Hi Duckie,
I've read your posts on your wrist replacement...I'm deciding  between a
replacement and a fusion of my left wrist.  My right wrist is auto fused and
I will be having surgery to redo it surgically.  The surgeon prefers fusing
the left because of my age (42) but will replace if I decide to go that way.
I know your prothesis ( is yours one of the silicone types or metal) broke
at one point and it was rereplaced.  Other than that how has it held up?
Have you had any problems with it?  What kind of motion do you have
especially compared to your fused wrist.  Would you do it again?
I hope you don;t mind me asking.  You are the only person I "know" that has
had this done.

Thanks a million
Karen

LOL - I know Duckie will be along to fill you in more, but I recall that the
replacement that broke did so when she was swing dancing.  Avoid swing
dancing and you might have better luck  ;)(I think she has one fused and one
replaced, which seems like a good balance to me but I don't really have the
experience to back that up.  I just know that I really miss my wrist
flexability when I have to wear my brace and the 10 weeks it was pinned were
aggravating beyond words.)

I nixed (wrist) fusion because it would limit range of motion.  Have a
plastic splint to rest it--so don't over use it

Doc didn't say a thing about wrist replacement

I don't have much support when lifting left haned, opening doors

REPLACE  ohh sorry. shhh My left is fused and when I
have had any surgery on my right, I have to use a tool
to wipe my own bottom. I could not put in or take out
tampons. The fingers will just not reach if the wrist
can't bend.
I have silicone cause that is what my doctor uses. The
first wrist I worked very hard at the exercises given
me at OT. Unfortunately, even in two days between my
first visit and my second, I had gotten more bend than
they really wanted which put the implant at greater
risk of breaking. Then I ran into a rough swing partner
who snapped what must have been an already tenuous
thread of the silicone. So we did it again. Actually,
by the time the cast was off, I already had as much
bend as they want you to achieve so that was a one and
only visit to OT that time. So if you opt for the
replacement and it is a silicone replacement, ask
EXACTLY how much bend should you be looking for before
you get gung-ho. The bend is just enough to reach what
I need too.
I had OT build me a cast that I dance in now. That is
the only place I wear it. It fits very snugly and will
allow NO movement of my wrist. But I still only dance
swing with a teacher or a student I know to be very
gentle. I don't do hustle anymore and very rarely
mambo. All are rapid dances that guys have a tendency
to be rough with. That girl that won the dancing with
the stars last night -- her teacher and I would have
had major words. He was jerking her this way and that
and at one point he turned her while her shoulder was
in the wrong spot. I swore at him and I was only
watching. lol
Now all that being said, I like the fact that I have
one wrist with the metal bar and one that is replaced.
I have a great deal of strength with the metal bar
wrist and can lift heavy things with just that hand. I
have a ten pound limit on the replacement wrist and I
am very careful with it.
I would have this replacement done again in a heart
beat. Allows me to go one with my life. Can't imagine
having to carry a bottom wiper in a purse for the rest
of my life. And there was that time I had to get John
to remove a tampon. Never again. Of course -- don't
need them anymore now but you see my point.
Ask me anything else you need to.

So do you think the other couple should have won?

Yes'm. lol  And that tall model that went out in the
first or second show should have been there in the end.
She was over her own feet meaning the teacher wasn't
shoving her around.
But the guy that came in second should have won. He had
a natural frame that was perfect. yummmm

I thought so too. I thought he was a shoe-in. He had a natural grace,
and seemed to take on the persona that went with their chosen dance.

But I was happy for the couple that won also.

I just think that would be so hard to judge. Of course they do know
what to look for, whereas I do not.

Duckie,
I appreciate the graphicness.  I know exactly what you are describing.  I'm
leaning towards the replacement/fusion mix.  I've been "too young" for my
knee replacements, shoulder replacements, and my elbow replacement so why
should it be any different for my wrist.  I ave surgery on my right thumb
(fusion) scheduled in August so once I get through that I'll start really
thinking about the next step on my wirsts.  Did you do the fusion or the
replacement first?

Thanks for your help

My left wrist was first and it was too far gone to do a
replacement -- at least the type that was offered at
the time. It probably could have been done with the
metal type I have seen on line recently but I am only
guessing. When the right wrist got bad, I went before
it was too late and had the right wrist replaced.
So left wrist was fused and I subsequently had finger
surgery on my right hand and that is when I discovered
the horrors of that fused wrist. It helped make the
early decision on the right one wrist. Did that make sense?
BTW, x-rays did not show the extent of the damage to
the left wrist and I went into surgery not knowing if
it was going to be replaced or fused. My surgeon says
it was one of the worse he had seen. All the little
bones had collapsed on each other. Turned out I didn't
need to take bone from the hip cause he had plenty to
work with in my hand.
It was at that surgery that he took tissue and sent it
to the lab. That tissue was what finally nailed my
diagnosis -- it was rheumatoid tissue. It took 15 years
and the loss of that wrist to finally get treatment. It
wasn't until I loss the finger joints on my right hand
that I was finally put on my first Dmard. Dmard's were
last resort back then. Now I am on three. What a
journey. :)
So what does a replacement fusion combo look like? Got
a web site I can look at?
