Well friends, the honeymoon is over and we're very disappointed. Rachel
is having a new type of seizure, one where she has an aura and is aware
of what's happening for much of it.

These are the 'pauses' that I originally posted about a few months ago.
In the last month they have increased dramatically and are getting more
and more intense. My fear is that they will generalize and Rach will end
up without control again.

I am calling the children's hospital Monday morning to set up a date for
a 24 hour VEEG, hoping to catch one of the pauses. I don't have
particulars yet about whether we have to keep her up, etc., but if she
performs the way she has been in the last couple of weeks, it won't be
necessary.

It seems that all she has to do is be startled to go into one of these
seizures. Last night she was chasing a fly around the house with this
little hand-held zapper. She cornered it above a door and I heard the
ZAP! She turned to me, said she was having a pause and I led her to a
chair. She began to drool, her head dropped and she became non
responsive for about 30 seconds. When she was able to fully sit up again
she reported not feeling well and then just started to cry.

It took her about an hour to start feeling right again, but she insisted
on reading to me before bed and did a great job with the difficult words
in Harry Potter, so I know she was okay. She asked what had happened and
I told her she had had a seizure. Rach was so upset, saying that she had
gone over a year and only had about 9 months to go.

I've been tracking all these events on a calendar and will add this
latest one, too. I hope we can get in very soon. I also need to get a
refill on the Ativan prescription. Ours is old because we haven't used
it in so long.

I'll update when I know more.

{{Kelly and Rachel}}  How rotten - things had been improving so much.
Hoping this is just a growth thing that ends quickly.  Will put out the good
thoughts and vibes.

I'm so sorry that Rachael can't be spared this.  She is such a delight and
I'm sure has a shinning future in front of her.  She seems to delight in
learning things and sharing them.  Maybe a future teacher or research
scientist or...

Whatever her heart might desire.

But for now, this is what it is.  Prayers and good thoughts that you will
find the answers and the help she needs sooner rather than later.  And that
you will all find the strength to handle the problems and disappointments
that come up while you look for and find the answers you need.

Awwwww, Kelly, I am so sorry to hear this!   How very frustrating this
must be for Rachel and for you and Brett.  Do you think it has anything
to do with the weaning of her seizure meds?   Sending lots of extra
prayers and hugs that they can get this all under control for Rachel
before she has to head back to school.  Poor kid has enough to deal with
as do her parents!!!

Keep us posted on how all of you are holding up!

Hugs!

Well, we never did begin to wean the meds., so I'm thinking it has more
to do with her recent growth, puberty and a need for a larger med. dose.
We had hoped the epilepsy would be a passing thing, but if she has to
have it, we just want her to have good control and not have these scary
things happening.

Thanks for the hugs and prayers.

Well just damn. But I am glad the aura is getting
clearer for her. I find that they are helpful and allow
me to get in extra medication when I need it which is
practically nonexistent now. Wonder if her medication
dose needs to be tweaked because she is getting bigger
or closer to puberty.
Give her a hug from me. And keep us posted.

By 1 o'clock this afternoon, when I still hadn't heard from the Dr., I
was starting to twitch. I decided it was better to be a pain in the a.s
than a doormat, so I called again. Again I got the voice mail. In my
most wonderful phone voice, with lovely modulated tones, I said "Hello,
this is Kelly Cobb again. I called yesterday morning and haven't heard
back so decided to try again. I understand you are probably quite busy,
but I am getting tense and would appreciate a return phone call. You can
reach me at work until 4 (and I left the number), or at home after 5.
Thank you."

Do you want to guess what happened? No call before leaving work, so race
to get Rachel from daycare, then made it home by 4:45. Answering machine
is blinking...I begin to mutter obscenities under my breath while
stalking over to it. Sure as hell, it was the nurse, apologizing for
having been late getting back to me and for missing me today. She said
she'd check for another number and try that, but that I should try
calling her tomorrow morning after 10. I think "It's not yet 5, I should
still be able to get her today." HA! Voice mail again.

*sigh* Tomorrow is another day and another chance to tilt at windmills.

Please excuse typos and bad language...I'm really irritated right now.

Gwen Love - 10 Aug 2005 02:12 GMT
Kelly, don't blame you for being irritated.  And I would let her know so if
you ever get her!

DO NOT WAIT UNTIL TOMORROW. Wait until say 8pm and
call. Surely the Dr. has a service picking up after
hours. Tell the service that you have tried to reach
the Dr. for two days but the nurse or secretary
apparently has not given the message to the doctor.
Tell the service you want to speak with him and you
will keep calling the service all night long if that is
what it takes.
grrrrr for you.

Awww...that's my sweet mother Duckie, baring her bill at the bad guys.:)

I finally had the nurse in charge of coordinating the VEEG paged today.
To make a long story short, the soonest we can get in is Sept. 6th,
which just happens to be the first day of school here.:(  We're taking
it...priorities, and all that. The next available date is the 21st.
That's too long.

I also requested a blood level lab so we know just where Rach stands
with that. We'll see how long it takes to hear on that one.

Thanks for the love, support, prayers and ire on our behalf...I love you
guys, but you know that, right?

Okay - but not sure why they don't consider these break
through episodes as an emergency. I would be sure and
question the doctor on that when you actual get to him.
I hate the nurses or staff or whatever making those
decisions without doctor input. If she has another
episode, call the office and tell the idiots that the
doctor called you and you are returning his call. That
is how my PCP told me to get around the dragon's at the
desk.
