I went to a medical equipment store.......I wanted a longer reaching
stick (to reach stuff  high or low--because I am only 5' tall and with
Cerebral Palsy

My longer one is missing since I moved....cannot find it!  My knees and
legs are so SORE from crawling around looking for it

They could not/would not sell me it without out a prescription

Any one know the reason why?

I can't imagine why they would refuse. I just go to our local place that sells
all sorts of medical equipment and say "I want one of those." Of course, we are
in Canada, so things like that are more reasonable to obtain.

I can't imagine either...unless you had an inexperienced store person or
they completely misunderstood what you were asking for. It's not a piece
of medical equipment like a CPAP machine or some such!

I'm going to die rather sooner than I'd like. I tried to protect my
neighbours from crime, and became the victim of it. Complications in
hospital following this resulted in a serious illness. I now need a bone
marrow transplant. Many people around the world are waiting for a marrow
transplant, too. Please volunteer to be a marrow donor:

Did you not ask them why? I have no problem purchasing from a couple of
stores and they have even been helpful in suggesting I get a script from
the doctor in order for my insurance to reimburse me for all or part of
the cost.

Our Independent living program director couldn't understand WHY either

He's gonna have one brought over next week.

One of mine--the longer one--got misplaced in my move

I would have paid the money for it......I was told I needed a script for
it--they couldn't sell it without one

have you tried calling other medical supply stores for it, to see if they
say the same thing?  (i always call around before i go looking for something
specific.  saves me a lot of owies.)  it really sounds like you wound up
talking to somebody who was either very new at the job or just plain dumb.

yeah, it sounds really bizarrew to me.  I mean the "ordinary" reaching sticks
are now for sale on every street corner and every catalog.  Can't imagine why
a longer one would suddenly require a script.

Glad you have a source bringing you another.

yep--coming with another this afternoon--the other (longer) could be
jammed in a closet.  The folding one (the shorter one I have now) is 23
1/2 in. long.

The other must have been over 24 in.

Gonna take the yard stick and measure the next one when they bring
it......Bonnie
Bonnie Brien - 17 May 2005 04:47 GMT
Well -- the reacher they brought--was a used one.  I tried picking up a
10 oz. can and before it got to the shelf it dropped to the floor.  It
works, if not picking up heavy cans. Because of the necrosis my left
wrist is week  I may have docs office  check into prescripting one  for
me.

I liked the one I saw at the store that wouldn't sell me one without the
script.

The doc prescribed a new reacher for me--we cannot find the one that was
misplaced.........in all probability....... LOST

That company wouldn't sell me one outright (for cash) because I have
Medicare.

Can they charge more for it under Medicare?

It's a $25 dollar reacher

That explains it.  Now this will make no sense.  But if a place is a
medicare provider as they appear to be, it is against the rules for them to
bill you for something like that.  It gets really weird, but if you have an
RX Medicare will pay them.  But it is illegal for them to charge you for
something that Medicare would have paid for.

We went thru something similar when I needed some home equipment before I
could leave the hospital last time. The provider didn't dot all the i's and
cross all the t's and ended up not getting paid.

I wonder what would of happned if I wuld have said no to` the 'Do I have
Medicare?" question

They said that "scooter" was also on the scrip....my docs nurse said it
was not.  Their sneaky way of finding out if I had a scooter......??

I told that company a long time ago....."to treat me as a wanted
custimer OR"......... besides I HATED the scoot tech (who is no longer
there) at that company anyway at that time I said it,

I still deal with them.....BUT.on a very limited basis........crutches,
CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine.

I am with Joan. I go to the medical place tell them
what I need. Last time there I had the doggie knee [pre
surgery] and thing kept letting go on me. Told the
staff I needed something to keep the knee from doing X
and they said - you need this. I gave them money and
left. USA here.
Now if you are trying to get insurance to pay for it....

Would it be because with a prescription, your insurance will probably pay
for it?

that's the only reason i can think of, too.  it could be they misunderstood
you and thought that you wanted your insurance company to pay for it.

I have gotten long reach pick up tool at Target (folding for $10) and at
Home Depot (about 3 feet for $20). though they don't always have them in.

You can also go here and search for "pick up tool", which they have for
$30, listed as being 34" long
http://www.garrettwade.com/

Also, some local hardware stores carry them.

The ones in hardware/etc. stores are usually cheaper than the ones in
medical supply stores, and are often sturdier.
