Johnie is doing fairly well.  I just got an email from him today.  He
bought some land and is going to build a house he designed.  If he's not
lurking, I'll let him know you were asking about him.  :=)

as coincidence would have it i have been doing a fair amount of
wondering about him also. he has apparently lost what little remained
of his feeble, little mind.
Over-extended and Under-nourished he plows ahead like a 'normy'  which
he becomes less of by the day thanks to the long-term use of pred. and
its least endearing side-effect...'osteoporosis' coupled with the
ongoing breakdown of these surgically enhanced hands. It isn't more fun
the second time around but i am appreciative of the good 5 years i got
from the replacements. The knuckle replacements aren't faltering. The
tendons that are left are rupturing like a bad round of 'russian
roullete'.

But like the only kind of chronically ill person any of us can allow
ourselves to be all of these little nuisances have to be ignored...even
as i have my good suit taken in another inch this year. At an inch a
year the good news is when i reach the age of 65 i won't have to sneak
into the annual "Little People's Conference" anymore.>g<

Even better news is i have reduced my pred to below 10 working my way
to 5. As so many of you know this process is BRUTAL no matter what
reduction method you choose. But the rewards for me are significant in
light of the massive amount of bone loss i have experienced.

My life is good as i sit here listening to my sweet Acacia fussing
about what he doesn't want for breakfast this morning. The love of a 4
year old can get you thru just about anything.

I really will try to stop by more often as i miss you guys and think
about you often. So many of you have become a permanent part of my
journey, despite how far i may drift away.

TODAY, my thoughts are with the folks that only last week inhabited one
of the great cities of the world. I am in shock at the daily reports
and search to find ways i can do more to help this special group of
people recover. My gratitude goes to the amazing city of Houston for
their generosity of spirit in this matter.

I wish nothing but better days for each of you lovely people.

lol and another pops out of the woodwork. Good to hear
from you Johnie. And I can NOT believe that Acacia is
4. How in the world did that happen?
Happy for you about the pred. I am down to 4mg and was
firmly told by my RD to halt there until he saw me
again. I am very proud of myself and know you are proud
of you as well.
Stick around.

Good to hear from you again Johnie,

I am sorry I have not kept up with you lately.

I am grieving the loss of two fms friends and possibly a third one. Haven't
heard from her since the NO thing. She was real bad off, so don't know if
she made it out of there.

So haven't felt like talking much or emailing or posting. I am trying to
catch up a little today if I can.

I am sick again too so that doesn't help.

I am sorry to hear about your hands and the pred issues. I think I have to
go back on pred again for 4-5 days since I am sick again.

I am glad to hear your pred is being reduced. I hope you can get it down and
hopefully off it. I know how much of an issue this has been for you.

I am so glad you have Acacia there so yo can be with him. I know you are
having fun with him. ;-)

Yes my thoughts have been with those that have lost everything too. Quite
the devastion for them for many years to come.

I am also hoping the best for all. I do read posts and do pray and send good
thoughts where needed.

Johnie, my friend, can't even begin to tell you the joy I feel at
popping into ASA and seeing your name on the boards!!

You have been dearly missed but always thought of and prayed for!!!

God bless the joy and love of children.  Aren't they just great?  and it
seems like they can make you smile and laugh no matter what you are
going through!!!   Give Acacia a hug for me!!!

How is Lucy doing?

So happy to hear that you are still plugging along despite all your
trials and even happier to hear you are at a point of being able to wean
down a bit on your pred!!!  Happy dance for you!!!

How is your breathing doing overall?

Many prayers and healing hugs to you dear friend!!!

I will give him a huge hug for ya. that is the easiest thing in the
world for me cause he is one truly huggable kid. Acacia has a great
sense of humor and is in that joke making up stage. We have always put
a lot of effort into making each other laugh but recently it seems to
have taken on even more of our time. its really a blessing to have him
around.

> How is Lucy doing?

Lucy is doing great. She got spectacular reviews for a large
installation we put together for the museum here and she and i are
creating a new piece of Interactive Virtual Reality for the museum in
Scottsdale this december. So we don't have a lot of free time between
that, the house, and Acacia plus Miguel is also finishing up his degree
here at UofA. Its fun but exhausting.

The pred reduction is really hard but "happy dancing' is the correct
term. Many of the bad side effects i was experiencing are clearing up.
Even the little pooches of fat and round face have gone away. My energy
levels and pain levels are still out of whack but i know its worth it
and eventually everything will calm down. I am now trying to get it to
7.5mg(.5mg. at a time).

> How is your breathing doing overall?

Amazingly well. i am worried as usual about this winter but am doing
what i can in terms of prevention. I always am thinking of you and
hoping yours is under control. I know how fragile it all really is. Of
course the key to mine is the valley fever and right now it seems to be
under control. One bad flu and all bets are off. With a bit of luck we
will both get thru this winter healthy, right...right.

