Hi,
I've had RA for about 6 years now. I'm on plaquenil and arthrotec. Doing
pretty well.
Recent blood tests showed that I have an elevated IGM Cariolipin AB level.
I guess this means that I'm at a high risk for developing blood clots. Deep
vein thrombosis. The doctor says it's related to RA.
I'm supposed to take a baby aspirin daily, make sure I move around if I'm on
a long flight, etc.
Anyone else have this or know anything about it?
Thanks for any info,
Leslie

Moving around on long flights is a good idea for everyone. You will notice
there is a small cluster of us standing at the back of the plane. The baby
aspirin is also a pretty standard recommendation for anyone who doesn't have
some other condition that precludes it. My blood tests don't show any risk
for clots, but I get them anyway. And I don't take the aspirin as there are
too many other risk factors for it for me. My digestive tract is in none to
great a shape.

Hi Leslie
I too have what you do. I am on 2 baby aspirin a day. First put on 1 then
had a cardiac catherization and was told better use 2 pills.
I use the enteric coated and they are easier on the tummy and disolve in
the intestines, so less irriation.
good luck with that, and I have never had a clot happen yet. KNOCK KNOCK

I'm glad to hear you haven't had a clot, Janers. I hope I'm as lucky.
Thanks for the info.

Hi Leslie, Plaquenil is a very mild DMARD. I would have a question for
your RD about you getting on a stronger one if you are showing signs of deep
vein thrombosis which is one of the ways RA kills you and I. RA lung is
another thing that it does for us that can be tested for which I have but it
is a toss up between 3 packs of cigs a day for lots of years could of caused
the damage seen on my x rays and I stopped smoking over 25 years ago or it
could RA which I have had for about the same time.
Believe me when I say that I am not trying to scare you about RA but WE
have it and there are some things we have to face up to. One thing is that
we must control it. When I first was diagnosed with RA, the average person
with it lived 15 years less than the national average person. I think that
number is much less now but one thing that has not changed is that it must
be controlled. Please have a good talk with your RD about this.

I have a factor called Factor V Leiden which my family carries that
makes us predisposed to get clots. Since I've already had a DVT, I take
coumadin regularly. My first clot snuck up on me even though I thought
I was watching for it.(after a broken foot bone) I also have RA.
Checking for a Factor V Leiden gene mutation might be in order because
that combined with your current blood tests might show a need for
stronger than baby asperin. I would ask my doctor about it if I were
you. DianeW

Thanks Diane. I'll mention it to my doctor.
