Dose #4 Rituxan

Duckie - 17 May 2005 00:12 GMT
It has been one long day. The usual dose time turned
from 5-6 to 10. Had a reaction about half way in just
after they did a bump increase to 2.10 from 1.68  not
sure what that means on the pump but guessing it is the
rate the dose is metered. Anyway, began to taste
metallic and then the tongue began to swell. Thought I
might be imagining it but it didn't get better so
called over the nurse. She said when I called her name
and she turned around, I looked terrified. She reached
out and pulled the infusion meter plug loose. The
tongue stopped swelling and then the throat began to
close which quickly stopped but I lost my voice for
about 5 minutes during all of this. After the throat
stopped trying to close, the inside of my throat was
really ticklish and raw. After 15 minutes this was 85%
gone. My doctor came down to check on me, made a few
phone calls, decided to give me IV Benedryl and
hydrocortizone and then restart me at a lower dosing
rate. That IV Benedryl burns but they put it in slowly
and use a hot pack while they do it. I asked why they
though the hot pack would help -- didn't get a good
answer to that one. lol  So got my last dose in and now
I wait.
Last week, by Wednesday, I was having such a rebound
from this that I finally got drunk to deal with the
pain. My Ultram didn't touch it but that concoction of
JD, triple sec and rum worked really well. :)
I called the RD to find out if this was a normal thing
and was told that it could be. It might take 3-4 months
to work for me And would I please try and take the next
dose. So I did and now have it in me. I also have a new
pain pill in the house for this Wednesday. The molten
lava in all my joints was a bit much last week.
I guess I am just special as the lady who started with
me and taking the same dose and schedule was flying
after dose 2. Her fatigue of 10 lifted 5 days after
dose 2 and 6 days after all pain except existing pain
in her knees is gone. So after her dose three, she said
she was running errands for neighbors while I was
writhing in pain.
After dose three the ability to taste has left me all
but tart and sour. Last Wednesday, I started  getting
mouth sores but they disappeared as quickly as they
appeared. I have gained 5 pounds on this so far as
carbs are about the only thing that appeals to me. And
I have stopped eating 3 meals a day. Just not hungry.
Didn't put two and two together until yesterday.
I sure hope this is going to be worth it in the long
run. I had so wanted it to work right away for me.

((((((((((((duckie)))))))))))))  damn, that sounded scary!  i'm soooo glad
that's overwith!--- right along with you, i'm sure.  you are one gutsy lady!
what a warrior spirit you have!!!  (i'd have probably freaked and headed for
the hills!)  fingers crossed that rituxan kicks in soon for you, but i have
a feeling i won't have to keep them crossed for long.  i'll just coax it
along a little bit---come onnn baby, do your good stuff for our duckie!!!

they generally use hot packs on cold wintery days or when a patient's skin
is cold to the touch, when an i.v. has to be put in or for drawing blood,
especially in difficult cases (they also use warm blankets for that, too).
so, chances are they used the hot pack to make sure your vein was not
constricted/constricting possibly as a reaction to the benedryl.   and/or
maybe so the low dose med would flow easier and faster for you in that way?
it would seem counterintuitive to use heat to treat the burning from
benedryl to make it feel better.

ok.  so, with that process behind you now, it sounds like you should totally
feel ready to party hardy come the gimpfest!<grin>  i can't wait to see you,
especially feeling great!

I used to always be wrapped in hot towels to plump up
the veins but I have less trouble since i lost weight.
I would be willing to be it was so the vein was larger
to handle it. They removed it once the benedryl was in.
This stuff, Rituxan, and Remicade is always served
chilled - not stirred.
From your mouth to God's ears. Having my left knee
injected just in case the 13th
Guessing who didn't make it to Pilates tonight. I
usually can warrior through most anything but 50 mg was
just too much in the system for even me to fight against.