Di and Squirrely and Diane and Gwen and Duckie and Kelly and RoseB and
Donna...

you guys always make me remember why i can't stay away for long. you
are all very special people.

you nailed it Di, for a gimp with numerous ongoing complications i am
'humming' right along. Have no choice with a house to build and a
schedule that has to be kept.
As i was telling my new friend "fred the rattlesnake"( who by the way
is 9 years old and also a real sweetie) 'one step at a time little
buddy, one step at a time". Fred is the resident 'Watch Critter" of our
little piece of the planet. We met cause I put my foot down about 6
inches from Freds head. Our eyes locked and its been nuthin short of a
love fest since. I discovered quickly that the only reason Fred was
being so docile our first meeting was that he had just swallowed a
large rodent and it was about one-third of the way down his torso. He
couldn't move if he wanted to. He was grateful i didn't kill him at his
most vulnerable and its been a relationship of tolerance and respect
ever since. Now if i can get my neighborhood 'mountain lion' to stop in
for a visit i will feel like i finally made it back to the wilderness
(such that it is).

I might crash and burn next year but i will have a dry/warm/cool
shelter with incredible views to crash and burn in.>BG< I am trying to
pace myself properly so with a little luck and a lot of support i
should be able to get it all done.

It seems so many on the NG have had a rough summer. Im sorry i haven't
been able to respond in a supportive way. I know from all the support i
have received here over the years how much it helps.

JEEEEZ,DI...I DID SEE THE PICS OF YOUR ANKLE. Poor baby, i hope your
healing up quickly.
I hope everyone is catching a break from these '&%#%$^^%#' diseases.

More later.

Johnie, I have only to look to my dear friend Duckie to see someone who
lives well with epilepsy. I take a great deal of hope from her example.

Rachel is doing well with her med. increase and is beginning 5th grade band
this week. She will be playing the flute and is really looking forward to
it. We try and take things one day/event at a time.

I can't tell you how much the support of this group has meant to us. I am
trying to help Rachel understand the huge amount of blessings her life
holds, even among the hardships. I think she's going to be an amazing woman.

Love to you and yours,
Kelly C.

It sounds like a little piece of paradise- especially with the tamed
"critters". LOL
It is good to hear from you, and find out about what you are doing.

As for me, I have started my 29th year of teaching. I know, I know,
but I was only 10 or so when I started. (g)
It is hard to believe that I have done this for that long. I recently
heard from one of my former students- he was in my very first class.
He now lives in the same province as me, and mentioned us getting
together at some point. That was really exciting- to hear that he has
made a life for himself and done relatively well.

We miss you when you are gone, so do pop in when you can.

You never know.
At the moment I am investigating something that will bring a new
challenge.
Here's a cute little anecdote from yesterday...
We gather together on the carpet for group activities. Then for
students to go back to their seats, we sometimes select certain
features to make smaller groups travelling in a fairly confined space.
Yesterday, I asked thiose with laces in their shoes to go to their
desks, then those with zippers, then velcro. One little boy told me he
could not be a velcro because he was Indian and his parents were from
India. LOL
Well I said, you can be both! You can be an Indian and a "velcro" too.

Yeah, my ankle is a drag.  Right now the worst part of having a broken
ankle is walking on crutches.  And, this freakin' cast.  I don't think
I've slept much since my leg was casted.  Next thursday, Sept 6th, the

Nann, in this part of the world you either find a way to co-exist with
rattlers or kill them. It is very common for people to have the snakes
removed and relocated but that is just a prolonged death sentence.
Rattlers are intensely territorial. When removed they will nearly
always die trying to get back to their habitat. Folks don't like to
acknowledge that fact but its more humane to go ahead and kill them
quickly than relocate them.

My feelings are that I am the one that has chosen to move into their
part of the world so it is my obligation to find a way to co-exist.
Most of the time this can be done with a little work and a lot of
caution.

I grew up on a farm and ranch that was full of rattlers and there the
protocol was usually to kill them. They were always getting into places
where you had to work and it was very common to get bit just trying to
get your chores done. A good example was; we irrigated using aluminum
tubes that pulled water out of a ditch into rows of crop. Each tube was
about an inch in diameter, curved into a third of a circle and about 3
feet long. Rattlers loved to crawl into the tubes when not being used
cause they were warm. You would start a tube by cupping your hand over
one end, put the other end in the ditch of water and shake back and
forth until you had enough suction to pull water thru the tube. The
rattler trying to get out would bite anything in its way which had a
50% chance of being your hand. Needless to say it was easy to
rationalize killing over co-existence.
But here it is a completely different matter and the notion of killing
critters
cause its inconvenient to have them around just doesn't jive no more.
Its also a lot more interesting to find ways to live with your
surroundings than just clear cut everything in your path. I am keeping
both a video and written diary and we will be publishing both when the
project is complete.

I hear ya there!  That's the way I grew up in Florida, in the days before
affordable air conditioning caused the insane population boom down there.  I
grew up with the belief that we should give alligators their territory, also
water moccasions.  We did kill coral snakes on out property though.  Though
they taught us how to respond if bitten, my folks were concerned about
protecting their kids form snakes on the property.  (We were just taught to
stay out of the back, swampy area when wet to avoid the moccasions.)

I am keeping

Cool!
