Enbrel approved

I've been quiet about this because I didn't want to jinx it,
but I've gotten approved for Enbrel after a fairly disgraceful
amount of wailing and gnashing of teeth on the part of the
insurance company (Anthem).  An emotional roller coaster to
shift from stabbing long vicious needles into a voodoo doll
to stabbing short therapeutic ones into me...

I'm cautiously optimistic.

The odds are in your favor that it will work for you. Good luck.

My initial approval through Tuft Medical took four days, my second
approval through Cigna took four months and they only approved it for
seven months. I now begin the fight for an extension, if the approval
time increases exponentially I should expect to hear sometime in
November of 2014.

and that is what lawyers are for,,,, if they stop your medicine when its
working for you,,,, they are responsible for what takes place.

Good for you!  As far as I know, the odds are in your favour.  I'm
hoping for the best.  It's been great for me.

Ok, after week #1

Gave myself the shot on Friday evening - mildly uncomfortable
for a few hours and groggy the next day, not bad.  That's the
good news.

The bad news is this: 12 hours after the injection, Cathy
informed me that she thinks she has a cold.  24 hours after
that, I had it too.  Cathy has started hacking up green stuff
so respiratory infection is pretty much inevitable for me
too given the fact that she comes into my study and describes
her symptoms between fits of coughing.  And when I mentioned
last night that I really do need to avoid exposure to infection
she got huffy so now I'm in the dog house on top of everything
else.

So I called my RD.  Their response: "Stop the Enbrel at once.
Get antibiotics to kill the infection.  Then when you're ready
to go again you have to come into the office and let us monitor
you for a half hour because this might have been a 'reaction'."
So after my next shot (hard to tell when that might be) I get
to have the shot then drive myself home while I'm feeling the
post-shot queasies.  Grrr.

Sounds like a plan for you but what are you going to do about your mates
coughing up green stuff.

I spent a couple of tense moments last night being told that
green stuff does not equal infection, and I have learned from
long experience that I don't have any sort of authority to
tell her anything about medical matters.  She watches lots
of Discovery health programs that I find distasteful so I
don't doubt that she's seen more of that sort of thing than
I have.  But when I'm coughing up green stuff, I know I've
got an infection.

My plan is to attend to my own symptoms and respect her right
to make those determinations for herself.  I was told many
years ago that it's vitally necessary in cases like this to
have the last words, just as long as those words are "Yes
Dear..."

Great!
I hope that the approval comes through quickly.

I myself had my first enbrel injection last Sunday, and the second on
Wednesday. I actually feel pretty good. There is some residual
soreness and stiffness, but it is not bad. It is still to early in the
process to know if the result is strictly because of the enbrel, or
because I am getting more rest due to being off for the summer.

My voice quality has improved. I am so tired of being hoarse all the
time, and sometimes there has been no voice at all.

Wishing  you a great result,
