I thought it would be good to have a check in and itinerary check.
Why don't you e-mail me your arrival time and interests and I will see
what I can put together.  Also if you need a wheel chair let me know
so I can check how places can accommodate us.  Some suggestions are:
wine tours (30 -45 minute drive away), St Helens (I would guess about
1 hr drive), Spruce goose museum  (45 minutes or and near wineries),
Gardens - chinese, japanese, portland zoo, OmSI (great for kids
wonderful science center), Planetarium, Omnimax this is the giant
Imax cinema screen.  They just started showing Mysteries of the Nile
everyone who has seen it says it is awesome, it is a river trip down
the Nile.  You can guess why I want to see it!   If anyone is
interested let me know otherwise I might try to catch it at 1 pm on
Friday.  NW gardens are amazing, there is a reason we produce so much
nursery stock!
Also it is fun to visit Bonneville dam about 30 minutes up the
columbia gorge very scenic drive.  The fish ladder has glass so it is
very fun to watch the fish jump the ladder. They have had some pesky
sea lions a the base of the fish ladders this year.  Also you can see
giant sturgeon the pool that has glass so you can see them under
water.  Great place to learn about salmon.

SO let me know

Note that Northern end of Willamette valley is known for Pinot grapes,
we make some world class Pinots.  If you saw Sideways you understand
about Pinots.

I should have posted this.  If you go to Bonneville you will see
Multnomah falls which is 620 feet high.  This site give you an idea of
the scenery.  There are also some scenic viewpoints along the way.

I have forward this along to John. I am partial to any
zoo but the wine tour also interests me as well as gardens.

gee, i wanna do it all.<smile>  but, i'm easy (prolly why butch married
me.LOL), so i'll go along with whatever the majority wants to do.

once i have the confidence back that i can drive longer distances, maybe we
can do some of the rest of these things later.

i had intended to get down there to see you and kelly before the gimpfest,
however, hand issues have been making driving abit challenging locally.  but
i don't care if it takes me 8 hours (for a 3 hour drive), stopping at every
rest stop on the way down, i am going get there by driving down for the
gimpfest.

This will be SO cool.  I hope I get to see a good number of you.  Won't be
joining you for the activities, as I'll be working at the track from 5 am to
5 pm (more or less) on Fri, Sat and Sun.  Leaving Wednesday morning from
home and arriving Thursday noonish.

Great we are looking forward to meeting you.  I sure hope this weather
clears out.  We have had this crappy marine flow for a week now.  It
isn't terrible, but it would be nice to see the sun and have a few
warm days.  Hopefully it will change over to our usual summer sunshine
soon. Looks like coastal crud until next Wednesday and probably
longer.  -- MZ

gee, and I recently had to switch from our winter comforter (the new one with
still good padding) to the summer comforter (the 24 year old one that's gone
fairly flat).  I'm wondering if our really lightweight spread will be used at
all up here - maybe in August...........

It's amazing how quickly I've come to see 75 as warm!

I want warm weather for our raft trip!  right Duckie?  Since last
weekend it has been coastal crud.  Finally it cleared out yesterday
afternoon and today the sun finally burned off the marine layer, but
it is supposed to rain this weekend.  Yuck and all the graduations are
happening!

Mary and I will be there for sure - Thursday or Friday,
depending on how much time we spend in the
Redwoods and along U.S. 101 in Oregon before
turning East to Portland.

We have not made arrangements except for the period
July 22-25 during the National Square Dance Convention.
That will be directly across the street from the Portland
Convention Center - walking distance.  Give the car a
rest after driving for 16 days (with 3 days in San Jose).

Our plane tickets have just been purchased. We fly here
to LV and from there to Portland. John says you can't
get there from here. lol  We leave LV at 11:40am so not
sure how long that flight will be but looks like we
will be there by early afternoon.

It should only take a couple of hours. Yay!!

Rachel has a dental appt. at 11 a.m. and then we plan to come up and visit
Friday afternoon and return home for the night. Saturday we'll come up with
my friend Lisa and stay all day and all night. I can't wait!

Mary and I will be on the tail end of the drive from California.
If we get checked in early and if we get the car unloaded,
we should be able to give rides from the airport.

All of those "if's" depend on the earliest check-in time
allowed.

Okay, that's fine by me, but I'll probably cry, too. Yeah, I'm a geek like
that. This is like meeting celebrities to me.

