my tail bone. I will ask about the blocks that seems like a better answer
than so much pain meds.
I can get some sleep when I take a flexaril at night. Last night I took a
darvocet and a flexarila nd I slept REAL good. I actually felt like I had
energy this morning but I was in pain again so I couldnt do the marathon I
wanted to do.:o)
