FYI Harv, I have been seeing a Rheumatologist for about two years.  The RA
is in my hands, fingers, wrists and the OA is everywhere else.

My question to the group was what other DMARD's are out there, other than
methotrexate and plaquenil, since I apparently can't have either one of
those.

I'll do some research and find the answers I need, but thanks for
responding.

There are many DMARDs and your RD will be the one best to decide.  I
know that I was on Remicade for a while (great stuff), but became
sensitive after 2.5 years.  I have also been on Humira, which never
worked for me, but seems to work for others.

Currently I'm on Enbrel, it seems to work alright, but I've noticed
since I had to stop it when I got sick, it doesn't seem to be working
as well as it had.  There are also some newer drugs coming up
(according to my RD), that I may be able to try if the Enbrel continues
to go "downhill".

I hope you find something that you can take, that doesn't affect your
liver (not sure if any of the DMARDs I listed are "liver eaters" or
not).  Nothing worse than having active RA, and just having to "deal"
with it.

You will be in my prayers.

Lots and lots Jean.  Penicillamine, gold, enbrel, remicade, antibiotic
treatment, arava, kineret, humira, sulfasalazine -mind has gone blank but
there are a couple of others.  Try looking up www.arthritis.ca and the
arthritis society, and www.arthritis.co.za/

Thanks to everyone for responding -- it's greatly appreciated.

Since I didn't have RA I haven't paid that much attention to the drugs you
all take ... guess I should have.  :-(

I will definitely ask my Dr. about taking milk thistle to keep the liver
enzymes in check and then maybe get MTX after all???  We'll see.

Thanks again,

Jean

Jean, many of us take Milk Thistle for our livers.  It is amazing how it
protects the liver from all these meds.

Depending on whether Enbrel or Remicade has to be taken
with another drug like MTX. Then there is Kineret,
Humira, and some new ones coming
like abatacept which commercial name starts with an 'o'
and Rituxan which is an infusion too but given once a
week for four weeks and then not again for say a year
[at least that is what I had but they are trying
different time variation on its delivery].
I also take Arava but again it messes with the liver.
Have you tried Milk Thistle capsules? I had been on a
drug for years which elevated my liver enzymes and that
put is back in the normal range from a high over over
200 with normal high at 40. Tell the doctor and try it.
It might help your liver get healthy enough to try MTX
or something even stronger.

I am on Enbrel now. It is not the miracle drug for me that it is
portrayed as on tv.
As far as DMARDS, check out arthritis.org under treatments. They have a
pretty comprehensive list there of all the NSAIDS, DMARDS and the TNF
inhibitors on there. There are also message boards for many different
types of arthritis and fibro.