I will be bringing my own gimp groupie, too...my friend Lisa is going to

this is sooooo weird.  you feel the way i do, so i must be geeky, too.  i
feel like i'm meeting all my heroes.   i'm somewhat restrained about crying
in public (or i used to be), but boy, can i float furnishings not tied down
inside my house, when nobody else is here.LOL   sometimes though, i have
leaky eyes in public---of course, that's not my emotions.  that's more like
i have worn out o-rings inside my shut-off valves.  guess, i need to find a
plumber to fix that.ô¿ô

i can't wait.  not packed yet, but i have washington wine already out in my
car, ready to travel.<giggling>

I'm coming up Friday with just Rachel, to get the weepy greetings out of the
way before Lisa comes up. She knows what I'm like, but she's a good friend
and I don't want to ignore her too much in the thrill of seeing everyone for
the first time. Make sense?

I haven't heard from Miss M in ages, but was hoping you had. Maybe there'll
be surprise appearance...that would be awesome.

I may be picking up Janet for the afternoon so she doesn't have to take a
cab to the hotel. We're working out the details.

I wonder if we could get a roll call of who will actually be at the hotel
early Friday afternoon. I won't have a reservation for Friday night, so will
need an 'in' to be there.

We have a Salem appt. at 11 a.m., but then plan to head up for the
afternoon. I could be at the hotel as early as 1 p.m., but won't bother if
nobody's going to be home.

I am getting excited!  I just hope the weather improves.  Sounds like
late next week it is supposed to be better weather.  I will be calling
the zoo and gardens plus snooping around the winery hours.  If you
want we can do a wine tasting in Party central room.  We can purchase
some local bottles and do a tasting in our room, that way we don't
have to worry about driving, and Joe you can take the max from
convention center to our hotel.  It is the easiest and cheapest way.
I will volunteer to take some salmon, cheese and crackers and fruits
along.  So let me know if you have other preferences.  I will probably
arrive early and catch the Imax show on the Nile.

They have a show at 1 pm that would get us out about mid afternoon. I
think it is about 3 hours to Seattle.  It would be fun, everyone has
been raving about the film on the nile.  The blue nile has some great
whitewater, and some great shots of rafting.   Let me know if you can
make it.

I'm going to bring at least one bottle of Willamette Valley Vineyards
wine...a very nice, whole-cluster pinot noir and maybe a riesling.

I also have a few bars of Lindt dark chocolate to share. If you can think of
anything else, let me know and I'll try and rustle it up.

Tillamook cheese may be getting expensive soon if the strike goes on, stock
up now.:o)

there's supposed to be 4 costco stores in the area of the hotel--

would be great for party trays and/or cheeses and/or their killer gourmet
breads to go with the wine.<smile>   i've got a membership for costco.  also
have one for sam's club, but i haven't looked up locations near the hotel
yet.  could do that too, if anybody wants me to.

i'm going to be swinging by see's candies before i leave.  my fav is dark

Perhaps it's just as well I can't make it!  I just recently made myself get
serious about the weight I've gained since we moved to the land of constant
potlucks and benefit dinners with wonderful desserts.  I don't know that I
could stand having all this temptation around!

I went winery hopping with a friend this weekend.  What fun and I
bought a bunch of wines.  Pinot gris, syrah, pinot noir, chardonnay
I will take a couple of bottles along and keep some for the river
trip. I was visiting a friend in the Columbia gorge, excellent wines
both Washington and Oregon.  Perhaps Kate can take one of her
Washington favorites. I was really impressed with some of the small
wineries in the Gorge, really good wines. For reds I really like
syrah, better than the Pi nots, they also had some good Washington
Cabs. Syrah and chocolate now that is heaven.  My friend volunteers in
a wine store so she really knows her wines.  It would be fun to get a
variety. Costco sounds great I have a card.  I will try and pay a
visit to one of the local ones before I check in.  -- MZ

heheheh.  picked up eleven bottles from 9 different washington wineries--a
couple of bottles of two weirdies (as far as type goes), just for fun.  a
bottle each of most of the kindss you and duckie listed.  couldn't find a
washington pinot gris.  oh well.  i'll bring them all and we can pick and
choose from them or make dead soldiers of them all.LOL  bring a couple of
quarters, you guys---for "solid bone" wishes.  drat!---chocolate!  still
gotta get that!  maybe i can schooch off and get it, after my laminate
floors are laid tomorrow morning.

finally got my hot tub cleaned and running again, cuz i have company coming
(for two weeks) right after i leave for portland.  they're  family, so they
can let themselves in and get comfy, until i get back.  heck, they'll do
fine without me.
