Could drinking protein shakes have caused me to develop gout.  I drink
a shake almost every weekday (43g protein).  I found out today that my
uric acid level is 8.9 and I've had a few attacks over the past year
and a half or so (which caused me to find out about my uric acid
level).   Do I have to give up my protein shakes?

Also, is eating tuna a problem?  I eat a lot of it.

Maybe, but I wonder why you are taking in so much protein.  Are you body
building?  When I was following the Fit for Life regimen I used Myoplex and
other protein shakes as part of the five meal a day diet.  A shake would be
one of two small meals out of five daily meals.  For most folks that is
overkill...  It was good while I was pumping iron, though.

In your case, if you are NOT on a professionally designed body building
plan the excessive protein intake has probably contributed to the gout.
