DeeTee and Bob Taggart - 17 May 2005 23:18 GMT
I went to my RD appointment this morning as planned.  He was upset that no
one had called me in November to tell me my Hepatitis B test was positive or
to do follow-up.  The health nurse ordered blood tests last month and tacked
on a hepatitis scan at my request (Bob is positive).  So that one came out
positive, too.  THEN he says my white blood cell count is unacceptably low
(25).  I went from 31 in November to 25 last month.  So off I toddle to the
lab for a STAT blood test and return to him.  He's unhappy....it's still
down to 25.  So he asks some questions.  I have had black stools for about
six weeks now - at first only once or twice a week, now nearly all the time.
(I had told myself that if it didn't clear up before the end of May I would
make an appointment with my PCP.)  Once or twice I have had blood dripping
into the toilet with no apparent reason. (Again, I was gonna go get it
checked - I thought it was a hemorroid.)  I have had extreme fatigue, even
Bob has remarked on it several times.  AND I have had a pain in my right
side below my rib cage.  Sooooooo - instead of doing any RD follow-up, I am
seeing a gastroenterologist at 10 AM tomorrow.  Seems this is something that
needs immediate attention.  When he gives me a plan or diagnosis or
whatever, I am then to go up to rheumatology and have the RD paged.  He
wants to know right away.  Sigh.

With the addition of the Hepatitis B and all this other stuff, I am going to
apply for SSDI.  Should I apply here in Maryland or wait until I get to
Ohio?  Either way, my working days are over as far as I'm concerned.  Too
many doctor appointments to bother getting a job.

Dee,
What are we going to do with you....
I suggest your local Social Security office and ask them that question...The
quicker you file the better...So it might be a good idea to go ahead and
file...I am not sure how it works if you move...might as well just call and
find out...
Praying that everything is okay...

Sorry to hear all your medical problems, DeeTee. I can empathize,
believe me. If I were you, since it takes them so long to process
applications, you should apply now. Once you move you just call the 800
number and give them your new address. That way at least your
application will be started and if you need to get things from your
doctors there, you can get copies now while you are still there.

WoW! That is a pretty major  omission. I can understand why he was
upset.
I will be praying and thinking of you that this works out to be
something that does not cause any problems but just means you have
been exposed.

Grrr anyways

Take care. I don't know anything about the ssdi stufff, but good luck
with it all.

What were your other blood counts like? Sounds like you have an
intestinal or stomach bleed and the fatigue is coming from low hb. Even
I am not happy with a WCC of 2.5.

I'm going to die rather sooner than I'd like. I tried to protect my
neighbours from crime, and became the victim of it. Complications in
hospital following this resulted in a serious illness. I now need a bone

transplant, too. Please volunteer to be a marrow donor:

I know that they were concerned when I dropped below 40 sometime last
summer.  In November, it was 31 and then last month and yesterday 25.

I may have voiced this if you raised this topic before, but I really
think you should see a haematologist if the gastroenterologist turns up
nothing significant. Keep an eye on you haemaglobin (hb) levels as well
as platelets. I don't recall if you're on any of the biologics, but
there are a host of other drugs that can cause marrow suppression as
well, and this should be evaluated.

OK - I'll keep that tucked in the back of my mind.  I am hoping it's
something as simple as too many NSAIDS (over 21 years now) or a stuck gall
stone or something like that.  I am so tired of this stupid body.

<exhaling whole lot of air> w0w!  i'm more than a bit annoyed that
apparently they employ no specific approach to just who should be calling
patients about potentially serious conditions.  what a total bummer!
(((((((((((((((((((((((deetee and bob))))))))))))))))))))))))

i guess now you know why you've been tired, what with all that blood loss in
your stool and all.  sigh . . . i wish it wasn't happening.  it makes me sad
that you are having to go through all this, sweetie.

go ahead and apply for ssdi now, deetee.  just keep copies of everything you
submit and everything your doctor submits to your social security caseworker
about your case.  they can always have your case file transferred by fax.
but do keep copies, just in case something gets lost from the file or suring
a physical transfer (if they decide to go snail mail with your file).

keeping you snuggly tucked, in my heart and prayers, where you've always
been.  wrapping you in love and wanting the best for you.

My WBC is up from 4.11 to 5.10. We must have some sort
of different measurement chart. And yes -- it is low
with the range being 4.10 - 10.90. So you sure that
isn't 2.5?
Got no answer for you on SSDI but just want you to know

It may well be.  The Air Force does everything differently so they may be
using a power higher.  So that's why they were worried at 40 (4.0).  I guess
25 (2.5) would be something to be concerned about.

Thanks, Duckie!

I was quoting WBC targets... Still can't figure out
which are yours as RBC is something like 4-5  But there
is something called Hematocrit that is 36-50 which
would make 25 too low. And a platelet count 150-400 and
a slew of others which I don't understand and have not
needed the info on before. Doctor still runs them so he
must need the info. lol You really ought to ask for a
print out of your labs. Would the Air Force give them
to you. As an individual consummer, I have bought and
paid for my tests and as a result are intitled to have
my own copy but not sure that would hold for the
military. I still would ask.

I say start the application process now, while you are near to the
doctors/clinics that have been treating you for some time.  One of the
factors keeping me from applying is the doctor merry-go-round I've been on
the past 5 eyars.  No continuity.

I'm glad you RD is sending you to a GI guy right away.  neither Hep B nor
intestinal bleeding are things to fool around with.  Sorry to hear you have
it, but hopefully they can get you doing better quickly and the important
thing is to get it treated.

Yes, I printed out the list of the documents I will need yesterday and, when
I have accumulated all of them, I will apply.  Gotta get rolling on this
one.
