Jason Deal (about 19), the son of good family friends whose sister and my
granddaughter are very good friends, was in a 4-wheeler accident yesterday
afternoon which left him with a broken neck, and the three neck vertebrae
crushed and shattered, with the bones throughout his neck tissue.  The
neurosurgeon here in Montgomery told his parents that there was absolutely
nothing that could be done for him, no surgery or anything else.  They had
put in a breathing tube to help him breath. Allen and Lorrie  asked if
something could be done in Birmingham at the University of Alabama Hospital
and he told them no, but they decided to take him there anyway.  They left
the hospital here about 2 or 3 this morning to drive over with the
ambulance; they had not been able to airlift him here because of the fog so
they had to use ambulance to get him here also.
Lorrie's  nephew was in an auto accident about a year or so ago that left
him paralyzed from the waist down.  I know all of the family would
appreciate your prayers, and so would I.

Thanks Rose.  I just can't imagine how the parents must feel as well as
Jason and Lacey.  Heartbreaking.

Jayne, my DIL just called from the edge of Birmingham to say they are on the
way home with Annie and Lacey (Jason's sister).  Jayne & Billy came home to
get Annie during the night last night to go to Birmingham so Lacey would
have someone with her, and she will be staying with them to start to school
at her new school with Annie on Monday.

Jason is in Trauma ICU on a respirator for ease in breathing.  They are
planning surgery one day this next week to see if there is a possibility of
fusing the vertebrae in his neck.  I am so glad they didn't listen to the
doctor here who said nothing could be done.  At least they can try!
Lorrie's mother lives in Birmingham about 15 or 20 minutes from the hospital
so when they cannot see Jason they have somewhere to go, though they plan to
stay at the hospital tonight though they can't see him again after 11:00
until 10:00 tomorrow morning.  I'll update as I get more information.
Thanks for your prayers; God is still in the miracle working business.

Gwen, I just saw this post now and will certainly pray for Jason and for
a miracle if it's needed.  Hopefully these doctors will be able to do
what is necessary for him to get well.

Jason is scheduled for surgery tomorrow.  He was put on a respirator and in
a halo when he got to the hospital in Birmingham.  The report yesterday was
that he could turn his head and had a slight shrug of his shoulders.  I am
still praying for a miracle.
Lacey is doing well staying with Annie and going to her new school.  She
said it is hard to smile when people ask her about Jason. but I think she is
doing extremely well not to be able to be there with the family.  Please
continue your prayers.

Jayne talked with Lorrie tonight about 6:00 pm.  She and Allen had a good
visit with Jason's surgeon today and they asked him if the spinal cord was
severed.  He said NO!  He said it was bruised, not severed.  That is most
encouraging news.  In the surgery tomorrow, they will go in the front and
put a piece of bone from his hip and hope the bones will all grow together.
They will also try to remove all the bone fragments which will make him much
more comfortable. Then they will go in from the back to put in a rod.  This
will in no way help in the paralysis but will keep more damage from
happening.  I just keep thinking---what if they had listened to the doctor
here and had nothing done!  Please God, give us that miracle we're praying
for.

Oh, Gwen, that is good news, and thank goodness they went further. May he
continue to do well.

Thank you Jo.  They haven't done the feeding tube and trach yet.  Seem to be
waiting to see if he can breath on his own so the trach won't be needed.  He
is still paralyzed from the shoulders down but they sat him up a short time
yesterday to watch TV and wash his hair.  They may do these other things
later this week.  The doctor said it will take from 6 weeks to 6 months to
tell just what his mobility will be ---or won't be.  But I'm still praying
for the miracle to be complete, and we're having regular prayer meetings at
the church during the week.  As one lady said, we don't want anybody with a
negative thought to come.  We are all positive there will be a very good
outcome.  It has already been a miracle that he is this far along.

Loujean, thanks so much for asking.  I had thought about posting but didn't
want to bore anybody.  He's had a tough time, had pneumonia in both lungs,
then had a urinary tract infection, but infections now gone and fever not
staying high.  He has felt pin pricks below an elbow in one arm.  As of
today, he and his mother are being taken to Atlanta, GA,  the Sheperd Rehab
Center, which is supposed to be the best in the country for spinal problems.
The doctors from Sheperds came to Birningham last Thursday and spent the day
with Jason and his family.  They said he was a perfect candidate for their
services.  (web site is sheperd.org)  He will be there from 6 to 8 weeks.
We are still praying for a miracle of complete healing for him.  He can move
his shoulders; still has the trach and feeding tube in, but they are working
on getting him completely off the respirator.  He is a little hesitant about
it--think he's afraid.  Still have a special weekly prayer meeting for him
at the church.  Thanks for your prayers.
