Dear Bonnie,
That was one of my first areas to have arthritis. Keep up moving your
shoulders though very gently! And see you rheumy!
Good luck!

Oh my gosh yes!!!!! I went thru months of physical therapy because of
frozen shoulders caused by OA. Have also had many cortisone shots in the
shoulder joints.
Bonnie Brien - 11 Jul 2005 04:02 GMT
Well then I'll have to tell my doctor...He'll send me for x-rays just
as he did when I had paiin in my fingers and wrists
Bonnie Brien - 11 Jul 2005 05:43 GMT
I don't have a lot of shoulder movement--never did--now they hurt.
Finally got my voltaren refill--spent nearly a week on Advil--because
the pharmacy lied (told mailed out 7-2-05 and 7-6-06) twice about when
it was mailed out (actually mailed out 7-7-05 didn't get it till July
9th.
I was livid!

Yes, but.....there are over 100 forms of arthritis according to
the Arthritis Foundation, and no one in this group is qualified
to made a guess as to what is the reason for your pain.
Only a rheumatologist -- RD-- can make an proper diagnosis.
(You have been to one, haven't you?)
There are too many other factors that could be involved for
anyone to make a guess. The longer you put off getting a
diagnosis, the longer whatever is causing the problem has
to intensify and cause irrepairable damage.

Doc says it is likely arthritis. Have it in my back (which was x-rayed
already) .......and the next time I go to visit him he'll order x-rays
BEFORE I go to see him.
Stay on medication...it's probably because I've been totally off the
med. voltaren a week that I noticed the pain in shoulders
Bonnie
Bonnie Brien - 12 Jul 2005 01:27 GMT
probably see him in a few months because after a while medicare/
medicaid won't pay for your meds refills unless you see your doc every
now and then
No rheumatologist referral yet.

I have a hospital bed....the matress lies on the springs....
the arthritis (in back) was caused by a used hospital bed matress that I
used for 3 years (kept getting up with a backache) ,but I was never told
how old the mattress was when I received the used bed.
That mattress finally ot thrown out about 2 years ago.

I put a baffled featherbed and a visco elastic mattress topper on my bed...
after that, I no longer have pain in my shoulder and the pain in my hips
have significantly decreased.
I hate hospital beds! I think they are horribly uncomfortable.

I had arthritis in both shoulders, and have now had two hemi-arthroplasty
ops to sort them out. The pain was dreadful, cos I'd left it too long to get
it sorted. Now I have no pain, but restricted movement, so that's a great
improvement.
Please follow advice and see a Rheumy, and not just your doctor.

Does one need a docs referal for a rheumatologist?

Yes you do, at least in Canada.

That might depend on the RD [some won't take a patience
without one] and it might depend on your insurance
[some might not pay for a visit that had not been
referred]. You might be able to get away without one
but I wouldn't risk it unless you are made of money. ;)

That depends on your insurance/HMO/PPO.
And it may depend on the rheumatologist (RD). Some
doctors, not only RDs, won't accept new patients without
a referal from a GP/PCP.

Is there a way that you can apply heat packs or ice to the shoulders.
It does help, and which you use may depend on how much inflammation is
present. If the area is hot and inflamed looking ice may be your best
bet.

One more thing... don't forget to try some range of motion exercises
in order to maintain function. There is a condition called "frozen
shoulder" in which the joints seize up and you lose the ability to
move. The best way is to apply heat or ice and then try some gentle
exercises, if you are able.

Don't have a lot of rotation movement in sholders--never did with

When I was born--I was held back in the birth canal, (mom's knees held
together) ready to come but rookie nurses held me inside my mom til doc
got there

Bonnie,
Yes you can have arthritis in you shoulders. I have had both of my
shoulders replaced because of my RA. One very important thing to keep
in mind about shoulders is that the RA can destroy the tendons and
muscles around the shoulder which renders the replacements almost
useless if it reaches that stage.
I would highly recommend that not only an RD is necessary in this
instance, but also an orthopedic surgeon specializing in shoulder
replacement.
I was very very lucky that mine was caught before any damage was done
and my replacements work great for me.
