Tomorrow at 1:30 I have an appointment for them to activate and begin
programming my cochlear implant.  The wait has been ...

I try not to think about it so I don't get anxious, but that also means I
can't concentrate on anything else either.  I have no patience.  Never did.
Never will.  But someone up there keeps trying to teach me.

Anyways, all good thoughts, wishes and prayers will be greatly appreciated.
Wednesday May 25, 2005. 1:30 pm Pacific Daylight time.

They keep telling me not to expect too much, especially right away, so I try
not to think about that either.

Jo, I know it must be so hard to be patient, but hope you can.  Pray that it
won't take too long for things to work out really well for you, and you will
be able to hear all the things you've been missing ---especially music.

It been a very long day.  They activated the cochlear implant today, and yes
it works.  I can hear things I haven't heard in years.  That's the good
news.

I can also hear feedback like tones that just about drown out everything
else.  We spent two and a half hours today programming it, and still have a
ways to go.  But the audiologist is hopeful that I will eventually have a
very good result.

This is an ear that has heard absolutely nothing in several years, so I
guess I need to give it some time to adjust.

That's great news, Jo!  I'm sure once they get it all programmed, you
will be delighted with all the sounds around you :-)))

There's a blog I've been following kept by someone who's a few months
ahead of you on the implant (she's a friend of a friend). She's still
adjusting but having great success. It's at

Give yourself some time Jo.  When you had hearing, your brain was in the
habit of screening out extraneous noise.  But since losing your hearing in
that ear, it's gotten out of the habit.  It will just take some time to
reprogram your brain a little, but it will happen.  There are auditory
training techniques that can be used to help the process along, but mostly,
it just takes time.

Going from silence in that ear to sounds has to be hard
but in the end I pray that it will be grand.
Rest and awake to the birds. :)

It must be frustrating to have to wait out all the adjusting and programming,
but it all sounds most promising.  Got my fingers crossed and my prayers said
that the settling in moves along quickly.

I have seen how that implant works and it is amazing. I do not blame you for
being so distracted. This is a big thing and I know everything is going to
work out for you. You are probably very anxious.. I mean you probably ask
yourself what will the first sound be like? or will it work.
I am a little late with this you probably already have been back at home.
Anyways best wishes for you!
