Hello everybody I have had RA for several years. I have been on Vioxx,
Bextra, Mobic and MTX. The Mobic and MTX eventually caused a bleeding
ulcer. I lost two pints of Blood and had to have a transfusion.
I am now off of all arthritis meds, and will be until I heal. MD that put me
on the Mobic after the Bextra problem is certain that the Mobic and the MTX
(been on this for three years) was the cause of the bleeding ulcer which is
about the size of a quarter.
Question is what new or old arthritis med that may help me? Since being off
the Mobic I am having the old flare-ups in shoulders, hands, knees and
ankles.
Any suggestions will be appreciated as I have found that members in this
group are as educated on arthritis as any RA or MD doctor.
Thank You
Elcid

What has your RD/MD said? There are several options that are
injectable, thereby bypassing the stomach:
MTX comes that way, when it can be found, my pharmacy has it, both
sterile and non sterile versions, but others are having problems
getting it. Humira, Enbrel, Remicade, and Rituxan are all injected or
infused (in hospital or doctor's office settings), so they would bypass
the tummy and might work for you. Unfortunately, none of them are
inexpensive.
As to which NSAIDS, um... Don't know of any that don't have possible
problems with the stomach, aside from Tylenol, which I'm allergic to.
However, I have noticed that when I get the inflammation under control
with a DMARD I am not nearly so much in need of the NSAID.
Hope you find something that works and does you no tummy harm.

Hi!
I'm on Plaquenil and an NSAID.
Because of my history with reflux and already hurting my stomach
w/ibuprofen, my RD had me consult my Primary care doc so I could tolerate an
NSAID better. That doc came up with a combo of Axid and Propulcid to protect
the stomach. And we can increase dosages if this hadn't worked. Thankfully,
its working really well as long as I avoid the usual triggers - vinegars,
peppers, onion, coffee, horseradish, etc.
Wishing you luck in finding a solution which works for you.

Hi Elcid,,,, It kind of depends on the condition of the joint or joint
structure of the place you hurt. In other words if you are bone on
bone,,,, the only thing that can help you is to have the joint replaced.
If you are not bone on bone I suggest a stronger DMARD or the addition of
another DMARD to the one you take. IMO its the DMARD that keeps you from
being in pain and a NSAID just keeps the swelling down. I do not see how
you can take a NSAID with a quarter sized ulcer but you and your doctors
might work something out.
Good luck with it.

Ps let us know if you do,,,, it might help someone else.
