MTX is potentially marrow suppressive, so you will need periodic blood
tests. How periodic is up to your doctor I guess. Others here can let
you know how often they have blood tests. Are you sure your doctor is
only looking at monitoring the effects of the MTX or are there other
potential health problems that the doctor is trying to keep an eye on?

Cheers,

I'm going to die rather sooner than I'd like. I tried to protect my
neighbours from crime, and became the victim of it. Complications in
hospital following this resulted in a serious illness. I now need a bone
marrow transplant. Many people around the world are waiting for a marrow
transplant, too. Please volunteer to be a marrow donor:

My RD requires a full work-up monthly.  The vampires get about 6 tubes.

That's probably only 24-42mL of blood. It looks like a lot more when
they're taking it though :-)

I go in every four weeks for blood tests. In the beginning it was every two
weeks, but after we stopped adjusting my medication and with stable results,
I was allowed to go to the once a month testing. Among other things, they
keep a track of your liver values when on MTX.

My rheumy takes blood work (cbc and liver profiles) every 8 weeks.  I've
been on methotrexate for 10 years and so far so good.  (fingers crossed.)

I get liver enzymes and a CBC (complete blood count) done every 2 months.  It
was monthly when I first started mtx but, as someone else said, with time and
being on a stable dose now, we backed off to every 2 months.  Mtx is really
hard on the liver.  Any halfway responsible doctor will keep a close on eye
your liver enzymes to catch any problems there before they become too
advanced.

Does anyone know if mtx helps to reduce gamma gt? In my previous labs
my ALT and the other LFT was elevated, but this time it was the GGT.

Ack!! Anothr error.

I meant milk thistle. Does anyone know if milk thistle helps to reduce
gamma gt which probably is elevated as a result of mtx.

I have been on mtx for 10 or more years with no problems, but
combining arava with mtx caused elevated liver enzymes. These have
changed since I stopped arava, but are still elevated.

Several of us take Milk Thistle to help our livers.  It has really worked
for several to bring their liver function to normal after it have gone bad
on meds they take.  Be sure to get the standardized if you decide to try it.
