CHICAGO (Reuters) - Older arthritis treatments taken in combination with
a heartburn drug may be easier on the stomach than medications such as
the recalled painkiller Vioxx that were touted as causing fewer stomach
problems, researchers in a drugmaker-sponsored review said on Wednesday.

Thanks JD for posting this article, very interesting. Wish I knew more about
the side effects of prescription arthritis meds before the Doctor put me on
them. I first started on Bextra then Naproxen, ended up with a bleeding
ulcer, and spent three days in the hospital. Had to even get a blood
transfusion. Im on daily Protonix and an Iron sup. now. I only take tylenol
and Oxycodone 5/325 when needed. I was wondering, if i had been on Protonix
prior to taking the NSAIDS would i have prevented the ulcer?

No wonder everyone went ballistic Tuesday. Guess it's a little more serious
than I thought, although I still think it's just an ulcer that needs
treatment.

I hope it is! Heck, if nothing else, it'll be nice if the upper GI is all
the testing you have to go through!

I haven't read the article, but I'm not surprised about this information. I
have found that the *older* antidepressants, for instance, are cheaper by
far and more effective - at least for me. Nanny

The Reuters article doesn't indicate that this is a thorough or very
meaningful study.
They obviously need to do a proper examination of the more serious side
effects of NSAIDs versus the Cox 2s to get a realistic and
scientifically valid set of results.

Because I have a heart murmur and cardiomyopathy, my RD says that he's
going to keep me on the older NSAID's (COX 1's) with Nexium to help
prevent gastro- side effects. He feels that this is a much safer course
of action.
Currently I'm on Lodine, 600 mg, twice a day, and Sulfazine EC 500 mg,
three times a day, Ultram 50 mg, two to three times a day (as needed for
pain) with Nexium 40 mg, once a day, to protect the stomach.
It may seem a bit much (esp. with my other meds) but it seems to be
working. I haven't had a really good day in quite a while, but I haven't
had too many bad ones either.
Duckie - 22 May 2005 16:20 GMT
Hey Norm -- not too many bad ones is what it is all
about. We could all hope for no bad ones but what we
all do not want or need is all bad ones. I long for the
same feeling of pain relief that 40mg of pred gives me
without taking pred. But I am doing all right and with
pain meds to help, I have not too many bad ones either.
