Strange leg symptom

Ever since I had my blood clot in my leg in 2000 I have had to wear a
compression stocking on that leg to keep the swelling down. Yesterday I
noticed a wet area on the side of my leg about 4 x 2 inches in size. I
tried to think of how it got wet and just went about my day. But then
it happened again today. And now tonite my leg in that area is
"weeping" -- I don't know how else to explain it. Any ideas on what
this is or how serious it is? No pain or cuts. Mild bruising but it's
more like mottling on my skin that I get from the coumadin. It's kinda
freaking me out/

Thanks!  Diane W

diane, my sister had this happen recently. she has lymphedema in her
foot from an accident when she was a teen. (i also have it in my leg,
but haven't had this "weeping" . . yet). she said one day she looked
down and noticed her compression stocking was wet and her doctor told
her it was the lymph coming out through a small cut. she never had to
do anything about it and it eventually stopped, but i would definitely
contact your doctor to discuss.

Thanks Diane . I did a google search on it and came up with the word
lymphedema. There is a tiny scab in the middle of a bruise where I
apparently bumped myself but I was totally unaware of it. So that must
be where it's leaking from. Strange at that!  Thanks again.  Diane

You need to have this assessed, it could be the beginning of a pressure ulcer,
it could be uneven pressure from the compression stocking. Whatever it is, it
needs a medical assessment. The imagination is a wonderful thing. Having a
professional look at it could decrease the amount of 'freaking out' you have to
do. :-)

Your are so right Joan. I have to make an appt with wound care for a
cut that used to be a simple abrasion on my other leg. So I'll let him
look at that as well. Yesterday I stayed off my feet all day and it
didn't happen. Today there is a wet spot on my stocking again after a
few hours shopping. DianeW

Hi Diane

Just noticed your note regarding lymphedema and a weeping sore.

The fluid you are talking about is called lymphorrhea.  It is a very
protein rich liquid and can cause serious skin damage to surrounding
areas if not treated.

It can also be a door of entry for bacteria that can lead to infection.

Here are a couple pages that might help:

Lymphorrhea

Wound Information

Please don't delay in having that spot treated.

My best to you

thanks Pat. As soon as our thunderstorm is over, I will look up those
sites. As I mentioned to Joan, I'm seeing wound care next week, as soon
as I can get an appt when I call on Mon. Is that soon enough -- I don't
need the ER do I?  Thanks again. DianeW

PS - The spot is less today than a few days ago.

I agree with most of what you have said but have a problem with a couple of the
supplies in your first aid kit. I would get rid of the alcohol and hydrogen
peroxide. Both of these agents deter wound healing. Cleansing with normal saline
or even plain water is preferable. I'm speaking as a wound care nurse here. Both
alcohol and peroxide are treatments from the past.

By the way, what kind of dr would I see for this?  Is the wound care dr
ok? Or is there someone else I should be seeing? I've never actually
been diagnosed with lymphedema formally but it has been a problem
lately. DianeW

woman, i sure wish you were so tiny you could ride on my shoulder, every
once in awhile!   there are times i'd like you to repeat these exact words,
when i need a nudge towards action.<smile>  cuz sometimes the imagination is
not such a wonderful thing, especially when coupled with inaction.

I'm seeing the wound care dr this afternoon. The swelling in my legs is
a lot less without being on Bextra although I'm in more pain on Mobic
than I was on Bextra. Mixed bag that is.  Diane W
