Grrrrrrr................just got home from a few days in the hospital.
The sinus stuff (infection/bloody nose) along with an ear infection
triggered the breathing problems and off to the ER it was late monday
evening.     Got admitted and here I am home again doing better but as
usual exhausted, coughing my fool head off, and so sore I can hardly
move.

I am soooooo sick and tired of being sick and tired!!!    I know, I
know, you have all been there done that!   Uggggh!!!

The first night at the hospital, I had this nurse who told me that RA is
really not hereditary or from infection, but is primarily from people
being lazy and inactive/immobile!   Huh?   Don't know where she gets her
information from!

OK, here is my selfish whiney part!   I am really really getting bummed
out.   The annual gimp picnic is just around the corner and I am
incredibly bummed that I may have to miss this years.    This would be
the first one I would miss and I sooooo look forward to them every year
and the fun we have there.  This years has been moved up to august
instead of late september, and that is not a good thing for me at all.
It has been so unusualy hot and humid this summer, that I'm afraid if I
go and sit outdoors for a day and it is hot and humid like it has been
lately, that I will end up in trouble with my breathing and such.
Usually by late september the weather has cooled significantly and the
humidity is almost non existent which is much better for my old lungs.
Also, this years will be during KJ's 40th birthday!!!

I know, such a stupid thing to get all bummed out about, but hey, what
can I say.    They are always soooo much fun!

I also have to start deciding whether or not I want to give up my enbrel
or continue on with the more severe infections.   The infections seem to
be getting more and more difficult to get on top of and yet if I give up
my enbrel, then I go back to getting stuff like iritis, pericarditis,
saliva gland inflammation, RA lung problems, etc.
Hmmmmmm.............not much of a choice and am not sure what is the
best way to go and what is the lesser of the two evils.   Sure wish my
body would just co-operate a bit more and quit making things so lively!
I know things could be so much worse than they are and trust me, I am
very thankful for many things.   Just guess I am tired and feeling a
little whiney right now.

Sorry folks and thanks for letting me get that whine off my chest!

Pass the extra sharp cheese please!   ;  )

Yes,  I know how you feel.  I think this is serious for you and you need
time to recover.

I think that is good thinking on your part.  Its time for you to come first.

Yes, she is fun and we miss her not posting around here anymore.

> I also have to start deciding whether or not I want to give up my enbrel

It is something to talk to your RD about.   While I was taking that
TB-antibio,  my cough and the fluid in my lungs just got worse and worse.
I stopped taking Enbrel and I now have almost a four month supply in the
frig and my lungs have almost cleared up.   Stopping the DMARD can send your
inflam.arth into a tail spin that is hard to pull our of.   I did that with
Methx for this reason and Arava for that reason and went pretty far down the
road to being bed ridden like Kitty.  Enbrel saved me from that and I nearly
had to get myself a new RD for not telling him enough.

The infections seem to

That is why your RD has to have control.

Donna,

Glad you are back out of the hospital. Sorry that you have so much going on
again. I feel for you.

I can understand you venting about the gimp picnic and such. You get tired
of giving up so much because of your health and that is understandable. It
does get to you at times. You have held up so well so many times. You do not
whine often, and I would be if I was going thru all you do. ;-)

By the way, can you breathe better now that you got that whine off you
chest. I bet it was weighing you down. Just kidding here, hope it put a
smile on your face.

Know we have you in our heart, thoughts, and prayers at all times. You are a
very special person, I hope you know that.

Love and hugs to all

Whine all you want.  You need to report this nurse, she is dangerous to
have around.  Is she  going to take an incorrect course of action for
her patients; because she has mistaken opinions on a major disease.

The Hospital I use, K. U Medical Center in Kansas City,  MO uses a
patient survey for all in patient as well as out patient stays.

On my last survey I reported a food service person who did not want to
take my order for Breakfast, insisting I call it in.  Even though it was
evident I was holding a wash cloth over my arm attempting to stop the
bleeding which I had caused when I accidentally pulled out my IV. I
would have needed a third hand to phone it in.

Sheesh, Don, what a terrible thing to have to go through.   It is
unbelievable how thoughtless and awful some of these people in the
medical field can treat you.   I always pray that they never find

Donna,

Sucks that you feel so lousy. Don't blame you a bit for feeling feeling
a bit down and wanting to whine a bit. ;)

We'd miss you terribly if you couldn't make it to the picnic - but we
would NEVER want you to risk ending up back in the hospital just to
come. If you're not feeling up to the picnic, I think we're gonna have
bug you with a phone call so everyone can at least say hi to ya.

