My heel pain

I saw my podiatrist this past tuesday.  My heel pain is really lousy.
It's either plantar fascitis or bursitis or both.  She suggested an
injection of cortisone, and I went into a cold sweat.  Oh God, those are
lousy.  She did my right heel/bottom of foot, and I was really cursing.
That is one excrutiating injection.  My foot was pretty sore for a day
and a half, but it's alot better now.

But, I still have my left heel.  She didn't do both, because she
couldn't totally lame me up, and there was no way I could have tolerated
it, I don't think.  She wants to do the heel in a week or so, and I
don't want to go back.  I just wanna cry at the thought of willfully
subjecting myself to that kind of misery.  It really is excrutiating.
I'll have to think about this.  Maybe if my heel is so bad, I'll just do
it.  But right now, no way.  :-(

I don't do pain very well...............

Hi Di   :)

I can certainly understand your stress and worry!  I never know which is
worse - the pain or the getting rid of it  lol!
I would suggest going to your next appointment and telling her your
concerns - she may be the one recommending the shots but *you* are the one
who gets to decide if the results are worth it.  How is your right foot
doing now - better, the same or worse?  Are you more mobile, sleeping
better, smiling more?  These are all factors in deciding on the next shot.
Also, does she have a plan to help sort out the underlying problem?
Maybe some ice and local anesthetic might help, or even some meds to reduce
the overall inflammation before getting the shot to make it easier.

Let us know how it goes  :)

((((((((((Di))))))))))))  It stinks when the only way you can get better is
to go through a whole lot more pain.

Di,

it is a shame you have to have such a painful shot to take care of a painful
problem. I wish you well with your heels and hope you don't have to get more
of those shots.

Love and hugs to all
Good thoughts coming your way too.

Thanks all, but not too much to report.  When the podiatrist injected my
heel, I told her that I thought it was the wrong place.  She said, no,
it's just referred pain.  OK.  She injected.  It sucked boulders.  I
recovered.  But it took two days.  Holy sh.t, was I gimping around.

But, guess what........... my heel still hurts.  She missed it!!!!
Waaaaaaaaaa.............  No way I'm going back for my left heel.  And,
no way I'm going to even think that she should try again on my right
heel.  That is one of the most painful injections I've ever had.
Downright awful.  And, really disappointing this time, though it did
work last time I had it, about a year ago.

I'm just living with the heel pain right now.  It's tolerable, but I'm
thinking of maybe discussing it with my RD at greater length next time I
see him.  I haven't talked much about it, because I guess I figured that
the podiatrist knows feet best.  It ain't necessarily so.  <g>

Dear Di,

I'm late reading this message but wanted to say...I hope that you have
had relief by now.  I went thru heel pain in 2001.  My podiatrist used
compressed air to deaden the heel before injection and that seemed to
help the shot but it still did nothing in the long run.  I had a heel
spur.  I went through therapy and finally had my tendon clipped and
thus lengthened to relieve the pain.

Good luck,

Di,
I, too, had heel spurs on one heel.  My orthopedic doctor injected it
- extremely painful as you say.  Around that time, I had an
arthroscopy of the left knee.  They sent me to physical therapy for
two weeks.  I did quite well and only needed one week.  But, what I
meant to write was the lead therapist said to put the arch support
under the sole of the shoe (I have SAS shoes with removable soles)
because I told him the arch support was hurting the outside and inside
of my heel.  I did as he suggested and in a couple of months or so, I
found I could walk around barefoot with no problems.  My heel didn't
hurt anymore.  I keep the arch supports in my shoes anyhow, because
they said I had drooping arches.  Just a suggestion.  If your shoes
don't come with removable soles, try adding one on top of the arch
support.  Good luck.  By the way, my doctor won't inject heels any
more because he says there is information out that it is too easy to
damage a nerve.  Good luck and hope you do better.  It is a very
painful thing to have.  Each step feels like there is a stone under
your heel.
