Double knee replacements

Hi everyone,
My mom (age 72) is having a double knee replacement on September 6th.
Her surgeon is doing a minimally invasive knee replacement surgery.
She'll be staying in the hospital's rehab unit for a few days after
the surgery.
Can anyone give me any information about this surgery, so that I can
pass it on to her.  She's a little nervous about it.   She's going to
physical therapy now in order to build up some strength before the
surgery, which is great!  She's lost a lot of strength in her legs
because her knees have been bad for awhile.  She also has a ruptured
achilles tendon on her right leg, that has not be repaired because of
her age.
Also, if you have any advice on how to prepare for it and how to get
through it as easily as possible, I know she'd really appreciate it.

Thanks so much!

Elizabeth has just had this kind done and is very happy
so far except for her cold or was it flu or something
like that. Does anyone have her email.

The minimually invasive TKR is in my opinion a great way to go.  I was
walking up stairs in two days.  Since they don't cut the tendon or the
muscle the recovery is much shorter. My incision is small and I had
great mobility in a very short time.

Most of the trouble I ran into was unrelated to the surgery.  Tooth
with crown and filling failed and I needed a root canal (two weeks
after my surgery, the infection it revealed delayed my getting on RA
meds. so right now I'm in a flare.  I also had the misforture of
catching a virus (good news on that is that my blood work was normal,
except sed rate which is 90) I can start my RA meds today, Yipee.

I went to a personal trainer and worked on my muscles, not only the
knees, but also the arms.  You need your hands, wrists and arms to
support you.  I HIGHLY recommend getting into shape for the surgery.
Your mom will be really happy she did.  If there is a pool available to
your mom, she might want to try that as well, I found it helpful when I
was getting ready for my surgery.  You can do so much in a pool.

I would definately get this surgery again if I need it for my other
knee.

My surgeon's office gave me names and phone numbers of people to call
who had had the TKR so I could feel better about the procedure.  My
surgeon was very accessable for questions.

With a double TKR I think rehab for a few days is an excellent idea.
My bookclub friend is approximately the same age as your mother loved
rehab.  She was up and about and able to care for herself after five
days in the hospital and a week in rehab.

Hope this helps.

Thank you sooo much, Elizabeth!!  I read what you wrote to my mom over
the phone tonight.  She really appreciated the information!  (and I
do, too!!)
I'm glad you're finally able to start back on your meds and your blood
work was normal!  I had surgery on my arm and wrist last Dec. and
ended up having to go off my meds for over 6 weeks due to coming down
with an upper respiratory infection.  I was so miserable by the time I
was able to start back on them...it was way worse than the surgery
pain.
Thank you again for all the information.  I hope you feel better
soon!!

HI, I'm very new here. My first post.
My DH (age 57) had double replacement (bilateral knee replacement--technical
tem) last April. He is climbing stairs better than I am (age 53) and even
knelt down--altho the Dr said not to--he only did it briefly on one
knee..and was pleased that he could : ) He had the regular incision for this
because of underlying things.
He is doing very well and even swam the other night another first in a great
number of years.
One thing that is very important....do the exercises. Yes, the first week or
two will be quite painful when she starts but it does get easier and like I
said before, he walks/climbs stairs/etc better than I do. He does have
Rheumatoid Arthritis on top of this....says the surgery is the best thing he
did.
Bilateral knee replacement will put her in a 'special category' as most
people will only do one at a time. More accolades to her for doing both at
once.

Butterfly (been called this by my Great Aunt since I was 2 yrs old--would
run with my arms back and up--with my head down, body leaning forward, like
I was ready to land on something--like a Butterfly ; )
