folic acid and sore tongue question

I have been on 2 folic acid pills a day (I'm on Methotrexate for my RA) for
about a year.  Since I hate swallowing pills my Dr. said I could crush them
up in orange juice but instead I have been just popping them in my mouth &
chewing them a couple of times with a swig of orange juice.  About a week
ago my tongue started feeling strange and I'm wondering if it could be from
the folic acid.  I don't have sores but the whole top of my tongue feels
like I've burned my tongue from eating something too hot and feels kind of
"chalky".  Has anyone had this problem?  Since I've been on folic acid so
long I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it or if it's something
else.

I haven't had this problem.
I have had mouth sores due to the methotrexate, however. They aren't
too fun.
Maybe you are experiencing some variation of that?
Instead of folic acid supplements, my RD has me on leucovorin (sp??),
which is a folic acid derivative, I believe, which helps with the side
effects of the MTX-hair loss, mouth sores, etc.
This probably doesn't help you much, but there it is.
I hope you can get to the answer,

I had sore and on MTX as well.  I was on 2mg but it didn't keep them from
being worse.  I started on 3 mg and they did much better.

I suggest try NOT chewing them for awhile and see if this helps too.  Can
you just put them in pudding whole or applesauce and swallow that way? That
sometimes works good for those who don't like to pop the pills.

good luck
let me know

Mary I'm taking two of the Folbic acid pills a day...haven't noticed any
thing except it has helped the burning arms a little......you can get a
stronger strength over the counter......mine aren't strong enough....

Mary,

You may want to have your doctors think about doing some blood work to
check your B12 levels.   Often times a sore or burning tongue can be
from a vitamin B deficiency---especially a vitamin B12 deficiency.   A
simple blood test would give you the answer if that is what it is.
Other wise, you may want to try not chewing the folic acid tabs to see
if that makes any difference at all.   Best of luck to you!
