Abatacept study

It looks like I will be starting the Abatacept study in a month or so.
Had my regular RD appointment this morning and before he even examined
me we talked about the study. Then he did my joint check and was
surprised at how boggy and swollen they were. Gave me a big old shot of
cortisone in the butt to help me get over this flare.

He said they should be set up and ready for the study in about a month
and they'll give me a call then. It looks like I am a perfect guinea
pig! I'm a little nervous about giving up my kineret, but it doesn't
seem to be doing the job as well as it used to. It's time to try
something new so I guess the study came at a good time.

The good news is that there is no drug washout reqired for the study.
So I can stay on kineret right up until I start the new drug.

I'll keep everyone posted as to when I start.

KJ,
Don't be afraid KJ, the infusions are very smooth and gently, no allergic
reactions, painless...and only 30 minutes.
After three infusions you can feel the positive effect on your RA unless you
have only sugar water in your bag (placebo).
Good luck with the Abatacept (=CTLA4-IG)

Good luck with it. I had asked about that one and my RD
had me try Rituxan first.
Here is hoping it kicks in quickly and takes over
control without much trouble.
How is it administered - infusion I think. How long and
what is the repeat dose regime.

It's a short infusion, about a half hour. I think it's given on day 1,
15, 29 and every 28 days after that. Most common side effects are
headache and nasopharangitis. From what I've read it's very effective
in those who have failed the TNF drugs. We'll see!

And what is nasopharangitis? Sounds like something to
do with the nose?

Pharyngitis, maybe? The pharynx is the upper throat. Sounds like the
side effect is that it might give you a sore throat!

Inflammation of the nasopharynx.  <g>

nasopharynx:  The part of the pharynx situated above the
soft palate (postnasal space)

pharynx:  The passageway for air from the nasal cavity to
the karynx and for food from the mouth to the esophagus.

And there are 4 pages of diseases associated with it.  <g>