Take care of yourself and I hope this all starts clearing up for you
soon. I think KJ's still gonna start abatacept soon - maybe it'll be a
miracle drug and lots of people will be feeling better in the near
future.

Love ya,

i think i missed the "self-ish whiney part" in this missive of yours.  what

boy, i wish i could have been there when that sanctimonious catty nurse

i hope you feel loads better and very soon, sweetie.

one.

Donna....I'm sorry you've hit another bump in the road. As for giving up
your enbrel I know what your talking about. I did end up giving mine up due
to numerous sinus infections. We've moved on to remicade and after one
infusion I already have a UTI...so I can really understand the infection
stand point. I've been on antibiotics more this year than I've been off
them.

As for that evil nurse...well...I wish a week of RA on her...could it
possibly be mine...I have vacation planned for next week..lol.

Hang in there, kiddo!! Feel better soon!

Duckie,

The nurse was probably in her mid 30's if I had to guess.   Not really
very old at all.
The thing that surprised me when she made the comment was, I happened to
get admitted to the transplant floor as the pulmonary floor was full.
I thought to myself, geez, I sure hope she is a little more encouraging
and positive to the patients who are getting transplants than she is to
me.   Would hate to think that she would blame those transplant patients
for their problems or need for transplants!

I am so sorry to hear about your health problems. I am also sorry to
hear about the ignorance about RA displayed by the nurse. It surprises
me that nurses are not better trained in the area of autoimmune
diseases. I know from experience though that many do not understand
RA.

When I was 24 or so having my first tkr a nurse told me that her son
had been going out with a girl with RA, and she encouraged him to
break up with this girl because as she put it "you don't want to marry
someone with those problems". The son listened to his mama. I was left
feeling very badly though because the message that I was getting was
to forget any kind of normalcy in life and expect to live life as a
"cripple". I have since encountered many more nurses that displayed
compassion and understanding, and the realization that people need not
be limited in spite of a poor prognosis.

Hopefully this nurse will develop some understanding, and show a
greater degree of empathy in the future.

Take care of yourself, and know that we are thinking about you.

Yikes, Rose, what a terrible thing to say to your child.    It's a shame
too to realize that those type of bad habits just continue to get passed
down when people are that niave and stupid.   How awful to tell someone
to dump another person just because they have some health problems.
I have to agree with you, though, for every stupid and hurtful comment
or for every time some health care professional treats you poorly, there
are just as many out there who work very hard and are very caring,
compassionate, and knowledgeable!!!   Thank goodness!!!

PS.....BTW, how are you coming along with your recovery from your

>PS.....BTW, how are you coming along with your recovery from your

I was doing fine until I saw what I believe was the perp yesterday. It
did shake me up a little. We have a huge music festival in town, and
there are some down town events. After one of these events, she was
frantically gathering soda cans and bottles, and was even getting them
out of the garbage cans. While I am all in favor of recycling, what
stood out was her fervor in getting these bottles. She appeared almost
manic. It is clear to me that she is still desperately in need of a
fix.

My mother has improved somewhat, but is still dealing with the uti and
now maybe a uri as well. She is getting home care twice each day, and
has only been out to go to her doctor. It is a little worrisome
because we do not want her to become  housebound.

My sister would have had the surgery on the 19th, but there is some
issue with between her surgeon and the hospital, resulting in her
surgety being postponed until the first week of September. I think
that there are some politics involved with patients that are out of
that health region. I am not really sure of the details myself.

So that is that.

Only just starting to get calmed down from this.   Grrrrrrr,

When I can simmer down from hearing about people with this sort of belief
system I do feel sorry for them.

And it is a belief system.  That somehow anything wrong is anyone's life is
their fault.  If we were just all better people nothing bad would ever
happen.

And just coincidentally those who teach this nonsense can also teach you how
to be the better person if you will just support them.

Why do I feel sorry for them?  Because somewhere, somehow bad things are
going to happen.  And then they are stuck with feeling responsible and not
good enough, or they are stuck with a trashed belief system.  Or both.

Note:  I am not blaming any particular religion for this.  Its a control
thing that has polluted everything from witchdoctors to Islam to
JudeoChristianity.

((((Donna))))

I'm sorry to be so late chiming in on your story.

I hope you know how much I admire, respect, and love you. I think
you are one of the toughest women I know.

