Duckie - 10 Aug 2005 21:22 GMT I am assuming it is SP2 update? I am still happily running SP1. Had a nightmare of a time with SP2 so did a system restore and things settled down [this was at least a year ago] and have not really done anything but load updates which seem to know I am running SP1. I'm assuming your SP2 problems were related to software incompatibilities.
You're going to run into problems eventually by not updating to SP2. There are a lot of security fixes that depend on SP2 being installed.
By not having SP2 installed, your PC "could" be at risk to some security flaw.
Duckie - 11 Aug 2005 18:31 GMT It was something in the first of SP2 that didn't agree with the wireless router. My husband has finally loaded SP2 on his computer with no trouble so I guess it is time. Guess it is time to do a system checkpoint and go for it again. Duckie

I'm going to die rather sooner than I'd like. I tried to protect my neighbours from crime, and became the victim of it. Complications in hospital following this resulted in a serious illness. I now need a bone marrow transplant. Many people around the world are waiting for a marrow transplant, too. Please volunteer to be a marrow donor: http://www.abmdr.org.au/ http://www.marrow.org/
Duckie - 12 Aug 2005 04:16 GMT Starts with an L and sounds like link something. Can you tell I don't really care. rofl SP2 messed up his puter too when we first downloaded it hence the wait. BTW, he told me he just downloaded the new big update on his work computer and it cause his Zone Alarm to not allow him to be able to de-bug what ever he was working on. [computer software geek] He finally had to uninstall zone alarm to be able to work today. He says 4 others at work use zone alarm too and 3 of them had this trouble and the other did not. Go figure. Well, not going to do it now as heading to Nashville tomorrow for a week. As Scarlet said "I'll worry about that tomorrow". Duckie

I had problems after a driver update from Microsoft Windows Update for a Netgear wireless card (router works fine in most of these circumstances, it's the client cards that are the problem). It was shortly after SP2, and the problems were immediate.

I had some zone alarm issues with my Samba (Linux + Windows) network, but only on one of the virtually identical windows xp pcs! I switched to Sygate on that PC and the problems disappeared. Not that I really need it, being behind a router, I'm just extra paranoid.

Harvey R. Stone - 12 Aug 2005 18:50 GMT > (Sorry Harv! Nearly got past this one, nearly! ;) I want you to keep in mind that we may not understand the workings of computers as well as you do. We have to do the best we can and we make mistakes. If you can help,,,,,, do so with all our blessings,,,,, it does not mean we need to be talked down to or laughed at or ridiculed. We use WinXP,,,98,,, ect,,, because as a rule it does what we want to do without too much trouble until some little basxxxx with a twisted mind decides to give us a worm or virus or what you. They atleast are trying to make the abusers work for it now with these updates. Harv

>> (Sorry Harv! Nearly got past this one, nearly! ;) > [quoted text clipped - 8 lines] > updates. > Harv The only think you need to keep in mind with me is that, apart from having some strong opinions and principles, I also have a warped SOH, and encourage others to at least treat it with the triviality it deserves. :)
On your second point, has it occured that those who make a huge amount of money selling anti-virus "solutions" have all the phone numbers of those who make a huge amount of money selling the software that suffers from those viruses, and vice verca? Some of those "twisted little basxxxx" may indeed be the ones "protecting their investments".
BTW. The latest VectorLinux SOHO (Kitchen sink edition!) v5 is IMO far easier to install and configure than any WindBlows OS I've seen, so there's little excuse for sticking with "Billy's Folly" these days. Anyhoo, thats beside the trivial self depreciation I offered for your amusement earlier. ;)
