Hi Friends...
I'm sorry I haven't been around. Life's gotten in the way a little
more than I'd like lately. The past 6 months have been incredibly
difficult.
A lot of time's been spent dealing with the loss of Mom and
Tim...not just grief, but, the myriad life issues surrounding their
loss...such as cleaning out their home and getting it ready for sale.
Also, dealing with surrogate and probate court, along with banks, stock
brokers, tax accountant and attorney. Ugh! It's been daunting. Eileen
and I have dragged our feet as long as we could. Now, it's time to move
on. The house stuff is huge. It's been both emotionally and physically
grueling. Disassembling and 'throwing away' their lives is one of the
hardest things I've ever done.   Thankfully, we're almost done.
Hopefully, the house will be on the market within the next 2 weeks.
Maybe then, we can begin to heal.
Thankfully, the rest of the family's doing well. Kids all healthy
and wayyyyyy too active LOL. Jay (15 year old) is playing high school
and Babe Ruth ball this year. It takes up every spare second of our
time. Lots of fun, but, exhausting, too. In between, Allison had two
formal dances (prom was Friday) to attend. Those of you with girls will
know how much time and effort goes into making everything just perfect.
Yikes LOL! David finished his first year of college on the Dean's List,
both semesters YAY! He loves it and is doing better than he did in high
school. And, Jeffrey's finishing up elementary school and gearing up
for middle school next year. Can we say 'independence?' 'Nuff said LOL!
Jeff's diabetes has remained in great control since his big scare back
in November and I'm very grateful for that.
As for me, well, my RA's more out of control than it's ever been
before. The pain is overwhelming sometimes, despite generous pain
control from my RD. Eating and sleeping have become memories of the
past. I've had more disability and deformity in the past few months
than I've had in the past 3 years. We're thinking about Rituxin. But,
I've had no luck with any of the others, so, I'm hesitant to take the
huge financial hit it will entail. My co-pay is 20% if BC/BS even
approves it. I'm eagerly reading Duckie's saga and praying for good
results. That might be just the push I need to go forward with this
drug. There's got to be something out there that works for me, right? :
)
Which brings me to my question: Does anyone here take Salagen (sp?)?
I kept not taking the script for it from my RD the past few months, as
I didn't want to add another med. This past month, the dryness in my
mouth and throat are so bad, that I have a ton of raw sores trying to
make my life miserable. So, I filled the script last week and the
bottle sits next to me, unopened, ever since. I need to take it. But,
I'd love to hear if anyone has any personal experience with it. Any
side-effects? Any relief? I'm already using all the Biotene products,
along with a Benadryl/Maalox swish. I carry a water bottle everywhere.
Nothing's giving any relief. I'm so raw and sore that I can barely
speak. Eating's become a chore and I'm losing weight again. Normally,
that wouldn't be a problem LOL. But, I lost 60 lbs in the past few
months from plain old not eating and I've had some malnutrition
problems that I don't want to return. My hair is finally filling in
again and I'd like to keep it that way : )  Anyway, any shares on this
med would be greatly appreciated.
I've only been reading sporadically, so, I'm not up on what's going
on with everyone. But, I hope you know that I love you and pray for
each and every one of you every single day. You're never far from my
thoughts. And, you're always in my heart. Hoping like crazy that
everyone's doing great and that if there's anything important I need to
know that someone will give me a holler.

I did. I stopped when I went on remicade and things seemed to settle
down. It helped immensely. The only side effect that I experienced
occured once or twice when I lay down during the day. I was producing
so much saliva that it felt like I was drowning in it. I finally had
to get up and wait.

I tried it as I have sleep apnea (besides AS and OA) and have been unable
to use a CPAP due to sjogrens syndrome; my throat would get so dry that I
would wake up after an hour in pain (it felt like my throat was
cracking).

The salagen may me drool, but my throats stayed too dry, so I stopped it.

As far as side effects and interactions, it's like those commercials
where they say, "Your results may vary."

Your doctor or pharmacist may be able to tell you some POSSIBLE problems,
but you won't know until you try.

You could also try these sites for more information...

http://www.mayoclinic.com/findinformation/druginformation/index.cfm

http://www.rxlist.com/

http://www.merck.com/mmhe/sec02.html

Specific medications may not be listed on some sites, but these may help.
Some of the sites have drug interaction listings as well as info on the
drug itself.

