Social Security disability application question

Hello everyone,
I have a question for a friend.  She has a number of health problems
including arthritis.  She is 57 years old and eligible for a small
pension if she retires now.  She is seriously thinking of quitting and
taking the pension, not because she wants to retire, but because her
illness is just making it too hard to work.
My question is:
If she takes the pension now, will she be eligible to apply for Social
Security disability in a year and a half?

The pension has no bearing on social security.  If she is disabled and can't
work she can apply for social security disability now.  If it is approved
they don't pay you for the first six months you are disabled.

Just a note for anyone nearing normal retirement age.  If you go on social
security at sixty two, you don't get 100% of your earned social security.
If you get disability, you do get 100%.  Of course you would have earned a
higher benefit if you were able to work to sixty five or whatever it is now.
But disability pays better than early retirement.  Not to mention the added
benefit of getting Medicare earlier.

There is still the matter of getting approved and of surviving till the
benefits kick in of course.

She should definitely apply now.  I applied now and will get almost $200
more per month by taking it now than if I waited til 62. I am 54 now.
Mine starts in September. In my case, I was earning a much higher salary
in NY than I was where I am now, so my benefits would have dwindled each
year instead of going higher.

As always,,,, Jo had answered you really well.  My question is,,,,, has she
seen an RD?   With the right help can she continue to do what she likes to
do?  Does he company have  a disability plan?   Many times that pays a
person more than disability pays or Soc.Sec.
I retired at 55 thinking that I could find work else where.   I did
not realize how hard it is to get a job when you have to write RA down on
the application.
After trying for two years,  I went for the Disabled program from the
federal gov and did not have too much trouble getting cleared and they pay
back pay to the time you applied.   Good luck to your friend.
