just got off the phone with comcast---long and tedious process.  it appears
my firewall went kaplooie or something, because it started interfering with
sending emails and stuff, shortly after things were working again after the
48 hour block.  had to turn the firewall off and am running with it being
turned off now.  email fixed.  hope it also works for newsgroups, too.
fingers crossed.

May I recommend one that I love, and was highly praised by our friend Larry?
Zone Alarm, at zonelabs.com. Free and worth a million. Easy to configure and
does a great job.

I use zone alarm the free version it works great.  Firewalls are
extremely important for those with broadband connections.  Often the
machine will have open ports a hacker will ping your machine, and when
your machine responds they can hack your computer and turn it into a
zombie and send spam e-mail through it or steal your personal
information.   You want your machine to operate in stealth mode.
There are also worms on the internet that will spread via internet
connection.  If your machine responds you will get the worm.  This
happened with several worms recently.  On broad band you are on line
for a long time which makes your machine a prime target especially
with all that bandwidth.  ISPs are starting to aggressively shut off
zombie machines because a lot of spam is sent via dummy machines.

Also a firewall will protect you from internal  malicious software.
For example spyware phoning home.  A firewall like zone alarm will
tell you if a program is accessing the internet.  You can set up your
routine programs to always connect to the internet it is nice to know
if you suddenly have a new program trying to phone home.  How would
you know if you have a backdoor trojan sending out all sorts of
information from your machine?  The firewall will tell you if this is
happening. The xp firewall is for external use it will not tell you if
an internal program is trying to phone home.

I love zone alarm it works well and best of all  it is free.
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?lid=nav_za

No need for zone alarm pro unless you want to pay for more feature the
basic works just fine.  In the beginning you will get warnings about
programs after you affirm it is ok to access it will just run in the
background until you pick up spyware or other malicious programs.

I use Norton Internet Security 2005 and run Windows XP with Service
Pack 2 and have had no problems with it.  I update when it tells me to
and have it automatically to do a complete scan once a week.  If a new
virus comes out, I do a Live Update and the a complete scan.  Of
course, I do have a son who is an expert on computers (manager of
repair department at Best Buy). :-)

That's what we have, too. Hubby is a software engineer. But when we let
security lapse, we got spyware that embedded itself in the 'start up'
sequence and could not be removed. Paralyzed the machine and we had to wipe
the hard drives and start over.

That happened to me also and I got lucky with digging it out of the machine.
My son finally got over here in about two weeks and the job was done, much
to his surprise.  LOLOL

Don't mean to be picky, but how does your knee being sore require one-handed
typing?  I'm trying to picture you typing with your knees. LOL

Oh, funny, funny - I had one leg propped up on a chair with an ice bag
on it and I can only get that chair so close to my computer (corner
desk setup).  The  knee is down right now, but will got watch Wheel of
Fortune and Jeopardy in the recliner and elevate it again.  It's not
as sore as it was when she was putting it in, frozen before or not
(she used some kind of spray that was cold).  She asked her assistant
for another syringe as she only had a 10cc one!  I asked "I don't want
to see that one, do I?"  and she said "Nope"!  If the shots don't work
long enough, it'll be a TKR for me.  Hopefully, the combination of the
shots and the Arthrotec (spelled it wrong before!) will do the trick.

That is the set up I use also.   I have used the services of the boys down
at Best Buy also and my youngest son got soooo mad at me for doing it.  He
wants to make any and all of the changes on the wife's and my computer.   I
told him that when something happens and I do not see him for a month,,,,,
someone else will have to do the work.   So it goes.

Wonder if Zonealarm would work. I don't read the
newsgroup on my pc which is where Zonealarm is loaded
[XP]. It was the one Larry used to recommend and I have
the paid version which I like alot. Once and awhile it
will not play well with Norton but it is Norton that
crashs and burns. It seems to work fine there but
again, not reading newsgroup. What are you using to
read the group? Also, are you running Service Pack 1 or
2 on Microsoft's XP?

I used to have zonealarm on my PC many moons ago. I was running Windoze
98se and it conflicted with it so I had to remove it. Now I'm a Mac
person and life is so calm.  No more blue screens of death, no more
'this program has performed an illegal operation', etc. Once you go Mac,
you'll never go back :)
