i've been excited about the fact that my "new" house (1986) has a
whirlpool tub, but so far, i've been unable to use it. first the water
was rusty. over the course of filling and emptying the tub for a few
days, it cleared. i was getting ready to clean the tub with bleach (as
in the instructions) and upon filling the tub, i saw two areas on the
bottom that looked like little pools of sand. i drained the tub, but
the pools remained, for the most part. i picked up some of the "sand"
and it looks like. . . insect eggs, maybe? very tiny, almost as small
as a grain of sand, mostly white, some tan and some black.
UGH!!!!!!!!!!!! they're perfectly round and they roll around like
little bits of mercury. i vacuumed them out of the bottom of the tub
(once the tub was dry), then did the clean the tub with bleach thing.
well, they are still there, much reduced in number, but i can't bring
myself to take a bath in the tub. (and i really, really want to!) they
cling to the sides of the tub as well as the bottom. does anyone know
what this is, and better yet, how i can get rid of it?

My guess is that you've have been visited by mosquitoes. I'd get them
out of there at all costs now before they hatch. Gloves and newsprint
would be tools of the trade for me. I could be all dry! (Can say wet
because that's what they're attracted to.)
Good luck!

the plot thickens, or thins or whatever. whatever they are, they're
coming out of the cold water tap in the bathtub. and since they sink,
we're not sure now if they are eggs. would eggs float or sink? very
weird.

Sounds to me as though your water supply is contaminated. Where does it
come from? Is it chlorinated ?
If it is from a storage tank. Have a look and see if anything is living
in there. If it is from a main water supply contact your water company
and get them clean/decontaminate the pipes.

Call Orkin or some other exterminator. You don't want
those things leaving the tub area and heading into the
rest of the house. Actually, here there is a company
called Waltham Pest and sometimes you can send them
dead [contained] bugs to identify. You have something
like that there? Want me to ask my friend Jack?

The only thing I know about eggs is that when they sink, they are fresh.
If they float, get rid of them immediately. But that's regular eggs. If
they are coming out of the tap, you need to have someone inspect the
source of your water. I'd call a professional fast.

Let me try a few suggestions. Are you quite sure what you are seeing is
biological. When my parents lived in western North Carolina, they had fine
powdered granite that would settle out of their water. Not so you would
notice in a glass but enough to see on the bottom of a white container such
as a tub. It was harmless, though they did start using a filter on their
drinking water. A Britta or something like that. The non uniform colors
sounds like that.
Here where I live there are government environmental safety office, state
federal county whatever. They will likely have an answer if this is
something common to where you live. And they will have tests run on a
sample of water you supply for just about everything from what sort of plant
food you need you use or what plants you can grow to safety and purity
tests.
Since it isn't Monday yet, its probably a good time to meet your new
neighbors and find out if this is familiar to them.

new idea: i'm wondering (from websearch) if this might be resin and
carbon "beads" from the water treatment system. it's a very old system
and there's nothing in the booklet that comes with it about using
carbon or resin, but i'm wondering. . .
i was walking the dogs tonight when i got an icky taste in my mouth and
crunched down on something. spit it on my palm and . . . it was a dead
little bug! i figured the eggs are hatching in my tummy and coming into
my mouth. . . nightmare time.

One extremely overactive and likely exhausted writers imagination coming
right up huh?
But I'd be drinking bottled water anyway.

Think on the bright side, Diane, there may be a book in this. :-)

Diane, have you been reading "Harry Potter"? :-)
Are you sure that little bug didn't fly up your nose or into your mouth
as you were walking?

I'm going to die rather sooner than I'd like. I tried to protect my
neighbours from crime, and became the victim of it. Complications in
hospital following this resulted in a serious illness. I now need a bone
marrow transplant. Many people around the world are waiting for a marrow
transplant, too. Please volunteer to be a marrow donor:

mystery solved!
1) the house has a water softener filled with teeny resin beads.
2) for some reason, the water pressure in the house shot up above 100
psi, forcing the resin into the water. they look just like tiny bug
eggs. plumber said we're lucky pipes didn't blow apart at that
pressure.
3) plumber installed a thingy that keeps the water pressure at 50 psi.
4) we keep our fingers crossed this is solved
5) from my websearch, i learned a whole lot of things i didn't need to
know about bug eggs. :-)

Ever think of writing a Stephen King type novel? You could use all that
research :-))))

Heck if I can convince Charlie all my computer stuff and updates is business
related, you can chalk up any internet stuff as work research right?
