Hi all, this is my first posting here, and really I'm just in need of
some support. I'm 30 years old and my first baby is now 18months old.
It was during the last part of my PG that I got Psoriatic Arthritis; I
have the kind that is pretty much the same as RA. It is in every joint
and some connecting muscle. Right now it is past midnight here but I
just can't sleep. The Doctor today told me that now she wants me to get
a chicken pox vac. Then wait 3 months before I start Embril. I'm very
hesitant about the medicine as it lowers the immune system, and it's
not been out very long either. The biggest problem I have is how tried
I always am, and of course the discomfort. Is this really the miracle
drug? I'm also concern that hubby and I wanted another baby, but now
with this condition I just don't know if it's a good idea anymore. I've
heard that my daughter has like a 25% chance of having this? so I keep
wondering if it would be right to have another knowing this
information. Also would I be able to care for another child when there
are days that caring for my 18 month old is hard? It's hard for my very
good hubby to really understand, as I seem normal, will kind of normal.
LOL. So I'm just looking if anyone that has some advise from your
experience. Thanks for reading.

I have Ankylosing Spondylitis, which is an auto immune form of
arthritis very similiar to RA.
In fact, AS and Psoriatic Arthritis are, I believe, in the same group:
Spondyloarthropathies.
Say that 10 times fast, LOL.
Almost all of the drugs that are available for you to take are immuno
suppressents (sp?). Your imuune system is attacking your body and
suppression is the only way to get some relief.
I have been on Enbrel for over a year now. It is not the miracle drug
for me that it is for some. For me, though, it definitely has cured the
overwhelming fatigue that I felt daily. I don't have any deformities
yet (though my fingers and toes have gone a little wonky).
It is not unusual to be on a sort of "cocktail" of drugs for these
conditions. I am on Enbrel, Azulfidine, Prednisone, Methotrexate, Soma
to sleep and Ultram for pain. It is important to get the inflammation
under control, EARLY, before any permanent damage is done.
At Arthritis.org, there is a fairly large section on drugs and
treatments that I found very helpful when I was first diagnosed.
Perhaps it would help you.
No one is going to be able to tell you what condition you will be in a
year from now. These types of arthritis can vary greatly from person to
person, as does reaction to various medicines. It seems to be different
for everyone.
Good luck with whatever you choose,
Charlene

Thanks for the post Charlene, I Guess I just wish there was a crystal
ball to tell me how life will be in ten or twenty years. LOL. I guess
everyone would. I just feel so young for this, but that's life. Thanks
again for posting.

I know how you feel. It was a two year journey for me, between the time
my wrists began to hurt and an accurate diagnosis.
I am only 37, and never in my wildest dreams was the word 'arthritis'
connected to what was going on with me.
I am sorry though, that you have to deal with all this with such a
young child around. I do know that women with RA often go into
remission during pregnancy. I don't know if it's the same for PA. It's
difficult to get such a diagnosis in the middle of such a busy life,
isn't it?
Hang in there and let yourself get used to the diagnosis and the
changes that you might have to make to make things a little easier for
yourself.
I wish there was a crystal ball too,
Char

I, too, have been diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis - it's my finger joints
that distinguish this, according to rheumy.  Two end joints on the right
hand have become "mushy" with no solidity to them.  Very painful, as if
there is a pin sticking in the "joint" and very large and inflammed.  The
orthopedic told me there was "nothing" there to fix with surgery.  I'm at a
loss, since this deterioration progresses so quickly.

What distinguished yours as psoriatic? - mine was the finger tips; however I
have rheumatoid and OA in the hands, as well.

I am, currently using C elebrex but doc has mentioned methotrexate to slow
progression.

Hi Hiker,
I've had mild psoriasis since I was a kid, but not until
PG did it developed into Arthritis. I have the form that affects every
joint and connecting tissue. However the classic fingers and toes are
the worst. This morning I can barely bend one finger and the whole hand
hurts, lol, it's more like the whole body. Anyway, what upsets me the
most is that I've had it for about 20+ months and it just gets worst so
quickly that I wonder what it will be like in ten years! I have yet to
start any treatment. Some of that is my fault because DH and I really
wanted another baby before I started meds. Now we realize that just
won't happen, I just don't think I could care for two, and have this
condition. Anyway now I have to get a chicken pox vac. before the meds.
So that's another delay!! I just hope the Embrel works even a little.
Do you mind if I ask how old you are and did you have psoriasis first?
Also how did they diagnose you with three types of arthritis? I was
offered the Methotrexate, but at the time didn't want it. I've been
told that it has more side effects than Embrel too. Ouida

Hi Ann,

I am a mature 66 year old woman who has always been active.  If I were in
your shoes, I think it would be worse since you are a young woman, it's just
not fair.

My arthritis came with over use of the joints and no matter what I choose to
do, the damage to the hands ensue progressively.
My pain is not so much that it stops me from doing what I want - I continue
to enjoy my life, but I fear the devastation going on in my hands.

The doctor described my "goose neck" finger as RH and the enlarged and
painful thumb joints as OA and then when the finger tips went to "mush" he
determined that to be psoriatic.  Well, I've never knowingly had
psoriasis......   but, I did have lyme disease and I truly believe, without
confirmation from any doctor, that Lyme disease is surely the culprit with
my hands.

Tomorrow I will talk with a rheumy about using something i.e. embrell, etc.,
even though I wish I didn't have to resort to such strong meds, but I
believe it is now time - until this, I used ibuprofen then went to Celebrex.

Good luck and I hope you have that second child without too much difficulty
in life.