Kiddo, 50 mg is enough to put me to sleep for hours!!!! And I used to pop
other sedating antihistamines and decongestants like they were m&m's! I seem
to recall being told Benadryl was first created as a sedative. It was only
after it was in use that they discovered it was an antihistamine.

Go sleep it off sweetie. And take extra fluids tomorrow. Antihistamines
really dry one out; and being dry will prolong the fatigue.

That is a good suggestion about the water. Maybe I will
treat this stuff just like I was taking MTX and drink
all the water I can for a week.

Actaully, I think it was the other way around, LOL!  Whenever I emntion how
benadryl wipes me out and I can't take it, my mom tells me how happy they
were to get it when she was in high school as it was the first anti-histamine
available.  I tell her I still can't take it - it leaves me as fogged in as
the allergies do.

That and some anti-histamine that begins with an A are the most common
sleeping pills in hospitals.  I always wondered about giving those patients
the antihistamine side effects.

h0ly c0w.  50mg?!  bet they gave you that much cuz your tongue swelled and
your throat started to close up.  did they let you drive yourself home?    i
think its good you stayed home from pilates---i can just see you falling
asleep on the mat or the ball.  with that much benedryl in you, there's no
avoiding getting the rest you need.  how are you feeling today, sweetie?

They were to give 50 to begin but I had only been
taking 25 for all the rest due to the sleeping issue.
So they only added another 25 to that...
zzzzzzz
Slept well last night - gee wonder why. I feel pretty
good today but that was the same as last week and then
Wednesday the wheels fell off my cart.
So here's to not having that happen tomorrow.

Yikes I had heard Rituxan can have a nasty reaction.  Sorry this is
not working faster.   The reaction sounds really scary, I am so glad
Remicade continues to be my miracle, my  even response seems to
surprise my RD. Praying you find some relief soon.  You need to be
healthy for Oregon.  Now if this blasted rain would stop by June!  We
are receiving winter rain now, go figure what a really weird year, and
the weather bureau keeps blowing the long range forecast. -- MZ

rofl  John said he looked at the river gauge when you
said you were canceling your May trip and the #11 is
still in my mind. It scared him. He said if the rate
didn't drop to a certain level, he might just be
renting a raft to row instead of a canoe.

duckie!!!!!!!!!!!! i echo what kate said. you are one brave duck. my
tongue starts swelling, and i'm outta there.

i would love to have 50 mg of benedryl those nights i just can't sleep.
the 12.5 i get with my remicade knocks me out. i can't even imagine how
you feel on 50.

youve been through so much. this better work for you or i'm going to be
mad.

Duckie - 17 May 2005 23:00 GMT
You and me both Diane. Today I feel like I did last
week at the same time, more energy and little pain. If
things go the way they did last week, I will be chewing
pain pills tomorrow. Wonder if the hydrocortisone they
also gave me after the reaction will help that? And
then there is the water I am pushing.

Aaah me,,,,, dam, dam ,dam......  what we go through when  ALL we want is
control, a little control.   I can say that you are my hero Duckie and I
wish I could hold your hand and get a cool glass of water or the best
Marguerite(and one for myself).    Why one for me you say,,, its that email
for money and my youngest daughter in England when I can not cover what is
taking place for the wife and I over the next few years.  I could send  a
grand and then in a few weeks its would be an email about the great trip to
Germany to see this and that.   I just want to scream    but   I would not
trade it all for what you are going through.
love ya,,,,, in my prayers,,,,,   so it goes.

wrists gave out and had both of them in braces for awhile.   Getting doctors
degrees in England in English is not easy.   So it goes.

Oh, how frightening.  Sounds like they tok good care of you though.  I can
easily believe that 50 mg of benadryl have done you in.  I wouldn't have even
been able to type out the saga for a couple of days after that much!  Please
be gentle with yourself and rest and let this stuff battle it out with your
body.  I still can't believe all you've done in recent months.  I'm still
trying to recover from one day of spring cleaning.
