My sister wanted me to send images to my niece, her daughter who is a PT
student, so instead I put them on my photo site.
http://www.pbase.com/di/ankle  I just felt like sharing with you all.

No, I'm not, and that's starting to worry me.  Unless I'm taking NSAIDS
and painkillers, I feel like an awl is being stabbed into my leg just
above my ankle.  It's been a week, and the pain is not diminishing.  I
have an appt with my orthopod next tuesday, which I clearly plan on
keeping.  If the pain doesn't subside by then, then we'll look at maybe
doing an MRI.  But, I don't want to go earlier, as I do not want to seem
like I am getting hysterical over a "sprained" ankle.  But, I gotta tell
you, this SUCKS.

this all leads me to a question....... I have not contacted my RD about
this, as I really didn't see a specific need.  I have an appt with him
on Sept 20th.  Do any of you see a specific need?  Should I move up my
appt?  I really just don't know what to do.

My house is a disaster, as my daughter and grandson left yesterday, but
they didn't take out the garbage for me, and my dog has it strewn across
my LR.  Damned doggie.  I heard her having some kind of mischievous fun
during the night last night, but I hurt too much to deal with it.  The
garbage is still laying there; basically an ice cream container, and
some Chinese food containers.  I'm not happy.  I have dirty towels
everywhere, and to add insult to injury, my ice pack leaked on my bed,
so I now have a wet mattress.
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa................

I need to organize a pity party.  I need someone to walk my bored dog.
I need someone to take out my garbage and vacuum the huge volume of dog
shedding that's going on.  She's blowing her coat now, and everything is
furry.  Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.....................

<sniff........>

two shelties blowing coat here, too. i feel for you.

do you have a good relationship with your rheumie? if so, i'd call,
explain what's going on and ask if an mri at this point would be an
overreaction. i don't think so. there's much an mri can diagnose that
an xray can't.

if i lived closer, i'd pick up your garbage for you. bored dogs are a
pain.

Thanks, Diane.  I sure wish you did live closer.  I'm going to wait till
Tuesday.  It's only a few more days, and except for my bored dog, I'm
doing OK.  Carrying coffee cups from one room to the other sucks,
though.  <sigh>

((((((((((((Di)))))))))))))))  We need to hire you a personal assistant and a
maid for the next couple of months!

As I said above, when I sprained my ankle like that it was hideous for the
first month or so.  And that was with propmpt treatment and it being put in a
really excellent tape boot right off.  (wish I could have taken that resident
with me just to tape ankles!)  With that level of a sprain, you have all
kinds of pressure being put on stuff in your ankle from the swelling &
bruising.  Keep that baby up.  Are you elevating it at night?  I was under
strict orders to keep mine up on cushions through the night as well.  And are
you moving on to using heat on it now?  At least 3x/day, 20 minutes at a
times, moist heat if possible?

I could be wrong, but I'm thinking this wouldn't be a good time for an MRI
anyway.  All that swelling would really obscure things.  Personally, I
wouldn't call my RD, but my ankle problems and mine are somewhat different.
If, based on previous discussions with your RD about your ankle, you think
he'd want to know now or he might want to talk to you longer and re-evaluate
some stuff more when you see him (necessitating a longer than usual visit)
than go ahead and call.  Shoot, call if you just need more reassurance.
Believe me, this won't come close to putting you in the "whiny patient"
category!

My foot's always up, unless I have to go from one room to the other (ie
bathroom).  Right now, I don't have it taped, braced, splinted or iced.
I need a rest.  It's up while I sit here at the puter though.  And, I
don't sleep with it taped either.  I hope that's OK, but I cannot stand
sleeping with the "confinement".  when I broke my foot a few years ago
and had it casted, I was miserable.  I practically asked my doc for
valiums, just to get me through the nights.  that was 6 weeks of hell.

I'm not going to call my RD.  He just looks at me like I'm crazy and
asks me why I do this kind of stuff to myself all the time.  As if I
planned this............  sheesh........

Please, do tell... What defines a "whiny patient".  <g>

OMG, your ankles look awful!!!!
I have been told that sometimes, a severe sprain can be even more
painful than a break.
Sending good vibes and some prayers your way,

thanks.  today was the first day that I am not using crutches.  I hope
it's OK.  I don't see my orthopod till tuesday.  I can bear weight on my
leg, but my range of motion is painful, to say the least.  I'm using a
cane and walking very slowly and carefully around the house.  The
crutches are such a pain to use, and my wrists are really complaining.

Having had both sprains and breaks on numerous occasions, I have to say
my experience with breaks is that I've only had displaced fractures,
which needed to be set, and all that crap.  but, once set, and in the
cast, the hurting stopped fairly soon thereafter.

However, with this sprain, it just doesn't seem to stop hurting.  Day
after day, it hurts.  by now, as a fracture, it would have stopped.  So,
in this regard, and with this being the worst sprain I've ever
sustained, I'd have to say, it's worse than a break.

On top of that, my toes are now dark blue bruised.  It looks hideous,
though the bruise on the side of my leg is almost gone.  The swelling is
also going down a bit, though still very swollen.  All in all, this
sucks rocks.

Wow, you really did a number on it.  Can only imagine how much it hurts.
Praying it will heal quickly.  And in the meantime, keep it elevated and
iced.

youch!  I've had sprains that looked like that.  Well, actually only one THAT
bad - one was more than enough!  Seems to me that it was at least a month
before the doc would let me walk on it as much as I could tolerate, and that
wasn't much.  Before that he really wanted me on crutches all the time, but
my hands and wrists couldn't handle them so we compromised on walking only as
*absolutely* necessary.
