Hi Gang!!!

Just popping in to let ya'll know that I am finally starting the
Abatacept Study. I will get my first infusion on Tuesday, another in
two weeks and monthly after that. It is a 6 month study and no one gets
a placebo. I'm REAL excited about this one. I think it might be the
one.

I'll try to keep ya posted on how it goes.

Now..about that Gimp Pinic, it's a month away so I need to know who is
planning on coming. All the details are here:
http://www.rheumorweb.com/picnic/

I hope to see lots of ya there, Bob's making a margarita monster
machine!! Ya gotta see it to beleive it!

PS:
Just got a news release that Abatacept is going to the FDA Arthritis
Advisory Committee on Sept 6. Traditionly, if they give it a yes it
doesn't take long until full FDA approval.
Duckie - 22 Jul 2005 05:27 GMT
Wow. Good news all along. I sure hope this works
wonders for you. So my method for finding veins for the
infusion is this:
1. day before drink a lot more water and very little
caffeine
2. exercise a bit - doesn't need to be much but you
need to break a sweat
3. Morning of - start drinking water when you first get up
4. get into a really hot shower just before you leave
for the infusion

Not really sure which one has helped the most but I
think it is the combination as just drinking water
wasn't doing it for me. They had to wrap both arms and
search for a vein. Now we never have to wrap.
You will have to let us know how you are doing.

Can you tell us what is different about it from Enbrel or Remicade?

Hiya Harv!!!

Enbrel and Remicade work on the TNF. As I understand it, Abatacept
works by going more to the root of the immune system. T Cells are a
major part of the immune system. Abatacept blocks one part of T Cells
and prevents it from acting with another part to create autoimmune
inflammation.
Very basic and probably not totally accurate but that's the general
gist of it anyways.

Hi KJ,   Missed you here.   I am pulling for you with the new medicine.   It
takes some courage to be in the test group for a new medicine and over the
years I have come to know a lack of courage is not one of your problems.   I
hope your kids are doing well and they still get into my prayers every now
and then.

Yippeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!   I am soooo excited for you and keeping
everything crossed for you that this med will be THE ONE for you!

I eagerly await your sharing your experiences with this new med as this
is something that I am headed for, and just waiting for it to be
approved instead of doing a trial!!!   Are you doing a pic line or a
port or what for your IV access?

Right now we are trying for regular IVs. We're hoping that with a month
between infusions my viens will have time to heal. The other good thing
is that it is a short infusion time. If we can get a decent IV in it
only has to last 30 minutes.

We'll just have to wait and see how it goes.

Oh now that is really cool. 30 minutes. Do they require
Benedryl with it or not. At least with a three hour
with Remicade the stuff gets a chance to wear off. 30
minutes and I will need a cab.

No Benedryl! They keep you for a half hour after the infusion then you
can go. Said there would be no reason to think that I wouldn't be able
to drive myself home.

I'll be there - gotta get around to making my reservation sometime between
tomorrow's open house/backyard BBQ and my departure Thursday for Florida and
my high school band reunion.  I've been way too busy this summer --- getting
seriously tired.

Got my fingers crossed for you and the abatacept!