I can't believe what a rough year this has been for you. It's not
fair and I think maybe you've forgotten where the return line is.

You know that we should feel sorry for that nurse...she has that
rectal/cranial inversion and it can be tough to remedy. Usually
takes a size 10 boot to get that straightened out.

For every one of those types of stories, I hear of a good one, though,
and that gives me hope.

When I was in labor with Rachel, after laboring at home for 12 hours,
the shift changed at the hospital and my new nurse came in to introduce
herself. I greeted her with my teeth bared because of a contraction.
She reached out and grabbed my hand and told me to squeeze. Her knuckles
were worse off than mine and I refused to do it. When the contraction
passed, she gave me heck for not squeezing.lol I got my breath and told
her that I knew how much it hurt to have my hands squeezed and there was
no way I was going to do that to her. She told me she'd been an OB nurse
for 15 years and her hands were a testimony to the babies she'd helped
deliver, RA or not.lol I went ahead and squeezed after that.

It surprises me that there are still people out there who want to hurt
people for no reason. What did that nurse you had hope to accomplish?
Was she just having a bad day? Was she truly ignorant, or just rude?
Either way, a report to her supervisor seems in order.

Many soft hugs,
Kelly C.

Hey, Nann,
Are you anywhere near Northport and Traverse City?  My dad was born
and lived in Northport.  I had a very dear friend in Alpena who had
arthritis very bad.  When I came for a visit, we all went to Mackinaw
Island and had the buffet lunch at the Grand Hotel.  She asked her
husband how much it was, when he paid before and blanched.  He said,
"Never mind, just everybody eat as much as you can hold!"  We had more
fun pushing her wheelchair up some of the paths (this, of course, was
in my pre-arthur days).

Lots of prayers and hugs your way Donna.

Heh, my definition of "near" has changed since I moved up here!  Recent gas
prices though are beginnning to change that back.  Heck, I drive 30 miles one
way to get my blood drawn!

But, i live over on the "Sunrise Side", in Hillman, 23 miles west of Alpena.
Don't know about when your friend lived around here, as Alpena used to be
larger, but now there is no RD in our area.  Mine is out of Petoskey, but
fortunately for their patients, he and his partner also are "visiting
specialists" in several other communities.  I had to see him in Petoskey for
my first visit, but now see him in Rogers City.

We're going to Mackinac Island this fall.  The Episcopal dioceses of Michigan
have a biennial "conference" for clergy there in late October.  As it's at
the end of the season, the get a special rate at the Grand Hotel, 60% off the
usual rate (for the cheapest rooms, of course!).  It's the only way we could
afford to go there and we're definitely going to treat ourselves to it this
fall!

Guess I should read all the messages before I post.  I see that you've
answered my question.  Let us know how it is staying at the Grand
Hotel.  It's an old hotel.  For a lot of inside viewing get a hold of
the movie SOMEWHERE IN TIME with Christopher Reeve.  It's kind of
spooky but awfully good.

The lilacs are tremendously old there and just beautiful.  That's the
one thing I miss the most about Michingan

I don't know where her RD was, as this was back in the late 1980's and
both she and her husband have died since then.  Alpena is also the
home town of my priest.  Small world, isn't it?

Sorry I didn't get here for the start of the thread. My 9 year old
grandson was here all week so he could hang with me and also go to
Vacation Bible School at my church. I'm 20 minutes south of the church
and he's another 20 minutes south of me and his mother and I don't have
our own transportaion. Friends of mine who were working with the VBS
gave him rides (and me a ride the last day for the family time and prize
giving--Billy got the prize he had his eye on all week). He had a great
time and pretty much so did I (but I am worn out LOL).

Donna, I hope you get around to at least mentioning that nurse on some
kind of survey or when you see your doctor.  I ran into a doctor like
that one time in ER many a moon ago.

Donna, you have had a bad year and now it's time to heal.
I got furious when I read about that nurse, It recalled memories of an
ENT doc I saw who told me I didn't have RA and should exercise more to
get limber. He said his 92 year old mother, recovering from hip surgery,
moved better than I did.
I managed to blurt out that I was there about an ear problem but almost
burst into tears.
Forget this poor excuse for a medical professional and concentrate on
getting better.  I'm sorry if you have to miss the picnic but I'm sure
everyone able to get there will be thinking of you that day.

Yikes, Ann, you are one together lady.  I think I would have been
inclined to lose it with that ENT specialist with a remark like that.

Grrrrrr...........ignorance is NOT bliss!
