I've added the pictures Steven took while on the Jet Boat trip up the Rogue
River from Gold Beach.  I wish I'd sent him with a better camera!

It's safe to say it never would have happened if Charlie and I had gone
along, or if we had sent a decent camera with Steven and Ryan.

Looks like they had a great trip.  Bears are really common in that
section of the river.  Once the FS went into clean toilets and check
campsites, when they returned "smokey" was in the jet boat happily
noshing on their lunch boxes.  You can imagine the hilarity of the
passing rafts.  One fellow kept his lunch box it had a couple of
puncture holes in it.... made for a great story.  The Bears aren't
dangerous  but they are a huge nuisance. I think since the giant fire
in the Kalmiopsis they have been displaced into other areas and now
they are a problem in many more places.  We keep our kitchen in a
military box with metal latches on 4 sides.  One night we awoke to a
bear rolling the box down the beach I guess she figured she would open
it at her leisure. We chased her off. -- MZ

Please give those bears, even black bears, plenty of room.  You never know
when a cub is too close and then they do not run away  but you know that.  A
9mm on your hip is a good thing.