I hope that this helps

don't know anything about salagen.  so, i can't help much.

w0w.  you really have been into and doing far more than i even suspected
you were up to!  major busy!  (i think i just gave you a military
promotion<smile>)  i have no idea how you can and did juggle that much,
patty, and keep your sanity to boot.  you're pretty darn amazing!

but, this losing 60 pounds in a few months, especially the way you did it,
is going to make me worry about you, bigtime, if you don't quit that.  so,
quit that, ok?  time to be nice to patty and take care of patty, ok?

listen carefully to the great mesmorosa's voice---just get comfortable,
relax.  her voice is very mellow and very soothing.  follow the swinging
pendulum.  with your eyes (not with your head, patty).  notice how it spins
so silently.  sooo quietly.  now, watch the lovely flashes of color it
emits.  such a gentle spinning rhythm.  unhurried. very restful.  and the
colors are soooo soft and sooo dreamy.  you are feeling very relaxed.  very
relaxed.  it's ok, you may close your eyelids if you want to.  you feel a
little like you are floating.  ohhhh, that's nice, isn't it.

the great mesmorosa has a loving message for you, patty.  you are very loved
and cared about by many people, family and friends.  and you love yourself
and want to take good care of you.   you are very hungry, now, very hungry.
but you are only hungry for lovely healthful foods.  there's such an
abundance of healthful foods that make you feel as if you are dining among
friends and having such a good time eating all these lovely nourishing
things.  ohhh, these foods have such vivid flavors and such beautiful
colors.  ouuu . . . and the textures; feel them on your tongue and on your
palate.   and ohhh, what heavenly aromas.  go ahead, inhale them.   mmmm . .
. such a feast for your senses.   each bite makes you feel like you are
doing such wonderful things for yourself, giving yourself health and
vitality.  you can feel that health and vitality radiating through you and
from you, making your complexion glow and your hair feel thick and glossy;
making your eyes bright and your body feel light and bouyant.  you feel
better than you've ever felt before.  feel all that; hold it; own it.  it's
yours to have.  all you have to do is remember how lovely it is to eat
things that are so good for you.  linger for a minute.  let all these
wonderful things about eating surround you and embrace you.  now, embrace
them.

when the great mesmorosa snaps her fingers, you will feel soooo well
rested, like you just returned from the best vacation you've ever had.  you
will remember the sensations of all these wonderful things about eating.
you will no longer feel that eating is a chore, because it feels more like a
celebration to you and a celebration of you and it always will.  take a deep
breath now and breathe these sensations into you.  exhale all the negative
feelings you've ever felt about eating.   good.  you're ready now.  one . .
.two . . .three . . .snap! <the great mesmorosa becomes evanescent and is no
more>

i'm hungry.  are you up for a bit of a nosh, patty?  (((((((((patty))))))

Thanks, Kate!
Ummm...I'm not sure I'm still sane, but, I'm working on it <bg>.
It's been hard, but, not much different than we all do on a daily
basis, ya know?...One day at a time, one foot in front of the other : )
But, I couldn't do it without the support and caring of friends like
you. Thank you so much! (and, btw, I would've answered sooner, but, I
was too busy eating lol!)
Rose and Norman, thanks for the information on Salagen. It seems
like a pretty benign med, compared to some we take. Not sure why I'm so
reluctant. The bottle's still sitting here unopened. I guess I'll take
it tonight and see what happens. Waking up in the middle of the night
with these raw, dry sores and my throat stuck closed isn't so much fun
anymore LOL.

Maybe it's just that reluctance to be on another blasted medication.  That's
something I think we can all empathize with.  Just cut a deal with yourself
to try it for a week and see........  nothing says you have to stay on it,
but if you love it, than you can keep with it

Thanks so much for your thoughts and prayers. You've always been a
big help to me. I appreciate it more than you'll ever know, especially
since I know you always have so much on your own plate, too. Hope
things are going well with you right now.
Please thank Denise for me, too, okay? : )

Thanks Patty,

I am so glad you are back with us again. I am still fighting the system to
get the help I need. But such is life.

I will also be sharing this with Denise when she gets back from the ocean.

I have it Patty and stopped using it because it didn't make any difference
for me. My lips still get stuck when I talk to people because my mouth is so
dry. I've about given up on finding anything that helps.
