The heat is killing me

Every year, I look forward to summer.  I love summer.  I love the heat.
I hate the cold.  Repeat after me:  I HATE THE COLD.

But, this year, the heat is really getting to me.  I've never had AC
because I don't usually need it.  I cannot see getting it for the 3 days
of oppressive heat, when the rest of the summer is so glorious.  Right
now, it's 75 degrees F.  and I'm sweating like crazy.  I'm hot, bothered
and miserable.  I just took a shower, but that was good for about 2
minutes.  I had beer earlier, and seltzer.  I had ice cream and salad.
I'm just not happy.

My question is ........ is this related to arthritis, or the meds we're
on, or just plain age?  I'm on the usual meds, Enbrel, pred, folic acid,
miacalcin, calcium, zoloft, and the occasional tramadol, though I didn't
take any today.  And, I'm 55 years old.

75 degrees and I'm sweating buckets.  It was up to 86 degrees today, and
I took Zuki to the bay to swim.  We both came home stinking of seaweed
and salt water.

Any thoughts?  Coping mechanisms?  I dunno.  Maybe I just need to whine.

First, repeat after me: it's not the heat, it's the humidity.

Second, do you have fans? One summer when I lived in Florida, I couldn't
afford to run my AC more than 1/2 hour a day. But having a nice quiet
fan aimed at my bed made it possible for me to sleep.

Third, don't discount your basic hot flashes.

And save your post to reread in January!

It is the humidity!  Our humidities mid day are in the 20s, very low
and at 85 -90 degrees it has been delightful, severe clear every day.
You might try an exhaust fan at night to cool down your house, also a
dehumidifier might help. or just break down and buy an AC. Good luck,
humidity is one reason I moved from the east coast.

I also hate the winter. In Britain it is usually wet and comparatively
mild, but once that thermometer gets down to below 50F I start to
suffer a lot. Wet weather certainly makes things worse. On the other
hand I never feel so bad if the temperature goes below freezing because
most of the water is taken out of the atmosphere. When I was able,
going to the south east of Spain was a treat because the temperature is
highish - upper 70s - mid 80sF and humidity is usually very low.
As I get older I am more and more convinced that the weather influences
the way you feel if you have RA.

well, di, you're describing me. sometimes even with the ac on, i find
myself sweating. my face and head will be soaked. this summer seems
worse than ever. i've given up on trying to defrizz my hair. i just
wash it and let it do what it wants to do. i give up.
i'm on zoloft to help with the 6 years of hot flashes, and it DOES
help, but this summer, it can't keep up.

i feel for you,

want her to DO SOMETHING.  I guess I haven't given up yet.  <sigh>

Hey Di
I can sympathize with youabout the heat. I like winter better myself. The
heat kills me. I sweat even at 60 degrees. I am like you, I wonder if it is
all the meds?
whatever it is I am very uncomfortable and I am 64 years old. We do have AC
and better believe we use it. we have a pool but its been to hot to enjoy
the pool too.
take care and winters a commin!!!

It's the humidity, I think. Also, don't shoot me, but the alcohol in the
beer will make your skin flush, so stay away from it when you're already
hot. Unless it's margaritas...j/k.

Humidity is a bitch, for sure.  But, this summer I am really getting
hammered by it.  And, I know about the alcohol thing.  But, the beer
tasted SO FREAKIN' GOOD.  <g>

The humidity is hell here in middle TN.  I don't remember a summer that
I have been as miserable as this one.  Due to the pred I weigh more
than I ever have so I've figured that had something to do with it.
You'd think I would lose some weight as much as I sweat.  Even with the
a/c doing its job I never quit sweating.  Like you, I hate the cold.
It makes everything hurt.  Guess I'm just hard to please.

Good luck with getting cool

The heat and humidity of the east coast are two things I definitely
don't miss. Where I am in Washington I'm between two mountain ranges.
Even when it rains here, it's not sticky and humid. The summer has been
nice (high 70's - low 80's) and sunny. My apartment is on the ground
floor and is shaded by a beautiful BIG tree and I am so much more
comfortable than I ever was in NYC. I used to have to turn the a/c on in
April and leave it on until October.  Out here I don't even own one! I
did finally buy a 20" box fan, but that was when my building was being
painted and I had to shut the windows to keep out the paint smell.

Come to Washington :-))))

Di,

It sure has been hot this year. I hope things settle down for you and that
you become comfortable with the heat.

You are not running a temp too are you. Have you checked for that. I know
sometimes I think it is the heat and for some reason I check my temp and low
and behold it is up.

But the sweating has been bad this year with the heat here. But some of mine
is the thryoid, adrenals, and peri-menopause too. So never can be sure. ;-)

I know humidity just wipes me out htese days.  Heat gets to me, but humidity
is a killer for me.  And I'll start sweating at *nothing* these days.  I
don't think it's just getting soft after 5 years living up north.  (I know
it's not menopause as I did that all surgically 6 years ago and have been on
Premarin ever since.)

We survived in Boston w/o AC but it was rough.  We had 2 floor fans and a
window fan for our little 500 sq ft place.  And we often spent evenings at
the Harvard Coop reading in their air conditioning until closing.

We do have one window unit now and I'm not giving it up for anything!  It's
been an unusually warm summer in Michigan and that unit has saved us.  We can
keep our entire upstairs (living area, kitchen, 3 bedrooms, 1 bath) livable
with that one unit and floor fans to keep the air moving.  Even more
important, it drops the humidity big time.  And we only lose one window's
worth of ventilation on other days.  I *really* recommend getting one window
unit for the bad days.  Being able to sleep well makes a huge difference in
how you feel the rest of the time.
