sorry i havent been here in a long while, but i have been lurking -

as most of you know, i broke my hip at the end of 2003 - but have had
nothing but problems since, i did not have a hip replacement at the
time, docs said it wasnt warranted....any way - i have run the gamut of
pain killers that dont work, bone stimulator which i am still unsure of,
and now i have had a steroid injection directly into the hip socket -
done under x ray of course(done on friday the 13th no less).....it was
the most painful experience i have ever had and i am still reeling from
it...they kept giving me more novacaine (i think that was the numbing
agent) which is fine, but by the time i was done, i couldnt feel my
entire leg - all the way to my toes. i could not get off the table - the
numbness AND extreme pain where the needle went in...any way - i had
driven my self & obviously i couldnt drive home - they would not let me
leave until i could at least feel my leg & i was able to get someone to
drive me...any way .....before the injection, the pain came & went in
waves - horrible, but i was surviving...but now it is like a constant
ache deep inside the hip....every thing hurts - is this normal??? the
feeling finally came back completely about 12 hours after - which they
said because of the amount of numbing stuff i was given, that was
normal...but is this constant pain normal??? is it just because of the
invasiveness of it all??? will that part go away??? i see the hip guy in
a week & i will discuss it with him, but wanted real life
opinions....oh, and one more question - i am a diabetic - i know that my
prednisone increases my sugar level, can the injection do the same??? it
has been quite high since the injection - higher than my norms....i
should have thought to ask this one when i was there, but i was a tad
distracted...

any opinions????

Kandi, I'm so sorry you are still having such problems with your hip.  I had
an injection like yours under xray; it didn't have the effect on me it did
on you but it didn't really help me either.  I did have a THR later.
However, I had a steroid injection in my other hip for bursitis, and it hurt
me the next day the worst that hip had ever hurt.  I couldn't walk; I just
sat in my recliner and cried most of the day.  By the next day though, it
was feeling lots better and then I had much less pain in the hip for a few
months.  I hope yours will turn out to be the same.

Hi Kandi,     Yes,,, prednisone or a steroid shot of any kind, anywhere
makes my sugar readings go up.   This medicine I take for TB has made my
blood pressure go and my sugar readings go up.   The different medicines we
take for whatever problems can cause other things to happen.    The problem
I have with that is my family doctor wants to make adjustments to almost
everything I take because of my bodys reaction to the TB medicine.   I only
have a couple of more months of that medicine to take and then I will have
check everything I do to try to bring things into the normal range
again,,,,,, if I can.   LOL   Good Lord willen and the creak don't rise.

Harv, crossing my fingers that you get back to "normal" quickly when you
finish the TB medicine.

MEEE too and thanks.   I know what my day is going to be like as I start
knocking down the pills for this and that and I am tired of it all       but
atleast there is an end of the road for being exposed to TB.    Now,,, can I
be exposed again>"???   I am going to have to find out.

I had one of these done to each of my hips (before we realised that they
were shattered with multiple fractures from osteonecrosis). They weren't
bad at all and I required no pain killers. However, they had a nurse to
assist me each time, so I guess some people have a real problem with
these. Have you had an MRI on that hip yet??

I'm going to die rather sooner than I'd like. I tried to protect my
neighbours from crime, and became the victim of it. Complications in
hospital following this resulted in a serious illness. I now need a bone
marrow transplant. Many people around the world are waiting for a marrow
transplant, too. Please volunteer to be a marrow donor:

saw the hip doctor today & told him of my experience with the injection
- and since it did nothing for me, he is thinking something else....he
thinks i may have damaged a disc or something in my back in the fall -
the pain is referring to my hip now...he found several tender spots on
my lower back, that he did not expect.  i dont quite understand the
whole thing, but he seemed to make sense when i was there, but he has
now ordered an MRI - my last mri experience was horrible, i do not meet
the weight limits for the table, but because of the way i am shaped, i
got stuck in the machine....so i made him order an open mri - has anyone
had one of the open ones??? the original was a scary experience & dont
want to go thru that again...of course an mri has to be approved by the
comp insurance - and the pain clinic took a month to get approved...i
dont want to have to wait a month for answers...
i gave up on codeine - it does nothing for me...i have tried lots of
other ones & nothing seems to help...so now i am just suffering...
i am moving this weekend & my doc told me in no uncertain terms i am not
to lift anything - if it is my back i could cause more damage!! how do i
move without lifting anything.....????

i am sure stress is not helping.....but my sugar levels have come down
to almost a normal (for me) read - so that is good...

will update again after my MRI...wish me luck...

Kandi, I don't envy your moving with back and hip problems.  Moving is hard
enough on a healty, pain-free person.  Do take it as easy as possible.  Hope
the MRI will reveal the problem and the doc will know what to do about it.

i can only speak for knee, thumbs, lumbar and thoracic (epidurals) cortisone
injections, but it might also be true for hip injections.  for me, it takes
a few days for things to settle back down and/or for the steroid to kick in.
i don't know if that means settle down "enough" to "notice" that the
steroids have kicked in and helped, or if that means it takes that long for
them to actually help.  splitting hairs, i suppose.  but anyway and either
way, i hope your injection begins to help you tremendously and very soon,
kandi.

Kandi,

I'm so sorry to hear your still having problems.  It has been a long
haul for you.  I think I would find an advocate somehow and get that
hip replaced.  Something is not right.  You shouldn't have to keep on
suffering the way you are.

I'm not sure about the hip injection.  If it doesn't get better in the
next day I would call and let them know.  You will continue to be in my
thoughts.  Keep us posted.
