Again.  This is getting old.  I was playing with my dog yesterday after
work, when my ankle just caved.  It felt like I crushed it.  I used my
dog to help me into the house, I called a friend, who came over and
called an ambulence, and off to ER I went.

I have a possible broken ankle, and the ER splinted it and sent me home
with instructions to follow up with an orthopedist today.  I have an
appt at 11:45, to which a friend will drive me, as it is my right ankle
this time.

I have totally lost count of the number of times I've injured my ankles.
They are so miserably unstable, and I just cannot wear braces all the
time.  Of course, when I don't, my ankle gets trashed.
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa..............

I'll report back later...............

di, as someone with totally messed-up ankles, i feel for you. i'm so
sorry. you really need to stop having any fun with your dog. :-(

i met my new PCP yesterday. she looked at my left foot and asked if i
was born with a club foot. (!) she couoldn't believe RA could do that
much damage.

i've been told to do the brace thing, too. so don't want to.

hugs,
diane

Di, I am so sorry your ankle gave way on you.  Hope it isn't broken, but a
sprain is more painful I understand.  Isn't there a soft brace you could
wear to eliminate it just giving away completely?  Surely hope it heals very
quickly.

Your ankle and my ribs must be related as I'm forever cracking/breaking
ribs.  My chest x-rays are a nightmare to read there are so many breaks.
Hope all goes well will add you to my list.

Aw, mannnnnnnn! Di, we need to figure something out here.  Maybe you
could use a skeleton version of a scooter when you're out with the dog.
That way, your ankles don't hold you up, they won't get turned, and
you could still romp with the dog.

Just a thought, DeeTee

Di - I'm so sorry to hear about you injuring your ankle again. I know
from experience how painfully frustrating that can be.  After 3 bad
sprains in 6 months, I was given a brace by my ortho called the Active
Ankle. Charged me twice as much as the following website but it saved
the day. It's a hinged compression type brace that came with
instructions and an exercise booklet. I wore it for about 3-4 months
and then a few more months when I was doing excessive walking like in
an airport or such. Check it out. Knock on wood - I've been fine ever
since. Hope you heal fast -- Diane W

Gosh, I'm so sorry about your ankle.  I know how it is to have
something that gives way for no apparent reason.  I hope you rinjury
isn't too bad (not that any are good).  Hopefully you will be able to
get back out and play with your dog (safely) soon.   (((Di)))

Thank you all for your replies and well wishes.  I saw the orthopod this
afternoon, and he said it's not broken.  That makes me happy.  I hate
breaking bones.  But, I have one horrific sprain that will take lots of
weeks to heal.  My ankle is hugely swollen and quite multicolored now.
It's one ugggggly ankle.

As for wearing braces, it's a tough call.  Aside from the collection of
aircasts I'm accumulating, I bought a brace for my left ankle after
spraining it just over a year ago.  I wore it diligently for a while,
but I hated it, so I stopped.  Well, now my right ankle is a mess, and
the braces are designed to be either left or right.  So, maybe I'll buy
the Active Ankle brace for my right ankle and compare the two.  I'm not
overly thrilled with the other one, and the name eludes me right now,
and I don't feel like getting up to see what it is.  So, Diane, thanks
for the suggestion and the link.  I'll hold off buying it though, until
I visit the orthopod again next week.  For now, he wants me to stay with
the splint that I got at the hospital, and move it as little as
possible, until it becomes less acute.

I really don't know what I'm going to do about my ankles.  I really do
not want reconstructive surgery, as it is a tough recovery, and I hate
surgery.  The pod and I talked about it today, but right now, he doesn't
recommend it, because it has such a miserable recup time.  Groan.....
I'm just so sick of doing this to myself.  And, I do not know how to
make it stop.

Needless to say, I'm rather depressed over this.

the nice thing about the Active Ankle is that it has a hinge in it that
allows your ankle to move but only at the rate that your healing is
allowing. That doesn't make sense but I don't know how else to say it.
It's like it's very stiff and doesn't move but as you heal and get more
mobility it allows for it. I think the one you would want is the one
that needs a drs rx anyway. I was given the T2 with the BubbleFlex
cushioning system. It is designed to use immediately after injury. I
had other air casts and stuff from previous sprains but nothing worked
like this one. By the way, did you see the page with links for injury
care? Very interesting. It has the exercise I did that helped me heal
online! And to think this guy used to make these in his garage or so I
was told!  Diane

I'm glad your ankle isn't broken, Di, but that sprain sounds so painful!
My husband is very unsteady on his ankles, also. The page which was posted
for the ankle supports is something I want him to take a look at.
What can you do when your  movements are limited. I feel for you, I really
do.

so glad to hear there's no a break.  You've had too much bone trouble.  But
of course sprains can be horrible to live with so here's some more hugs.
(((((((((((((Di)))))))))))))))))))))

Now then, do you suppose there's some place locally you could be referred to
that would have a whole assortment of ankle braces and supports they could
try on you?  You know, so you could find one that's tolerable for you.  When
we had to get braces for my thumbs, most of them put pressure on the most
tender joints.  I just got lucky that their supplier came in one day during
my PT appointment and suggested trying a new one they weren't stocking at
that PT place.  It's been the charm for me and I just re-order them from the
company when fall apart.  If they could just let you try a collection, at
least wlaking around a sotre or PT department maybe you caould find a
tolerable one.

Of course that still wouldn't make them any cooler to wear in the summer, but
at least this hot summer is starting to wind down - for we northerners,
anyway.

Di, Di, Di, what are we going to do with you?  I am so sorry to hear
about your ankle.  It's extremely frustrating to just want to be like
normal people without the braces and such.

hey, in the crowd I hung with in high school (and recently reunion-ed with in

I don't think any of us are normal.  We couldn't cope with Arthur, if
we were, could we?

Oh, man, does that sound painful!   So sorry to hear you are having to
go through all of this yet again!   You're going to have to train zuki
how to be a rescue dog if this keeps up!!!   Please rest that ankle/foot
and take good care of it.    Praying that it heals quickly and without
further problems!

Hugs!
