Squirrely - 06 Sep 2005 06:19 GMT I know none of you are doctors. But I just wanted opinions of if anyone else feels like this.
I am having an addison episode, so I have to be on pred. Only four days worth thankfully. But I had forgotten, the last few times I have had to take pred, my hip joints, go crazy. The pain is unbelieveable. Also my ankle acts up alot during that time too.
I thought with arthritis, alot of the time it stopped pain.
It does help with my shoulders and chest pain though. Weird huh, no comments from the peanut gallery Denise. ;-)
The pain is really bad in the hips while sitting, and laying. It doesn't hurt as bad when moving around. But then the ankle hurts like heck when walking.
This is one of the reasons I have not felt up to answering posts etc because of the addisons coming on and my grieving the loss of my friends this last month.
I don't have the money to run to the dr every single time something is wrong. So that is why I thought to ask if any of you get like this when on pred.

vickie b. - 06 Sep 2005 11:15 GMT Squirrelly, What do you mean an addison episode? You mention pain in the shoulders and chest. I have an inflamed breastbone most of the time. Is this the same? Yes, my shoulders and collarbone also hurt!
THanks!

Squirrely - 06 Sep 2005 21:15 GMT Yeah I have the inflammed breeastbone and the shoulders and chestbone.
I think I made a mistake in saying my chest and shoulders didn't hurt. I got up and my chest and rib cage are not letting up.

I truly feel for you. My ribcage was doing SOOOOO well last spring - then they took Bextra away from me and I've been on an NSAID roller-coaster ever since trying to find one that doesn't have bad side effects for me. So that's had the rib cage worse, right there. Then, I got a stomach bug about 10 days ago. after the 2nd bout of throwing up, but chest hurt so bad.... the third round made it even worse. it was still screaming when I went in for a physical last Friday. Kinda funny, actually, when you think of my relatively new PCP asking abouit chest pain and me answering, "only costochondritis and even that was better until I spent last Sunday throwing up". ah, don't laugh too hard - it's painful on those ribs.
feel much better soon. you are always in my prayers.

What I think I meant to say, is when I'm on prednisone, I will get muscle cramps across my lower back and down my legs.

My mom would always tell me that dad was "messing around" with her, so she was distracted (when she didn't say things that made sense, she was aphasiac). Stupid me bought the story, wish I hadn't, maybe we could have helped her stay around longer.
Anyway, I'm glad that you are better today (well typing wise anyway).

What you do under these kinds of,,,, missing time,,,,actions without memories,,,, Does tell a person something about themselves. You did well,,,, you tried to do the things you normally do under awake type conditions. Believe me when I say that some people under these kinds of conditions, are mean,,, cruel,,,, and/or abusive. You do not need to apologize to me. You may need to apologize to people who have never experienced such as this. Amitriptalene(sp) did the same thing to me and was the main reason for the falling out with my second RD but that is another story. Harv

Harvey R. Stone - 06 Sep 2005 14:34 GMT Hi Jo,,, I am very sorry about your response to Enbrel. I am truly surprised that your RD does not give steroid shots and that you have not received one unless it would effect some other condition you have. I received one right before my first Enbrel shot given to me by the nurse that was going to show me how to give myself the shots. Some people,,,, do not respond well to anti-tnf drugs and you may be one of them. Some people,,, do respond but it took months to have full effect. A person needs to believe that which ever drug is going to help you. The mind is very powerful and it is something we can not completely control. I do not care which doctor gives you a steroid shot,,,,,,,,, just get one to begin your battle with this disease,,,,, I have to qualify again,,,, unless it will cause problems with some other problem you have. May God bless you and your doctors pull together to make your life better. Please continue to talk about it here because soooo many people can learn from what takes place with you and what has worked for you.

But I'm not on pred, it's just a 'deconditioning' thing (am so out of shape that it impacts the joints). I found leg raises help, but only if I do them in all four directions (front, back, outer side, inner side).
Not sure if this is at all helpful but...
Thank you for our anniversary card. It was very sweet. Especially with all you are going through right now. You take care of yourself, OK?!!!

Thanks all for responses. I just wanted to make sure it was not just me. This has happened the last few times I had to take the pred.
Can't type much today because of this chest stuff. It is in the pecs, and armpit area and rib cage right now. It pulls to sit here and type.
I will try to stretch those hips muscles. Thanks.

Yes, I have this too it is awful. I am only 35 but my rd thinks I will be a good cadidate for hip replacement by 50. I have been on 5-10 mg of prednisone for two and a half years now and that is a concern for me.

The pain is incredible. It usually lasts for a few days (very long days). At least after those few days, I usually begin to see some improvement. It really stinks that the cure sometimes seems as bad as the problem. Unfortunately it is part of what we have to endure.
I hope you get some relief soon.

Mine comes from adrenal insufficiency that has been left go for two long now.
I am sorry to hear you have the hip thing too. I can handle my usual hip problems since they are so far and few between, but this is a gnawing pain that will not go away when I am on the pred. Although today it has been much better. Now it is attacking by my armpit, pecs and rib cage. Also my hands and wrist.

In the past, when starting high dose pred I would have increased pain along the sides of the knees- tendons or ligaments or whatever. Rose @}>->-- Being educated means that rather than fearing the unknown, one seeks to understand it. RB

When my latest RD put me back onto prednisone, he asked about my hips. (I have problems with my hips, at the inner thigh/groin area, on both sides). He mentioned that sometimes prednisone could cause this. I did a search, I don't know if it will help but I found this brief paragraph, and if you are interested, or if it sounds like what you have, you can learn more:
What Causes Avascular Necrosis?
Avascular necrosis has several causes. Loss of blood supply to the bone can be caused by an injury (trauma-related avascular necrosis or joint dislocation) or by certain risk factors (nontraumatic avascular necrosis), such as some medications (steroids), blood coagulation disorders, or excessive alcohol use. Increased pressure within the bone also is associated with avascular necrosis. The pressure within the bone causes the blood vessels to narrow, making it hard for the vessels to deliver enough blood to the bone cells.
I don't want to scare you, but I definitely remember that my RD mentioned that prednisone could cause it. I hope that you can find some relief soon, Charlene
Squirrely - 09 Sep 2005 07:39 GMT Thanks Charlene for this article. I will have to do some more research on it. It is interesting. I had a fall where my right leg was injured, something with the tendons I believe. But now my leg is deformed. There might be a tie in with this as this hip on that leg side is the one that gives me more grief. The other one hurts too alot but that could be from the blunt of the fall. I went down on my right side. So hitting the ground with the hip area, might have did some damage.
Rose, I also was thinking bursitis. When I get a shot of steroids, boy I go almost paralysed. They always give me it in the hip and about two minutes after I lose use of my legs because of it. So maybe that is what is happening with the pred pill too. It seems to activate the bursitis problem.
I am sorry to hear so many have this problem too. But at least I know I am not alone in this. I am doing better today. But then today is the last day of pred. I hope.
Rhonda, do you have addisons, or were you talking about the hip. I was not sure in your post. I am sorry you have to deal with this stuff too.

My neighbor told me last night that she has been having real trouble with tendons in three places, including one hip and one knee, from pred. She was on high doses for PMR and is just now down to 7 mg. She says the tendons start making a big popping noise and then just continue to hurt a fair amount afterwords for weeks (at this point). Don't know if this ties in with your problem, but there is more tendon/pred trouble.
