I cannot believe that the widow in the Vioxx suit was awarded 253.5 million
dollars.
Evidently they want Merck to go out of business.  I don't disagree with
their decision, just the amount.  One million dollars should be enough for
anybody to win in a lawsuit.
Our justice system is just way out of control, IMHO.

the reality is that she won't get anywhere near that... BTW, wasn't is part
of a class action suit? - not sure on that. I think the jury was right to
award an outragous amount. Sends a message to the pharmaceuticals... I'm
sorry, but they are way out of control - and specifically with the
marketting end of it. They are so quick to get those dumb commercials on the
air, even before the drs. know the drug is available. So many more people
are asking for meds they really don't need or shouldn't be using.

Sorry, it's a soapbox issue for me... I mean - it kills me to think how much
money Enbrel wastes on their new patient information package and their 24
hour help lines. That's what our drs. are for, right??? arggghhh... I'm sure
that it wouldn't impact the bottom line of the drug cost much if they
stopped doing all this, but still - from my perspective, they are just
throwing away ALOT of money!!

Alilson, some of the folks on this NG have gotten very good information from
the Enbrel hotline that they could not get from their doctors, so that isn't
entirely a waste, IMO.

T'aint "throwing money away" as it simply goes into another
corporate account in one form or another. If you look at the
way big money works, you'll see an awful lot of money
laundering going on and nobody noticing as it appears to be
legit for other reasons.

In a way, I agree with you on how quickly pharmeceutical companies get
their product "out there" (heck even Stephen King did a column on it in
Entertainment Weekly), however...  On the Enbrel issue.  I've had 3
different RDs here, and trying to get in touch with them is a
nightmare.  My previous RD had me on Humira, I was having problems
(there's another thread here about Humira) and told the nurse about
them.  She "purportedly" told the doctor about it, and said *he*
recommended I stay on it.

When I finally got the opportunity to speak with the doc (long story,
but I was "away" from an RD for about 6 months), he had never been told
about the side effects (as *he* would have noted it in my file) I was
having and it wasn't noted in my chart.  He said had he known, he would
have taken me off it before the neuro stuff started.

There are currently 2 RDs here (in town) that are now 18 months out for
new appointments.  One drives to Aspen once per month, and that is
where I go.  Getting in touch with your doctor is always the best
option, however, from my experience, I've called the Enbrel line and
been given information that I'd have had to wait a week or more for
from the doc.
