strange foot problems

Ok, am wondering if any of you have ever experienced this same type of
strange foot problem I am having?

When I walk, I get this rather sharp, severe pain in the outside edge of
my left foot.   It almost feels like a bone shifting or something along
those lines.    X-rays show no evidence however of any broken bones,
stress fractures, etc.   Actually, x-rays show a perfectly normal
looking foot.   There is no pain when I press on the foot while sitting
down, no swelling, and this problem will happen for several weeks and
then disappear for a while with no rhyme or reason to it.   The RD said
we could try doing a bone scan to see if that shows anything, but that
is an awfully expensive test for something that just seems to come and
go.     Anyone else have anything similar?   Any suggestions as to what
it might be or what might be helpful?   Am wondering if I should do the
bone scan?   Maybe check with a podiatrist?   Just wait it out to see if
something eventually appears that is easily diagnosable?   Etc.   After
reading the orthotics thread, am wondering if maybe that is something
that may help?
Suggestions???

Hi Donna G.

I think those shoe insert thingyss might help you because RA might of
done something to your ankle and your foot might be rolling a little
pinching a nerve or making two bones or joints move incorrectly.
I am not a foot doctor but I would play one on tv if asked.   That was
to let Charlie know ahead of time.

I haven't had pains on that side of my foot, only on the inside.  My first
thought was to get to a good podiatrist.  They can usually tell if it's a
problem orthotics can help with or not.  My dad had some mysterious foot
pains for a while that flummoxed his RD, but the podiatrist determined it was
some tendonitis and fixed him right up with some pred injections.  I say see
a foot guy.

i'm thinking there must be an ergonomic thing going on with your foot, like
pronation, hyper-pronation or supination that needs correcting.  my
reasoning is mainly because it affects you most when walking.  i  agree
about getting to a podiatrist.   but, if s/he prescribes orthodics, which i
suspect will be the case, i'd take that prescription to an orthopedic
prothetics maker (LCPO) to have them made, because of your RA.   and
because, and this is my personal opinion---i think podiatrists are ok for
making orthodics for people with typical and/or normal problems, pertaining
just to the foot itself.   but when systemic diseases, neurological issues
and/or orthopedic problems in other areas of the body may contribute to
these foot problems, i think somebody with more expertise fitting one with
these kinds of things is a wiser course of action.

Be aware of what you are doing when you walk and when
you stand. Also if you have been shopping or some other
trying task before it acts up.
I was having trouble with my left foot and ankle and
finally figured out that when I was brushing my teeth,
I was actually standing on the outside of the foot.
That was back in my too flexible stage of life. I had
the sole of the foot facing my other foot. Makes me
think ouch just writing it but apparently i was not
aware I was doing it at the time.

LOL  sounds like something I would have done.  In fact, something I still
could, but fortunately don't.  My ankles are still well into that "too
flexible" stage.  Heck, last year I sprained it on the treadmill without even
knowing it!  (still haven't figured that one out - it just started hurting
like the divil as I was walking out of the Y after my shower)

Years in ankle braces and doing ankle exercises to somewhat control the
hypermobility helped make me more aware of what I do.  Also, arch supports
when I'm wearing shoes.  But I know Donna already wears good supportive shoes
so her feet may need the additional structure of orthotics now.

Recently I sprained my right ankle and I have no idea how. I was sort of
blaming the dog--he and I probably trying to occupy the same space and
he winning as he has twice as many feet. LOL

My most recent go-round I know absolutely how it happened. I can kinda
sorta blame it on the dog again as I was taking him to the groomer but
he wasn't to blame for me not watching where I was going and stepping
into the only pothole i the entire parking lot. Last time it was an ace
bandage. This time it's an ace bandage and air cast, for two to three
months.

I gotta stop doing things like that.

BTW I have a habit of, when I'm seated, having my foot with the side
down. Rough on my shoes and probably not so good for my feet.
