Back from cruise to Bermuda with a swollen right foot and ankle

Just got back for cruise to Bermuda from Boston with my family.  The
cruise was a Birthday gift for my mother's 80th birthday. All her
children and their spouses made the trip plus one of the grandchildren.
We had a great time.

On the fouth day out (Wednesday) my right foot got swollen(no fluid -
soft tissue swelling), hurt, red and warm.  Went to the ship doctor on
Saturday and he gave me an antibiotic because he thought it was an
infection.  Went to emergency when we docked on Sunday, the doctor
there thought my problem was caused by overuse.  He said to continue
with the antibiotic because he was only 90% sure it was overuse.

I've been off MTX(last dose 8/18)and Enbrel(last dose 8/8)because of
post-viral bronchitis)so you can imagine how I feel.  Thank goodness
lungs are doing sooo much better. Now with this I don't know when I'll
get back on my meds.

The doctors just don't seem to be sure, could be infection, overuse or
a RA flare.  I've emailed my primary care and faxed my RA doctor so
they know what's going on because I sure don't.

Has anyone had anything like this happen to them?

Thanks.

Yes, Elizabeth.  This is what happened when I was first diagnosed with
RA.  I went to bed on a Sunday night just fine, by morning I could not
roll over.  I could not stand the sheet rubbing against my foot.  It
changed colors many times.  Finally on Thursday, I went to my
internist.  Between him and a foot doctor, I saw a doctor 5 times over
the next ten days.  It finally went down and I was told to enjoy life.
The left foot promptly swelled up, and that clued my doctor into RA.

Good luck!

Take care,

Vickie B.

Sounds like Rose's evil leg thing.

This does sound like the evil foot thing that i have experienced about
every six weeks for the past few years. For me, high dose prednisone
was the drug of choice, and i would take 60 mg the first night, then
60 mgs the next morning followed by 60 for a few days until i started
the taper. After the loading dose, the swelling would go down by half,
but the leg would look redder. The pain decreased by half as well.
My symptoms stopped after I stopped remicade.
The doctor thought that it looked like mediterranean fever. I would
have a high temp along with the other symptoms.

This is one of the most painful things i have experienced when the
skin was touched. It is more painful than bursitis and the ache of RA.
Recent cases have seen teh redness and swelling travel further up the
leg, and in both legs instead of just one.

I am so glad that I have not had to deal with this lately. I stopped
remicade in March, and have not had a recurrence. The doctor
eventually thought it was a  fefractory form of RA, or extremely acute
tenosynovitis.

It helps to take a good picture of it to show your Rd.

Have it checked for a stress fracture. I thought mine was a reaction to the
Blood Pressure Med--until the Dr pressed on a certain part of the foot. Off
to x-rays which confirmed the fracture. I see the Orthopedic Dr
tomorrow --in the meantime I have a walking boot on it (can't withstand the
weight of a cast) and using a cane (can't use crutches because of the
Sacroiliac Joint) with strict orders to stay off of it--keep it elevated and
ice it 3 times a day. Yes, he did adjust the amount of the medicine.

I had an X-Ray on Sunday.  No fractures.
It does feel uncomfortable rubbing up against my slipper.  I hadn't
thought of that until you mentioned it.

I'm seeing my RA doctor on Thursday.  Maybe he'll know more about
what's happening to me.

Thanks
